Ok...lets spell it out and make it abundantly clear about the why and the what of this trade. Seems many just arent seeing it for its true value.

The Why:

Melbourne like all clubs will draft kid after kid after kid. They will be assessed prior to their naming for what the club thinks they have as ability and possible future with the club..and heres the kicker....at that moment. This encompasses who's already at the club and who else is on teh horizon and where the FD sees the various players in terms of their curve.

And then they roll the dice. Kids are picked. From here its a bit here and there. Some kids will jump out of the box , others will take their time. Some will , who having previously been assessed as having X level of ability currently and Y growth turn into the Z category....or not quite what we thought. There is the otherside whereby areas of the paddock which were under-represented suddenly become traffic hazards. A glut. So what do you do ?

The What:

Having reassessed said player in terms of the new current level of the team etc some folk simply wont get much air time going forward. They might not even look like being automatic call ups should the A team get injured. They are well on their way to becoming a list clogger. In the past we have collected them. Now we dont.

So WHAT we do is make space on the list for future listings etc. Space can come at a premium. You can t really go down the shop and buy it. You create it. THAT is the WHAT of this trade. Space. Yes we got a trade ( 52) and may well use it and in all reality its a bit of like for like given how we got Kyle in the first place but in reality we now have a little more scope.

Those that think we got dudded because we only got a 3rd rounder for him... well what do you really think is fair currency for a no best 22 with a decent game but nothing special ? Someone who looked destined to play good footy for the Scorps !!

The reward is space and or such Kyle had to go . He probably wont be the last either. Well done MFC Good luck Kyle...again ..its win/win.

Because he's the only player no longer contracted. Bell and Miller are still in contract until the 31st of October.

Was disappointed to see how little Hawthorn gave for him but it's better than nothing I guess. Will be interesting to see exactly how deep this draft is and what is taken with pick 52.

I like Cheney and wish him the best but I don't see him getting much more of a go at the Hawks. He will get games here and there but I'm confident he'll never play more than 18 games in a single season at the club.

Got it in one. I love that the club has now changed gear to really be in phase 2 of it's recruitment, and push for a flag. There comes a time when you've drafted nothing but quality, and suddenly when you lose players, you're losing guys you would prefer to keep in some way, shape or form. In years gone by Wheatley, Whelan, Robbo... a lot of these guys had maybe one year left but were gone soon anyway, so no-one really cared... And those delistings certainly were never really going to come back to bite us.

Now we have only really 3 names that we can seriously talk about delisting, in Maric, PJ, McNamara. Past that there's a few in the gun for next year in Newton, Martin... To go with players like Bell, McDonald and Miller. It says so much about the quality of our list that there was talk of 2 of our delisting/retirements finding new clubs.

Demonland should be rejoicing. Well maybe not rejoicing, but certainly should be pleased.

We're not at that point for me.

Is Maric coming out of contract? ;o

PS. Just in case you didn't know, Newton comes out of contract this year.

It's a moot point - he was delisted last year and picked up as a rookie.

I'm well aware of that.

However, when Dappa Dan said Newton was in the gun for next year it seemed odd since he hasn't even made it past this year.

Thus, I let Dappa Dan know that he's out of contract this year, in case DD wasn't aware.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
