On 3AW, they were thinking that Murphy arguably Carlton's 2nd best player would be offered approx $500k per year by Carlton to re sign. There was discussion that any GWS offer would be approx. 2x that offer and for 5 years. While its open to conjecture, thats $1 million per annum over 5 years that is locked up by GWS that cant be spent on Scully. GWS may be chasing two big $$$ midfielders with Scully being one of them. If they have earmarked a ruck,fwd or back for the other big pay cheque then Murphy might be their choice and Scully might be chance for MFC. While they have a larger salary cap than Victorian clubs, GWS have finite resources to spend.

Very keen to hear other Club's players being taken by GWS and not MFC players being taken.

It is interesting that Carlton were saying in early Feb that Murphy was just about to sign with them and as we come into May he still has not and was not be prepared to make that commitment to doing so on Fox when grilled by Mark Robinson and others. 3AW said Murphy's body language was most uncomfortable

Having said that I think GWS will want more immediate results than GC, and that Sheedy will be out to secure bigger bodied more mature players.

Given the market they'll be operating in, I don't think they can afford to struggle for 3 or 4 seasons.

Correct, that's why a murphy offer would be most helpful to the MFC.

They could... but not easily.

They do have an extra $1m in the cap and lots of young 18 yr olds, but they also have an extra 12 players on their initial list to pay. They also have to pay their senior players a lot more than market value to lure them to play in a Western Sydney (i.e. a cr*phole).

Much like Gold Coast, they can probably afford 1x $1.5m p.a., 4-5x $600,000, 2-3X $400,000, with the rest rookies.

If they scored themselves Marc Murphy, which would cost at least $1m p.a, and then spent $800k p.a. on Scully, that would be their 2 marque players, and it would jeapardize their ability to lure quality key position talent.

You could also look at it in another perspective. T. Scully could see Murphy going to GWS as a good thing, and be more inclined to go. Some have stated on other threads that he may be waiting to see who else they sign. Murphy might be one of those players in which to lure others to go.

Absolutely correct, but it does lower the coin on offer...Carlton will not let him go easily.

Strongly disagree. Murphy is an out and out gun and most definitely a midfield lynchpin.

I agree with this view. There's plenty of cash for both of them if they want to go and Murphy's departure could well become the first domino in several big names feeing more confident to make the move.

No chance of him leaving Carlton. A lot of people are forgetting players are being told to leave contract talks until the new tv rights deals are completed. But anyway back on to Murph, he'll be staying at Carlton and I'll put my house on it.

Righto so they will go with Murphy 24yo, 80kgs, 104 games. He is 4 years older, 3kgs heavier with 83 more games of experience and a great fitness record. He is a plug in and play class footballer

Scully may well go onto to be a better footballer over the course of his career but Murphy is and will be a class AFL player with 200 to 300 games career beckoning. And if Sheedy cant wait the 3 to 4 years for success then.....

If they get some 23Yr to 25Yr olds, from the current powersides, that would be good for the whole competition.

T. Scully reminds me of GSP - Georges St Pierre from UFC - they look like brothers and both have impeccable training professionalism.

Murphy definitely suits GWS needs better than Scully. Would be a good pick up.

For he sakeof cohesion, I thik there would be issues with bringing in a less than 30 game player on more than 500k/year (Scully) when you also have four or five top draft picks in the midfield around him earning a quarter of that according to regulation AFL contracts.

Murphy on the other hand can reasonably be pointed to as providing the hard body on the ball and real impact on the field beyond what a new kid could offer, and the star attraction value to justify the dollars.

For the record, I'd be quite happy if Scully turned out to be 'only' as good as Murphy. A bit like saying 'only' as good as Bartel for Trengove.
