Jack Anthony

Try putting a forward line together with what we already have, we have a pretty exciting and dangerous forward line.

Adding Anthony would only hold back what we've already got, and i cant really see him filling the role we want him to anyway.

I'd prefer Darling in our forward line over Anthony any day of the week. Darling would bring what Anthony lacks - forward pressure.

As rightly pointed out in another thread, we will be committed to taking Viney in the 2012 draft with our first pick. Quality talls are bloody tough to find, even more so in the later rounds of the draft. We will only have 2010 and 2011 to find a quality tall, because if we wait until 2013 to draft one, it will be too late. It takes a good 3-4 years for a KPF to really hit their straps in AFL. By 2017, we could have missed the boat with the likes of Davey, Green, Russian, etc either retired or coming into the twilight of their careers.

Good midfielders and HBF are a dime a dozen, Quality KPP's are not. As the saying goes - a quality tall over a quality small. We need to make acquiring a KPF our main target over the next 2 years and i doubt we are going to be able to poach a quality forward already in the system.

Look at our rookies at the moment, we've only got Michael Newton (after Spencer and Jordie are upgraded) I believe.

That means that we've got 5 picks in the rookie draft this year.

With Gold Coast coming in and GWS having the first eight picks, it means that our first pick is pick 14 and then every 17th pick after that. It's likely that we'll be picking up our final rookie selection somewhere in the 70-90 range.

Also remember that we can upgrade a rookie from round one as a result of only having one veteran on the list.

Therefore, we should consider that we could pick up Anthony with a late rookie pick, with not much talent remaining by then, and only half his salary could count towards the salary cap. Also remember, that the rookies are on a two year deal I believe, that means that we will only be able to pick one rookie next year with only Newton being out of contract (unless we promote another rookie), and will have to either promote, extend for one year or delist five rookies in 2012.

He may not be the answer to our forward line problems, but it wouldn't hurt to give him, or someone similar a try.

According to the Hun article from September 19, 2009 there's more to it than the Wedding Crasher incident.

Jack of hearts - Magpie fans love Jack Anthony

The line that worries me most is

"Honest to the point of abrasive, and with a raft of personality quirks, he was thought by rival recruiters to be uncoachable. Refusing to answer to his birth name John - Jack had a better ring to it - he struggled to find his niche at the club."

Everyone can change, but would prefer to take a punt on a 18 year old who fits the job description, than someone who isn't quite the right fit AND may destabilise the team.

Nice work finding that article - it was the one I was thinking of but couldn't find.

I agree totally- we should in my opinion draft at least 4 talls from our 10 picks.

Please do not forget to let me know whilst absent.

The killer for me is when he said:

"When I came to the footy club, I had never had any boy friends, as in mates. So to be thrust into a football club with 45 blokes, and to not really understand what it was like, I'm paying the price at times."

What he said is weird, but even the way he said it.

The guy is severely lacking in normal social skills.

And that comment is supposedly after he has matured & grown out of saying silly things!

Wow.

Seriously different.

it's interesting to note the pies enjoy playing along the wings when bringing the ball down the ground...melb likes to play on and be direct...

i think our style would suit jack anthony playing the big bodied forward. if cameron mooney can last for so long at the cats jack anthony will work at the demons playing the exact same role...

Anthony will be gone by the time we're making our last rookie pick. He is nominating for the PSD. Someone will take him.

The article also quotes Nick Maxwell as saying:

"He's a great bloke, and we all love him and are thrilled that he could kick that (match-winning goal) on Saturday night because he deserved it," captain Nick Maxwell said."

"He's such an honest person that (early in his career) people found that confronting. It's something that I find really good. You need honesty in a football club if you want to improve and you want the team to improve."

"He's one of the biggest competitors I have ever seen play the game. He just hates losing no matter what it is - whether the boys are standing around in the circle kicking a soccer ball and trying to keep it off the ground - and that's what is going to make him an outstanding AFL footballer for a long time to come."

So he's got a quirky personality and has admitted to saying a few dumb things when he was 19 or 20. So what? He sounds to me like a highly competitive bloke who has been willing to cop criticism and change himself for the better.

He hasn't been in trouble with the law or gotten himself into fistfights and nightclubs etc ... Why the character assassination?

The Casey coach will be happy to have a good forward with Miller leaving.

Interesting that people are making the comparison between Anthony and Miller.

I watched the Casey v Collingwood game at Victoria Park this year. Miller smashed Anthony into an infinite number of infinitely small particles.

I'd be lying if I said that this didn't worry me more than a little.

Miller would have Anthony for body strength.

Anthony would have Miller for Goal-kicking and speed off the mark.

Miller pretty much smashed him at everything. Led at the ball, doubled back, found it in space, and out marked him.

Anthony didn't do himself many favours with that performance.

You do realise you are talking about VFL football? Like it means something. Like it's even worth mentioning.

In 3 seasons of AFL football, Anthony has posted tallies of 25 and 50 goals. Miller's best effort in 8 seasons is 26 goals. In those 8 seasons at AFL level, that was the only time Brad managed to kick over 20 for the year - something Anthony has already done twice in 3 years. Comparisons between Miller and Anthony end here.

As for the "one strange cat" comments, who really cares? People said similar things and a whole lot worse about Plugger. It's not like Jack jumps on cabs like Daniel Kerr, gets in fights with team-mates like Ben Cousins or takes raunchy pictures with dogs like Joel Monaghan. He's squeaky clean as far as I can tell but he has been labelled weird, so what. How can something as trivial as that get beaten so far out of proportion?

Haven't we all learnt from previous drafts. If Anthony is determined to go to Freo, it doesn't matter what position we hold in the PSD, he will go to Freo.

Melb arnt in the business of picking up players against their will.

Luke Ball?

The article doesn't mention whether he is keen to go or not, however, I think I know were he would prefer to go at this stage. I hope Iam wrong. I think he would be a decent pick up.

Spot on rusty it is Luke ball all over again.

If Anthony wants to go to a specific club it will happen.

My gut tells me that is Carlton / Fremantle

If that was the case, he would have declared the club by now. Ball made it very clear in trade week he wanted to go to Collingwood and walked out when the deal wasn't done, whereas Anthony has only indicated he wants to be at a club who will offer more opportunities than the Magpies. He asked to be traded anywhere from what I've read and still hasn't nominated a preferred destination. Still up in the air as far as I can tell.

I realise I was talking about the VFL. I think that I specifically mentioned it. At least it felt like I did. Wait ..... yeah, I did.

I said that they were directly pitted against each other in that game and Miller smashed him. I said that I found it concerning. I didn't say he was better or worse than Miller. The only comparison made was by you.

On the 18/9 this year i started this topic and was shot down by the majority. Now the majority say we need him because DB says we are looking at him. Its about time som of you looked a bit more subjectivly.

It's this time of year that stupidity reigns.

Jack Anthony has no place at our club.

My last post on this topic. I have the greatest respect for Mick Malthouse even though he coaches the scum of the land. If he doesn't rate this guy then I have no problem to defer to to his wisdom. This guy is sucker bait.

Miller would have Anthony for body strength.

Anthony would have Miller for Goal-kicking and speed off the mark.

Anthony would also have Miller for age.

Much more room for improvement. Miller has probably already peaked.

Quite true. But if we don't use pick 53 in the main draft, we will have a PSD pick available. In that scenario we may get him, if that is the wish of the FD.

But I don't want him.

Fremantle, done and done......... enough of the topic now...

Fremantle, done and done......... enough of the topic now...

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
