Melbourne Wanting

I would not have a crack at any of those players besides taylor walker because they are either no good or would cost to much and be a massive rish....whereas taylor walker wouldn't cost too much and has shown a lot in his short career....although from all reports is a massive turd of a bloke but who cares if he can play footy!

Taylor Walker sounds about the right size to me as we have other taller & different playing styled types on the list.

We don't have someone in the old Neitz size & strength + skillset. I recall thinking that Taylor Walker, before he was drafted was a likely type forward. Maybe he can become that type of player.

I wouldn't mind seeing Scott Simpson picked up in the rookie draft personally. He's a big lad, 196 cm, and has some really nice aggression. Looks like he moves pretty well too. I just loved that tackle he put on at Casey two weeks ago, even if it did get him suspended. We could use a guy like that.

Speculation? Or do you know something I don't?

Without wanting to go into details, Thorp is a serious liability. His talent was not enough to ensure he stayed on an AFL list.

Unlikely to ever appear in the system again.

Or maybe Jack Watts could become that type of player.

Who don't we just resurrect The Goose :)

I would really like too see us pick up Ryan Murphy from freo. I no him (not very closely) but he comes from my home town and my wife and I are friends with his sister and brother in-law. Anyway he is out of contract next year was a high draft pick, a few years back is a very good forward but can not get a game for freo and has struggled ever since being on the list. Apparantly he and pav don't get on and pav rules the roost. Anyhow I have been interested in Melbourne perhaps pursuing him for a few years now that he is 25 and out of contract with limited afl opurtunities his stocks will be very low and a great chance too get quality for little cost. Any one who wants too have a crack at this suggestion (as that's all it is) do some research on him as he dominates the wafl comes in for a game here and there with freo plays ok they get beat and he gets dropped! I believe he is on target to kick 80+ goals this year.

Dont bother,

We have drafted midfielders good enought for the next 6 years, lets draft big only next 2 years and take what comes

Dawes won't go - he loves Collingwood! Know it for a fact.

Mitch Thorp could of been taken by the Demons.

Unfortunately our list was full and we promised to take back Michael Newton and John Meesen as mature-age rookies.

Perhaps we will have a second crack at Mitch Thorp at the end of this year....who knows?

Incidentally, I liked Jason Akermanis' idea to have a mid-season draft in the AFL. We used to have one in the early 1990's but it was made redundant.

Personally, I think it would be better to try and take a good young-gun key forward in the AFL draft at the end of the season. Although, I don't think there will be much left after the Gold Coast get their multitude of early draft picks.

Some interesting names, for PSD or token trade.

Top of my list would be to steal Ricky Petterd from under the Gold Coaster's noses!

Watts, Jurrah, Petterd, Bate... then the horde of midfield/HF players and a variety of crumbers.

Nah, I don't think we need a forwardline Joel MacDonald.

I think you may be missing the point of others that there are some underlying issues that will prevent Thorp from ever being on an AFL list again. I don't know what these are, but in the current climate today, his issues may not be worth taking on.

From my understanding Mitch Thorpe avenue was explored and turned out to be a cul de sac.

Or maybe Jack Watts could become that type of player.

I'm not thinking of someone to replace Watts. Broaden your thinking a bit. I'm talking about someone who can hold down aa F/F spot at around the 6'3" mark that can play the goal square or other parts of the ground. To supplement Wattsy.

In other words something like this >

C/L: Blease, Trengove, Davey

H/F: Jurrah, Watts, Bate

F/F: Wonnaemirri, Walker?, Sylvia

Dawes won't go - he loves Collingwood! Know it for a fact.

I don't think we need Dawes, I haven't seen much of him but that sort of size forward reminds of the one dimensional Fraser Geirig.

Wrong on two fronts.

The Mitch Thorp option was explored and rejected.

It was not whether we promised to take back Newton and Meesen, we were legally obligated.

Correct. And a few other clubs found a similar dead end too.

You all have short memories...yet talk like your experts....

This board use to have good discussions rather than a collection of people shooting each other down....shame those days are gone...

Thorpe was explored and was training with us then got injured, i think broken foot and so was our for 2 months and so went home to tassie.

That's how i remember it. I thought the club were initially impressed by him.

Taylor Walker (Adel) - Would incredibly gladly give up our second pick (which should be somewhere mid 20's?). Play him full forward in a team that should be half decent, get the ball in quick and he'll kick 50 goals. Also has enough size and physicality to take the heat from Watts and Jurrah.

Chris Dawes (Coll) - Would gladly give up our second pick (which should be somewhere mid 20's?)

Jesse White (Swans) - I'm not sure about this guy. I don't think he offers enough as a forward. He'd be a nice pick up to back up ruck and play forward for us, but most premiership teams have 2 legitimate ruckman and big forwards.

Mitch Thorp (VFL) - The club have already had one look at him, obviously he wasn't amazing, but who knows by the end of the year.

Justin Westhoff (Port) - I'm tempted to just say no without any proper explanation.

MCKINLEY, Ben (WC) - No, just a medium sized forward with dodgy accuracy

DOWLER, Beau (Hawks) - Maybe, very hard to value. Wouldn't want to give too much for him.

Rhys Stanley (StKilda) - Haven't seen enough of him to comment

Ryan GAMBLE (Geelong) - 184cm, no better than Petterd, Jurrah, Green, Sylvia, Bate. I'd probably have him for a last round pick or rookie

Stress fractures I thought. Which he had prior to training with us. I also heard that the club were not at all thrilled that he'd failed to fully disclose his injury. If there's anything more to it than this I'd love to know.

From the list Taylor Walker would be the pick of them. He can play although I suspect he'd prefer to be lining up where Kurt Tippet does. He's looked down on confidence this year. I guess the way the Crows have moved the ball forward hasn't helped any of their forwards. Walker is way better than he's showing at the moment (as is Porplyzia, Tippet etc etc)

Taylor Walker (Adel) - I think he's the right size to compliment our existing forward of Watts, Jurrah, Fitzpatrick, Wonna, Bate.

Chris Dawes (Coll) - Really the type of player I think isn't our type, (see Hawkins) unless he's handy in the ruck as well.

Jesse White (Swans) - I'm not sure about this guy.

Mitch Thorp (VFL) - No thanks.

Justin Westhoff (Port) - we've taken our rucks & Fitz

MCKINLEY, Ben (WC) - Too small as a key forward IMO. 184cm.

DOWLER, Beau (Hawks) - No nothing of him

Rhys Stanley (StKilda) - Yep, I'd be interested for sure.

Ryan GAMBLE (Geelong) - 184cm, no better than Petterd.

PAH!

These players all carry question marks next to their name. If you can land on via the PSD then great, or trade for a player of ours that wants to leave then fine.

But lets get serious. None of the players mentioned are superstars, and given the development of our list none of them could rock up here and get an automatic game.

I am not saying they are a list of spuds. But come one, the dees want who they have on their list to be in the forward line, not other clubs potential stars. We have out own potential stars in the wings.

Agreed.

I think the fascination with this kind of speculation is mainly due to a lack of patience. But in reality, all of these suggested either require a great deal more patience or have been demanding much patience from their respective fans already. No quick fixes here. Better players of own to come on/back.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
