So does this not go to an argument that its not wholly teh nature or character of the young impressionable player but as much the natureand quality of the clubs attention to mentoring and personal development ? i.e you might be able to take a semi roughie and polish him ?

I think part of the problem with Carey is that he was polished too often and by the wrong people :)

So there is talk about the draft already, which I admit will be quite interesting. I'm just curious do the other clubs put as much emphasis on the draft as Melbourne? Richmond have been a rubbish team for quite a while, do they talk year in year out about their draft picks? (I haven't actually perused any Richmond Fan sites.... Are there any?)

"But in terms of our ladder position at the moment, if that was to be maintained, we would have a top 12 pick. If you have a top 12 pick in any draft - that’s a good result."

--- I'd prefer to win a few more games this year and get a later pick to be honest.

Always preferable to win but have to be realistic also.

Our list still needs some additions. I think the consensus here would be through the draft thus the discussions.

Just on this character side of things, what would people rather. A player with great character but turns out to be just a good player. Or, a nutcase but a nutcase who can lead your team to a flag and kick 70+ a year?

I have had this argument with mates before with some saying they'd prefer the clean cut guy who is good for the club, but then others want the flawed genius who can win the big games. I prefer the flawed genius, obviously the flaws cannot be too bad, I guess the better they are the more you seem to be willing to accept.

If this kid got kicked out of school, who cares, if he is going to run amok most weeks, being the focal point up forward that we desperately need, then I will welcome him, up until he sleeps with half the teams partners, then he can go, but hopefully he has won us a few flags before that happens. Just like Carey :)

Ablett(Snr), Dermie, Carey, McLeod, Modra, Cousins, Hall - would love a bit of that talent.

I'd take Buddy. But not Fev. I'd take McClure over Carey, if you get me. One was an media monolith, the other a very effective key forward, both matchwinners, but one, a one man forwardline & the other a real team player.

Darling's only 190cm. Is that really a 'tall'?? Does anybody here consider Cam Bruce as a 'tall'??

190cm now at 17...he'll add 3 to 5 cms to that by 20

I cant think of a "nutcase" that has fulfilled that role. Geelong had Ablett senior and missed on 4 GFs.

So for the kid kicked out of school you might want to work what his problem before saying his issues dont matter.

Oh good. Well I'm glad that's settled. I hadn't previously realised that everyone grew 3-5cm between 17-20.

Hey man, you can't argue with that... It's science.

I can only see the dees using 3 picks this upcoming draft, so I would expect they would be selecting the best available at each spot instead of drafting for a specific need.

Talls are always the sought after, but in all honesty I think the emergence of Jamar and the drafting of Gawn/Fitzpatrick may have addressed this issue for the short term. They may select a heap of talls via the rookie draft ala Jake Spencer (who most likely will be retained on the list next season to further address this need), but the other 3 picks in the ND will be the best available talent.

U18's wrap up from BP

Probably doesnt say a lot of anything new other than as I read it there will indeed be some pickings for clubs other than GC and GWS with Barry noting theres a little more depth than originally suggested. A good chance to selectively top up.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
