Sub against West Coast?

Featured Replies

Bennell for mine. Has limited impact on games overall so far, but his electrifying pace would be an asset in the last 40 minutes, especially if its warm over there and fatigue/fitness is a factor.

Could be watts out for Maric or Petterd, or Strauss.

or Newton

Watts back to Casey.

Petterd in.

Bennell sub to blast them in the last quarter.

Anyone know a long range weather forecaster.

100% agreement

I simply cannot understand why Watts was sub last week - it was a massive chance for him to make an impact and gain confidence, the only explanation I can think of is that he was a bit sore. When he came on he was very good. I think it's probably Bennell's turn and not because he isn't performing - Mark William's review was very happy with him.

Warnock in...Grimes sub

We face Lynch, Kennedy, Embley - big buggers!!

Rivers to Lynch

Chippa to Kennedy

Garland to Darling

Morton to Embley

I'd also like to see bail go to shuey, who seems like their most dangerous mid fielder

I've never heard of 'Bleeze' 'Batrum' 'Pettard' or 'Bennel'? Who are these guys?

you gotta agree though that 4 out of 4 was outstanding

Watts was actually quite good when be finally came on against the Suns.

Watts' best game to date was against Freo on the wide expanses of Subi - maybe a good idea to leave him in?

Petterd was good, not great, in the VFL.

I'd want more from him (anyone) before I rush them back into the side at the expense of someone playing good footy & still developing.

And, as "DEVELOPMENT!" is my catchcry, I'd hypocritically like to see Blease come into the sideand be the sub, with Bennell playing the whole game.

Both players could use their pace on the big ground to great effect.

Blease had himself an, albeit single, great game in the VFL, and as a runner I'm conscious that he, like Bail, may have a much greater impact at the next level whilst not being able to stand out as much when playing for Casey.

I was very impressed.

I was gagging to get back from my enforced holiday for referring to someone as a "hero", just so I could point it out.

Beaten to the punch...

As Malthouse said on the radio recently, the best way to test a player's character and to challenge them mentally, is to not play them.

I think a clear message was sent to Watts: we don't care how light the opposition are, how much the media is calling for you to be played for the full match - if you want to play, you're going to have to earn it.

I think this notion that Watts needs to build his confidence isn't quite accurate, and it would seem Grimes has confirmed that.

He has confidence in himself, that is not a problem.

He just doesn't have confidence in his body yet to be crashing through packs, nor should he, as his body is not quite ready to withstand it.

It will come with time & growth.

Agreed that Bennell was good.

It may be his turn, but I think he may be more useful for the entire game.

Morton doesn't play on anyone...

Morton doesn't play on anyone...

i'd like to see him play on embley this week becasue embley has had a great year so far. Morton has been given run with roles on others in the past, Goodes etc.

Morton doesn't play on anyone...

Is this like a Chuck Norris joke?

Morton doesn't play on anyone...

...he plays on everyone.

...he plays football!

...they play on him.

Or the more obscure:

...he plays guitar.

...he plays a Sith Lord in Star Wars Episode I: Phantom of the Menace.

...he plays with himself.

That's all I got.

What you have said about Watts playing at Subi makes sense.

I am not being a smart ar-- but would like to know under what situation would you not play him?

It seems you would have him in for the next ten weeks no matter what happens.

No, I think he is showing consistent effort and in a match where he only played a quarter, he was good.

That doesn't warrant being dropped.

He has to be dropped for a player who is clearly more deserving of the spot than Watts.

No one at this stage stands out as just that.

I'd drop him if he had poor body language or attitude, he had a poor work rate, or it he was clearly lost out there and had no effect on the game.

He is not having a significant impact on the game, but that doesn't concern me at this stage.

The only people who expect that are deluded.

It is true that I am more forgiving of a developing player like Watts or even Strauss than an established physically-mature player like Dunn or Petterd.

In all honesty, wins and losses mean nothing to me this year.

I'm looking for improvement and development, and in more of a personal nature in those 2 things, as opposed to as a team.

A lot of our supporters are well ahead of themselves.

I could not agree more with this post. Spot on. People should not get too far ahead of themselves or we risk compromising what we're trying to build. We don't want to be the current Carlton or Sydney teams who are constantly thereabouts but never seriously challenge. We want to be Collingwood or Geelong.

I watched the last qtr last night and he was pretty good. If he had 4 quarters like that it would have been a decent outing. The commentary team were giving him a bake and then failed to even comment on what he did right. At one point he did a nice little air-tap to Davey who gave it Ozzie for a goal, the replay was shown twice and his name was never mentioned. Leigh Matthews was talking over the top of it about how good a player Shaun Hart was in his day.

He did look a bit of a goose at the very end though when he dropped the ball while attempting to bounce it. If he hadn't done that he probably would have had a shot from about 50 with like 1 second left on the clock. A goal there would have been nice, I think he is having some real confidence issues, afraid of making mistakes and being a bit overwhelmed.

no way should he be dropped

It's good to see that there is some love for Cale.

It's just something I can't give....

Morton on the wing

There's no one on him

He's tagging himself!!

Bennell for mine. Has limited impact on games overall so far, but his electrifying pace would be an asset in the last 40 minutes, especially if its warm over there and fatigue/fitness is a factor.

I agree Dave thats he's been 'off'. But he played, 'well' against Sydney, then went off''', but played well this match gone.

So while I want him dropped, after he "shirks it",,,, he has improved since. I think he's contribution has improved and warrents his spot this week.

I agree, and it's a pretty prevalent view in footy media too.

I heard West pressed on the issue and all he said was that they thought hard about it.

im thinking Petterd in for Watts. I think strauss could play a similar role to Bartram but he has silkier skills and has performed really well in the VFL so that could be looked at. I agree with what most posters are saying on here about Bennell being the sub. Has shown some real promise this year so far without setting the world on fire. On a big ground in possibly hot conditions he would be the perfect man to come on ideally half way through the 3rd quarter and inject some pace and run into our side.

On theory that i have heard is that by taking the "easy" game off Watts it could be seen as a message that he is goign to have to lift his game and work HARDER for his spot and if he wants to fill his potential. Yeah he can play well against the suns for a week or he can hit the track hard and do it week in week out

He may not even be the sub next week, type thing

I kind of agree with Bennell for the the sub, but I think as someone mentioned earlier, that his endurance is very good and we would probably want him on for the whole match. Remember how good Petterd was as the sub against the Swans - his form has reportedly been good in the VFL, so he'd be my pick - Petterd in for Dunn, as sub.

Yeah, there telling him they want him 'In' the side but he's slipping. He has to lift his workrate to save his spotin the team. Is it too late?

Morton doesn't play on anyone...

Correct, nobody.

Morton is one of those players that will never be anybody, if you pay attention to Morton, you'll understand that he is the biggest cheat. Taking a punt and drifting forward off the pack, and your man, for the next cheeky little uncontested get and uncontested goal is fine.....against the Gold Coast. No hard ball, nothing silky, just lazy goalkicking practice.

Guarantee that on the wide open spaces of Subiaco, against a better quality side, you'll all be shouting at the TV - "whos on him", and you won't know it there and then that Morton is, but Morton is at our end of the ground on the forward flank.

I agree we need those players, but they need to take care of their man first and foremost. For every cheating Morton, there is an increase in opposition numbers around the ball and thus an increase on the chances of an opposition clearance and Morton becomes useless. Morton = 0. Simple mathematics.
