Ben McKinley

After having a meeting with John worsfold ben McKinley has informed the club he wants to be traded to a Victorian club. Do you think melb will look at him? Kicked 42 goals last year

"west coast won't have a team next year at this rate"

i would rather go after David Hale first. Hale can do everything Mckinley can, plus go into the ruck

David Hale is completely and utterly rubbish as soon as the ball hits the ground in the forward line, you're virtually playing a man down. I have a die hard north supporter as a mate n he is over the moon Hale asked for a trade!

We don't want him

he is a 201cm ruck man who can rest forward and be damaging. How effective is Sandilands or Jamar when the ball is below their knees?

Happy to give McKinley a go. For the right price of course, but he's certainly worth considering.

I feel at the moment we are a club who is able to get the most out of a player like this. He's had a bad year no doubt but his 2009 was solid.

Plus my wife (WC supporter) loves him and this would be a further step towards my life's ultimate goal in converting her.

At 184cm and 822 kgs, he is about the same height and weight but not necessarily as good as Green, Petterd, Sylvia.

I think we have enough of that type in a list of 40 players.

Lets focus on what we actually need.

I would seriousley consider him. Coming back to your home state should spark him into action.

BUT, he is only 185cm & 85kg. Looks can be decieving or his specs need updating. He is not really what we are looking for if they are true.

Jesse White is more suited to what we are looking for.

There is more to a player than his height and weight. Although at 822kgs he'd need to lose a few kgs.

A good preseason should fix it!.

I think we have a number of mid size marking forwards that play the role that McKinley plays. He will be after good $$$$ and I cant see us pushing hard to cover a role in the side that I that we have covered particularly by Green and Petterd.

Hale is a complete and utter spud. He is shocking. Last thing we need is a guy who can't get a game for Norf.

McKinley is interesting. He's capable. Nice contested mark, decent kick when he's on. Obviously worrying that he couldn't get a game for a shite side.

I reckon he'd blossom back in Melbourne.

However don't you think we have the crumbers to take advantage if needed?

and your having a go at people wanting to get Hale, who couldn't get a game in another shite team, but you think Mckinley is interesting but could not get a regular game for the wooden spooners

Good point!

Its all about team balance. We want a gorilla up forward - to change with Jamar .... and Hale is just the go. The fact that things aren't working out for him at North - who have 3 top quality rucks in McIntosh, Goldstein ( who is only 22) and Petrie doesn't mean he isn't up to standard.

.

I Would rather McKinley however I have a suspicion that Essendon will get him. 86 goals in 46 games isnt a bad effort

I dont't think the game these days allows you to have someone on the ground, anywhere, who cannot put pressure on without the ball.

Even with crumbers, you need to be able to compete, create space for the crumbers. Hale just doesn't do this and hence I don't think it is worth us chasing and giving up assets to aquire him.

I'm not even convinced he's better than Paul Johnson. PJ is no world beater but when given a consistent run of games he shows that he can hold his own.

i would give up Bate for McKinley

why? what benefit to the MFC is there if that were to happen?

Agreed. McKinley has nothing special to offer which would see him getting games ahead those we already have. He certainly doesn't fit the bill of a strong, marking KPF who could successfully pinch hit in the ruck.

Backwards step.

Giving up a bloke who has finished in the top 4 in the Bluey twice in the last 4 years for a poor man's Robbo.

I wonder if you would have said the same thing 12 months ago.

I'm pretty confident you won't say the same thing 12 months from now...

McKinley has shown very promising glimses, particularly through '08-'09, plus he's only 21-22.

I think he kicked 40-odd goals in '08. That's very good for a small forward.

Better prospect than Hale, no doubt.

Unfortunately I think he probably will.

(no reflection on Bate...)

McKinley would be a perfect fit for Essendon I think.

(please, please, please...)

If we're going to chase someone let's make sure they'd be in our best 22 - No from me.

Not good enough.

Next.

100% Agreed.

With Petterd, Jurrah, Watts, Bate, Dunn already in the team as lead up players, why on earth would we want this bloke???

End of discussion.

its funny...people say they dont want him, but i agree with you

when i mentioned mckinley on here 2 weeks ago, i got laughed at. His starts 08-09 were good, but Kennedy's trade meant he was squeezed out competing with him, Le Cras, Lynch. They all can't be in same forward line.

But i said it and threw it up because i know that the club are interested. bate has re-signed, so it won't be for trading him

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
