I cant seem to get this thought outta my head. But I think Juice may play a ripper this week. Juice has only played in few wins in his 20 odd games. One win he kicked 3-3 and another 2-4.

Is this week time for the juice to fly? Can he Cuthbertsoneque, rise and kick a bag?

I reckon I am going to get slammed for this thread. However he has played a couple of ok games, he is putting his body more on the line and lets face it, if your every going to kick a swag of goals it would be against the tigers.

So go the Juice, I hope for your sake you can take a couple of screamers and dominate this week. Because in a year or so, with Jurrah, Watts, Martin and Fitz, there might not be much room fo ya.

Yes good call, this is one of his last chances. I expect us to smash them in the middle which should mean a heap of quality forward entries coming his way. WHY oh WHY oh WHY can't we just see him sit in the goalsquare all day and go 1-on-1 with his opponent? He would get 10 chances at least and if he doesn't come away with a few at least we will all know for sure. Last week at times he was dragged down to the ADELAIDE 50 and then nowhere to be found when counter attacked and headed i50. FFS Bailey just anchor him in the 50 please

Would be somewhat unfair to bring Martin in for him, but it could happen, as Newton's done nothing in either game he's been given.

If he does play, he's not going to get Rutten like he did last week. He won't even get their best defender (McGuane, who's been suspended). He'll get Thursfield or Moore, neither of whom are much chop. If he gets some room in the forward line, he could find himself taking some marks. Then he'll have to convert his shots.

It seems that our 'gameplan' involves our forwards running towards goal, rather than leading towards the ball carrier. I reckon Newton's a lot more suited to being a 'typical' FF who leads from the goalsquare towards the ball carrier. If we play him like that it will give him the best chance to kick some goals and make a statement.

I disagree Titan, I think he has done ok, got some nice possessions on the weekend, done some nice back up ruckwork too.

Still need much more from him, but the last few games he has got better.

I will admit that he deserves kudos for going into the ruck. I doubt before this year he'd done any ruckwork. But he gives his best shot when he's called upon.

I wouldn't say he got some 'nice possessions' though. I'd say he struggled.

I watched the replay and was surprised how well he used it at times too

Coaching staff have been very happy with Juice the last few weeks, and he would be gaining confidence with each contest.

I agree this might be a bit of a breakout game for him in terms of getting on the scoreboard. Still prefer to see him up the ground rather than deep though.

I think part of the gameplan was for Juice to take one of the big defenders away from the goalsquare, leaving room for Green, Petterd etc, unfortunately we couldn't hit a barn door early on.......Bailey plays to peoples strenghts, not their weaknesses......Juice did ok

When I read the subject line of the thread I thought it would be "Juice's week to take a contested mark" or "Juice's week to not get pushed away by a bloke half his size".

Then I read that it was Juice's week to kick 6 in an AFL game.

I suppose there's always a place for light-hearted, joke threads every now and then. Very amusing.

He may kick a bag, but I don't think this is one of his last chances.

I think his last chances have run out.

Unfortunately for Juice he is just killing time until another big man is ready to fill the role (Bate -fitness; Watts -maturity; Morton -bulk)

I don't believe a full forwards role should ever be a decoy for others. His primary job is to kick goals, his secondary jobs are to apply pressure when the ball is turned over and to help teammates kick goals when he can't.

Four years in the AFL. Has not delivered at least one passable game in that time. This season, playing as a full forward has kicked one goal. Should not be picked again in my opinion.

Yep good call. The tigers don't have much of a defense so im expecting the juice to kick 4-5 this week

I am somewhat torn on this subject.

At the game and watching the first on the web I noticed a more physical approach from Newton - see his tackle on Bock and the reulting dust up in Q1 and also note his 4 tackles for the day and the previously noted ruck work.

On the other side of the ledger when the ball did come into legitimate broken play or pack marking opportunities with him in the general vicinity like in Q4 I think he was nearly outmarked by Bennell or Bail or a much smaller players. He didnt assert himself - I cant remember seeing him lead once - and the midfield were begging for opportunities. ON the other hand it was a difficult day, Crowes double teamed the backline windy conditions etc. His stats where 5 kicks 6 handballs 4 marks 4 tackles no score - 35 SC points which is not much.

Richmond are stretched for height at the moment. Bate is not a key position player for mine. I want Newton to succeed. I think he has a make or break year and in the absence of an obvious tall replacement I will support him again. Martin is an option and his 3 goals commend him but the rest of his match report while complimentary is not compelling for me.

Yeah, I too saw a much more committed Newton these past two games. He really looked like he wanted to be there, and make an impact, unlike so many of his appearances in previous years, where he seemed to run around a bit like a headless chook.

But, for his size, he should be presenting as the leading, marking forward, and kicking goals.

Would love him to really turn the corner and become something special.

I have been watching Newton closely for about 5 years since he started in Sandy 2nds. I was excited once by hints of natural talent. But he has not shown the fundamental where with all to actual make it happen at AFL level. I d love Newton to make it...(Said that 5 years ago too). Still waiting but I dont think he will.

How times change Dfart!! By all reports players like Athol Webb were very capable, very smart and clever footballers. From reading Red Fox apparently Norm Smith was similar if not better.

If we had Jurrah fit and Watts has developed as a KPF do you think we would use them as decoys??

Spencer, Martin and Watts all put in for Casey on the weekend. I don't think Newton can survive the competition.

There is the key part of your post that sees Newton thrown on the scrap heap.

As for decoy leads, they are still very much a part of the modern game. Every player in a forward line will be used for decoy leads throughout a game. Really, when you think about it, all genuine leads that aren't honoured but open up space for the next lead ,which is honoured, are, in effect, decoy leads. A decoy lead doesn't mean that player is just going to run off randomly to an area the ball will never be delivered and he doesn't expect to win the ball. It just means that players don't all lead to the one area and crowd each other/bring their opponents into the contest.
