Absolutely pathetic display with no excuse whatsoever.

If ever you were going to come out and play well, do it against our scumbag rivals in front of a big crowd. They played the men like the dirty [censored] that they are, and we let them.

On a bright note, if Grimes is not our best player he's in the top 3. Absolute gun.

Not a great effort by any means. But in all honesty we shouldn't be beating the blues. If the tables were reversed, we would expect to put them away comfortably, which is what they did.

People need to lower their expectations. Sure we had a good start to the year with a couple of narrow defeats, but we should not be disgusted by a 50pt loss to a team with a good chance at a top 4 finish.

Carlton will be in the final 8, but I doubt top 4. But you're right - all supporters, regardless of team, tend to see the "best" games as our benchmark, and that's unfair. The smooth, confident, accuracy vs Brisbane (say) may not be seen again this year.

In a sense, finishing the year with 6 to 8 wins will already be an over-achievement. Next year, however, we should be salivating for a top 8, and in 2012...well...who knows ?

But the thing is, take out the first half of the first quarter and the last half of the last quarter, we had their measure. And Frawley would have been invaluable today. Most Demonlanders would reckon that Carltank is a team we could take ... in 2010.

And Carlton supporters could say take out the second half of the first quarter and the firs half of the last quarter and we would have absolutely smashed Melbourne. You've got to take the good with the bad, and today, our bad far outweighed our good.

A lot of things that went wrong for us today we can work on but there are a couple of things that we do that no amount of development will fix. Playing on at all costs simply is killing us and there are still too many senior players who play how they want to instead of how they have to.

The ease at which Carlton brought the ball out of defence in the first half was mindboggling. Our lack of consistent forward setup and system is hanging our mids out to dry although having said that today they struggled on their own turf at the bounces.

In any case, a loss to Carlton was not unexpected. Gysberts was great again and we are getting important games into our youngsters but that is about it atm. Looking forward to seeing more players debut later in the year.

Am I the only one who thought a number of players simply looked as if they were not concentrating? I can vividly remember an incident in the 1st quarter where we after a Carlton goal Miller had not been quick enough back to the center. The midfielders had no idea what to do and Sylvia ended up contesting, but Miller continued to move into the square (lucky no free kick was paid!). Sitting right in front of the coaches' box you could hear Bailey screaming for them to get out and get set up! Scott West and Mark Williams just looked on in dismay as their structures came crumbling down.

I was on the verge of being absolutely embarrassed by that performance today - not anywhere near membership cutting-up lunacy, but all my hopes and expectations have been well and truly dashed after today.

Agree wholeheartedly.

Pluses: Grimes & Gysberts. Green great & Morton starting to show some form.

Oh and Syliva was awesome in the ruck.... again.

Something wrong when a second-gamer is our best player, and a number of experienced players who should be playing for their lives and careers put in very lacklustre performances.

I was filthy on Bate a) dropping that easy mark in the 1st, which resulted in a Carlton goal; then B) missing that goal in the 2nd after a 50m put him less than 10m out.

The latter after Waite got reported. The obnoxious Carlton trio behind were loudly proclaiming Waite's innocence and bagging Melb supporters as soft for complaining, and at least a goal by Bate would have given me some ammunition back. Alas, he missed and all I could do was hang the head even further.

Ugh, this episode directly cost us a goal. Miller was more worried about jostling with some of the Carlton defenders, oblivious to the fact Jamar was standing ten metres behind him having a rest at FF in what was clearly a scheduled move. By the time he realised and tried to charge into the square it was too late and luckily he pulled up before the line. But the damage was done, Sylvia vainly tried to win the tap only to see Kreuzer scoop the ball off the ground and dish to a midfielder who hit a carlscum forward lace out for a goal. Damage well and truly done. Pathetic lack of concentration for a veteran player.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
