David Mundy

This bloke's a gun.

I say we go after him all guns blazing. Would be a sensational addition.

Freo are going to want a player and probably a draft pick for him. I've got no problem with that.

Money isn't an issue for us right now.

I don't want to give up our first round pick. How old is he again..?

I'd give up, say, pick 32 and Jones.

Or pick 32 and Warnock (they need a replacement for Tarrant).

I expect they'd ask for pick 12 and Trengove.

Mundy just turned 25.

Why not give up a first round pick for a player who is a top quality midfielder?? Would you not be hoping to secure exactly that with a first round pick?? Has no significant injury history I'm aware of. Bird in the hand...

Yeah, I know, bird in the hand.

I'd be hoping to get a 10 year player with a 1st round pick.

And this draft is incredibly strong and deep. It'd be like trading out of the 2001 draft (or selecting Molan).

25 is a good enough age, but I think he will really cost us a lot to get him.

And there is talk he was on $550K at Freo the last 2 seasons, so presumably he'd want more or at least the same.

MORTON for MUNDY?

When does trade week begin?

Contrary to "funny" attempts at humour actually last 7 days this year ... Monday October 4 - Monday October 11 - AFL Exchange Period

"4" days was last year.

Understand the point about wanting a 10 year player with a 1st rounder, but in real terms, how many of those years are usually lost to developing the player into a consistent, top flight contributor?? Say 3?? Leaving 7 years of top level play.

Well Mundy would have 5 seasons of quality football in him. So we're effectively doing away with the risk of whether a drafted player will "make it" in exchange for 2-3 years of output. Seems like a sound deal to me.

Obviously this isn't an exact mathematical equation, and naturally it differs from player to player, so try not to nitpick the semantics.

Yeah, fair call.

If I had to make the decision I'd flip a coin.

I really like Mundy as a player, and he's a really decent bloke too.

He has great character.

His value is proven.

I just worry that we have a few of his type and I'd love to get the big bustling forward I think we need, with pick 12 (sounds like Bailey does too).

On the other hand, that's still a risk and chances are Tommy Lynch won't be left by pick 12 and Darling will be too short / messed up psychologically.

Big fat flip of the coin.

You forgot Freo's first rounder

Hope would be the operative word, the odds aren't that good and rising at #12

25YO gun would be a good deal for #12 draft pick, but the spondulas would be high

On the other hand, that's still a risk and chances are Tommy Lynch won't be left by pick 12 and Darling will be too short / messed up psychologically.

Darling is actually 2cm taller than Fev and only 1cm shorter than Pav so not sure height will be an issue with him... That said, he was apparently a loose cannon with a poor attitude and may now be facing some psychological issues as you suggested.

On Mundy, I'm with your original call. I think he is a quality player but has only really produced the one outstanding season and, at 25, we run the risk of throwing a little bit too much at him in an over-inflated marketplace. If it was Swan or Ablett, sure, but I think we have more pressing needs and his price is likely to end up over the odds. I'd be happier to spec the first pick on a tall forward prospect and back in our emerging midfield, especially seeing as we are still one or two years away (at least) from being a genuine threat.

This thread has convinced me that if the right person became available- big forward with a mature body and good disposal- We will throw pick 12 at him at the least. We need some more mature bodies in there, especially if we do make finals next year which noone would be surprised of.

How many 17/18 year do we need bloody! What we have done with recruiting up until now has been damn near perfect, perhaps a mature gun is that extra cog in the MFC structure needed to evolve from being inconsistently competitive to consistently competitive. Up until to today, I was never thinking about trading away our first pick, now I say, we should lay it out there on the table!

Let's be honest here, and I agree with Nostradeemus as well - how many kids do we need?? We have had a truck load of top picks over the last 3-4 years and the time is right to off load a first rounder... if the price is right.

David Mundy would be a FANTASTIC fit at our club - genuine leader, fantastic footballer and a great bloke who doesn't grab headlines for the wrong reasons. As a club we are finally in a position to lure someone like him to play for us - our facilities are top notch, we have proven that we are going forward and he will be in his prime as a footballer when we make our tilt. What's not to like? As far as I can see we are in a better spot than Essendon and Carlton and we aren't hamstrung by our facilities and money situation any more.

If he wants to come here then I'd be more than happy to part with our first rounder to get him.

Mundy will today announce (or at least tell Freo) that he is returning to Victoria.

I can't quite fathom why some supporters wouldn't give up pick 12 for Mundy. He's worth pick 12 every day of the week. :)

Pick 12 alone wouldn't get the deal done, but I'd be going all out for him. He's only played midfield in the last 2 years, which is why his numbers are down.

If he is returning to Victoria hopefully he'd consider Melb as a viable option. The MFC has a tonne of upside and I'm sure that his former coach and CEO will be having plenty of words in his ear.

I guess I just have high hopes we'll get a quality KPF with pick 12, which I see as necessary.

Mundy, whilst a gun, is not necessary as we already have the makings of a decent midfield.

If we do get him, I will be over the moon.

But i think our priorities lie elsewhere.

I agree we have the "makings" of a decent midfield, but the midfield is a current weakness if we are being honest, and there is no guarantee the "makings" will evolve to elite, which is what we need for a flag. Someone like Mundy could be icing on the cake and good insurance

And talking of cakes, I want my cake and eat it too re a quality KPF for #12. Problem is we are not likely to get a quality KPF this draft. Best we might get is potential, wheras Mundy is already there.

No easy choices here

Mundy would add alot to our midfield. Height and a mature body. Allows our younger midfielders to work off him.

Schwab & Connoly could be a influence if we have interest. I think we do! Our facilities and our club going forward should be appealling. Compared to Essendon who are dysfunctional and dont have a home. Home games at the MCG is a bonus.

We should look at Mundy as a utility rather than a midfielder. He has proven he can play back. And with his height can be dangerous pushing forward.

I would happily give up Pick 12!

We would but we have more pressing issues + Viney should comeover. Our weakest link atmo surely must be our tall keys.

IMO our Midfield & our current forwards have a lot of upside left to come, with a tweak here & there.

Our defence is just Blue chip/collar amongst the top 4 teams,,, battlers. If we want them up

& rolling like a Rolls Royce by 2013, we need to sort it now.

I would trade pick 12 for Mundy any day of the week, he can also play that highly skilled HBF role.

don't understand your comment re defence i.e. . . . bluechip. . top 4 . . battlers

Did you mean to say they are "blue chip" or "blue collar"?

Care to reword?

Would give Pick 12 + Bennell for Mundy.

Seriously good player, better than anyone in our midfield. Would increase our inside 50s just like DB wants.

Let's go all out for him.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
