Bad news Giants

Giants lose narrowly to ACT

It's not only bad news but the ABC's short article about the Giants' defeat at the hands of a combined A.C.T side is a little contradictory.

It starts off by telling us that the team "lost their first trial yesterday and then informs us that the result "puts the Giants on a 1-1 record, having notched their first victory in a 60-minute practise match against an under 21 Sydney Swans outfit."

I suppose that for 8 cents they could have expressed it a bit better but really, if these kids are struggling to beat a scratch team from Canberra, why are they being thrown to the wolves in a NAB Cup fixture next week?

I travel to Sydney frequently, and as many will know AFL barely rates, and is swamped by Sunday papares articles on NRL and anything else.

That's after the recent heroics of the Swans.

GWS is a car crash unfolding.

Has AFL management seriously been into the western suburbs of Sydney?

It's a world away from the audience of theatr-goers of the SCG.

I was at this game yesterday for the first three quarters and GWS looked very ordinary. They will be murdered in the NAB cup. They are and they played like a bunch of 18 year olds.

It was interesting though, getting to stand around the huddle listening Sheedy and Choco give their addresses at the end of the quarters. Something us Canberrans don't get the opportunity to witness very often.

The stand out for GWS was #24 - Stephen Clifton. Needless to say that he is also the oldest player on thier list. Folau didn't play.

Yep, GWS are there so Gold Coast can get a win, likely a high scoring thrashing, and be a better shot at making it through to the next round.

The AFL is handling GWS so badly it simply boggles the mind. Minimal grass-roots investment, minimal school-based investment. All bells and whistles, no product.

The Western Sydney Football Club could have been a real success, even a point of shared feeling amongst the astonishing polyglot community that is Western Sydeny. But they simply haven't invested in any substantial community connections either.

"If you broadcast it, they will come" seems to be Demetriou's plan. Where really they need to be up to their elbows in community events, dragging in supporters a dozen at a time, visit after visit, function after function, sausage after sausage, and yes even felafel after felafel.

That's something most Melbournians don't get to witness very often...

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
