Now that the greatest race never run has been run and won, what is the best AFL team of all time. I know people will say the game has changed so much any comparison is stupid, but let's gave a crack. Let me start it off:

Brisbane 2004

Melbourne 1957

Hawthorn 1988

Melbourne 1939

Essendon 2000.

Now that should get a raging debate started!!!!

Pointless exercise. We are the greatest. :)

I agree , the commentaters wax lyrical about Brisbane and Geelong , Sheedy reakons it was them in 2000 .

Somehow our 50's side is always forgotten .

I wasn't there but for the better part of a decade we must've been fricken awesome .

If you wanted to get a raging debate started maybe you should of added Collingwood 2010... I feel sick even typing that. Actually that would be more of a mass debate

Can't see Geelong being included when you consider some of the teams that have been missed:

Carlton 1906-08

Collingwood 1927-30

My vote would have to be Melbourne 1957 or Collingwood 1930.

The Dees won 5 in six years and should've won 6 of 6, making them undoubtably the best of all time followed by the Pies 4 on the trot.

Brisbane was a great team, but never finished top of the ladder after the home and away season so I can't make them as a great team. However, over the ground, I think they were a better team than Geelong in '07 on the basis that they had a better forward line whilst matching them in the midfield and defence.

Hawthorn '88 was a great team and are in with a shout as the greatest of all time, I'd place them 3rd.

I don't rate Essendon in '00, I think the fact that they weren't up to it in '01 and '99 means that they can't be considered the greatest of all time, and it could've been more of a weaker league in '00 with the Kangas dropping off and the Lions not yet a force.

One thing that bodes well for future premiership success is that of the Dees flags, only five of them have been a single flag, the others have been in two groups of 3 and a double.

Let's hope we can do it in 2012-14 or something similar.

The 1957 Melbourne team was great but I believe the 1956 team was even better. I will compare the two. 1957 Won 14, lost 6, tied 1. 1956 Won 18 Lost 2. !957 GF score Melbourne 17.14.116 def Essendon 7.13.55. 1956 GF score Melbourne 17.19.121 def C'wood 6.12.48.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
