The club as a whole lacked something, so how long will it be until the team can push through that barrier?

The club is different now, very different. There's a real sense that there's no way the team or the club was satisfied with Friday night. Most of us supporters can of course walk away satisfied, hell we played well and gave our all....but losing is now a big but, if that makes sense.

Here's the thing. Did the side EVER feel like that?

I reckon the fans might have... I think its fair to say that even the odd player, like Trav/Ooze may not have hurt as much as others. But I believe in my heart that Neita and JMac hated the mediocrity as much as we did in the mid 2000s. As for the current side, there's nothing there to suggest that ONE player is happy with losing one we should win. Not even the old heads. Green's speech after the Petterd dropped mark is one you should review. I've NEVER seen him look that [censored] off.

The term "honorable loss" is a WHOLE lot different from what this thread was intended to convey. The meaning you derive from that statement wasn't mentioned by anyone before you. And I reckon it's just plain incorrect to insist that that kind of acceptance of mediocrity still exists. Or EVER existed in more than a couple of players minds,' or perhaps in the fanbase. If anything, the club's direction from the president and coach down to the last player on the list over the last 3 years has PROVEN acceptance of mediocrity is simply not an option. Not for a club that is/was in dire straits like we were.

Tom Scully is one of those guys that will never be satisfied. That's why he will become the yardstick for the competition. I'm off to pinch myself as he actually plays for Us.

One gets the feeling he won't be able to rest until he's won a number of flags. A true obsessive?

It's fine for us supporters to be somewhat satisfied by Friday's performance, I know I was. But do you think the players should be satisfied? Do you think Tom Scully would be satisfied. I mean one less clanger may have been enough for us to win that game. It's harsh I know but that's the environment we're competing in. Winning is all there is.

The performance was great of course it was, but the players have to learn quickly that regardless of that it wasn't good enough. In the past i don't think we ever really grasped that concept-that's my point.

That's a long bygone era though. These players don't even accept a senior player taking a selfish shot at goal in a 50+ point win. (Ricky/Col) There's no evidence to suggest they're weaker mentally. None whatsoever.

Satisfaction must only return to this club when it holds a Premiership Cup, even then I think they should be looking at more than 1.

Whilst it is probably hard to fathom the satisfaction levels of the playing group. The attitude and professionalism of youngsters shown to date in Scully, Trengove, Watts, Morton, Grimes, McKenzie, Frawley & company (Tapscott, Blease, Gysberts, ... to name a few) may provide or at least spark leadership values, that may not be satisfied with one Cup, but contribute to a period of sustained success - which no doubt the club aspires to; has stated.

IMO i think the side/club over the last 46 years has often felt satisfied with the "honourable loss" proven by Danniher's rollercoster years...What other club has ever done that??

Sure players might have been [censored] off at losing, but where was the mental toughness that brings that improvement? Was it our training facilities or personel? I don't think our present side is going to suffer this problem, but i must disagree that previous Melbourne sides were not mentaly tough enough. Too many players were well paid, who were not challenged from within for their position in the senior side.

I think and seriously hope those days are long gone.
