Met a friend for dinner tonight. His theory, supported by a friend of his close to the club, is that Scully wants out of Melbourne. Problem being he's not that keen on GWS. Theory is he might take a 2 or 3 year gig up there (cash bonanza) before making his way back to a bigger more professional club such as collingwood, carlton or maybe even richmond.

Alves, Wells left because they were screwed over by MFC. They did not use MFC at all. Quite the opposite. And its a cheap shot by you to use them as an example. Keenan, Byrne or Spalding playing in flags by being in the right place at the right time are not evidence that players have used us as a step ladder. That was your point.

And even if your were right (and oncve more you are not), six players in 41 years is not evidence of players using us as a step ladder.

Meh, only part I agree with is that he is essentially worth exactly a number 1 pick, no reason to dispute this. But there is no way the AFL will change the formula for us specifically, otherwise every club will petition the AFL for 'special conditions'. The only question is, will we get band 1 or band 2 if he leaves? The result is so dependent on where we finish in the year we take the pics so it's hard to judge what he is worth. I disagree thoroughly though that band 1 is 'overs' for Scully, unless we are planning on finishing in the bottom 2 or 3.

If we finish last band 1 is pick 2 and pick 9, which is worth more than he is worth, band 2 would be pick 2, which is about right.

If we finish 8th though band 1 is pick ~9 and ~12, which is probably just not worth it; Sydney offered pick 6 and 14 for pick 3 in 2009 and were turned down, rightly so considering top 3 in 2009 look well above the rest (bar Fyfe) but it's probably roughly equivalent.

If we had band 2 and finished 8th we would get pick ~11 which is clearly not even close.

I think that Tom Scully will remain a Demon for quite some time to come but by the same token, if he does decide to leave, then the rules do not have to be changed to give Melbourne adequate compensation if what Jake Niall says in yesterday's article is correct i.e. "... In addition, the expert panel of AFL talent identification manager Kevin Sheehan and game analysis manager Andrew McKay has the power to override the formula and change the outcome if there is what the AFL called 'an anomalous result'" -DEES COULD GET ABLETTLIKE COMPO FOR SCULLY

On this basis, Melbourne would have a reasonable argument on commercial terms that, given Scully's age, his performances to date, his potential, his remuneration, the club's investment made over two years and the substantial goodwill (in the business and personal sense), an anomalous result would occur if the compensation consisted of anything less than a priority first selection (at any draft including 2011) plus another first round selection. Anything less and, in my view, the compensation would be insufficient. This would be based on the fact that Scully was a priority selection in the first place and there has been substantial input into him over the two years since his selection. A commercial court or tribunal would, I believe, be receptive of such an argument. The AFL should do so as well.

Cameron Schwab is a smart operator. If the rule as expressed by Niall is correct then Schwab knows this and that he would be able to put a strong argument for compensation along the lines I set out above if it ever becomes necessary (and I hope it will not).

I like to think that in a different situation, would K.Sheedy give up pick 1 for Tom Scully. I am pretty sure that he, and any other coach would take that deal in a heartbeat. Therefore, our compansation should be at least the number 1 pick.

...and I still don't understand why his type of player is what GWS really need to spend big money on

correct me if im wrong... but even if we do get a high draft pick for scully, doesnt that mean that it will be compensation in a year where we are committed to taking Jack Viney... so it doesn't really matter where we get the pick, we have to use our highest pick to get him anyway?

this is obviously in a situation where scully goes, which i still blindly am hoping he still doesn't

You really don't want the MFC to succeed do you, you prefer the club to meander along so you always have the crutch of excuse to land on.

Players have left this club to play in premiership sides...that is a fact. Because they knew they would not get one here.

Both Farmer and Thompson wanted to go home for family reasons. Which flags did they play in?? Alves and Wells were getting to the end of their career and we were never going to win a flag and the club agreed to sell them so they achieve the ultimate success

The history of the club over the last 4-5 decades is very relevant C & B and it is far from Garbage, but you are free to believe what you want.

Sure there were foolish trades i am not disputing that, but at the end of the day Top Line players have left this club and walked into premiership situations.

This season has been an unexpected train wreck and the elephant under the mcg grass all along has been scully's non-commitment. our formline actually dropped off towards the end of last season, from the Hawthorn game on. we are a much better team than what we have shown and the scullduggery has undermined what all hoped would be a breakout year a la '87 and '98. we need to clear the decks and put a reasonable contract to scully. if he won't deal then play him in a less key role and bring other players up who have a long term commitment. otherwise we are just letting scully's management wipe us at the end of the year which would be yet another humiliating experience for the club. Be proactive.

I don't know if it's true I'm just relaying what 2 seperate people have told me in the last 24 hours. It could just be the latest rumour in the Scully saga. Make of it what you will. It certainly ain't gospel because we still have what Tom said. Sadly for me I've come to believe he's gone.

As I said make of it what you will. It's a reliable source as was this morning's. It strikes me as interesting that 2 different people both with contacts at melbourne told me the same story. Is it true? I think so but in the end only a handful of people know what is really going on.

He is a contracted MFC player in 2011 and that's all there is to it - everything else will continute to be rumours and speculation because nothing can be made officially public until October. And besides, I would want him to play out the year despite whether or not he stays at the club.

I don't know about that. Would it hurt Cam Schwab to come out and address the issue honestly and matter-of-factly? Something to effect that the club recognizes the unique nature of the situation and although we will be doing al we can to keep Tom and any other young gun, the issue of compensation is a real one and we will be exploring all options in that regard.

It's dominating the media anyway. Why not try and slant it in our favour and start the lobbying process now? At the very least it will show that the Club is aware of supporter concerns on this matter.
