I guess if an "analytics expert" has developed a "formula", it must be right.

I really do not care to much for forula's however logic or common sense tells me that 10 draftees for 2004/to 2007,would be worthy candidates for a future priemiership team. They being,Bate,Frawley,Garland,Warnock,Jones,Petterd?,Morton, Maric, Cheney, Wonaeamirri,Spencer. Then add our 2008/2009 picks and WOW- make up for priemership team.

The reality is that teams built of great players like the Saints and the Dogs aren't automatically premiership teams.

All of our young players, properly developed, will evolve into a premiership CONTENDER.

Don't count your chickens.

So true Laurie. I think this para says it all:

"It is worth noting maligned midfield pair Richard Tambling and Brett Deledio have statistically outperformed many of their peers of the same position type and draft group, with both earning above average value ratings."

A statistician can have his head in an oven and his feet in ice, and he will say that on average he feels fine.

Anyone got an unpublished training reports lying about?

jayceebee31 - looks like you've got a couple of double ups in Gysberts and Trengove but a pretty decent illustration of the future line up nonetheless.

I think it's pretty difficult to give much weight to this report. It's a feel good story. However I agree that the premiership window is well and truly open for the period outlined by the Analyst. But there are far too many issues with relying on, or giving much credence to the report. Hopefully, more in depth analysis will become available (on an regular/ annual) in the future for forums like this to digest.

It's not our drafting from 2003-2007 that's hurting us right now, it was 2000-2002 that hurt us, especially the super draft in 2001 I think it was. That was the period that set Geelong(99-01) and St Kilda(01-03) up for the success they're having now. The big hole on our list is from 27 years old up, blokes drafted 8+ years ago. Green, Bruce and McDonald are the only players on our list over 27.

At the end of 2006 I thought our youngsters were as good as any in the league. McLean, Sylvia, Bartram, Bate, Dunn and Jones had all shown something in a competitive team. It wasn't these players that caused our fall down the ladder. Our leaders all came to the end of their careers very quickly and the poor drafting of 2000-2002 left us with no replacement senior players.

Since 03 our drafting has been pretty good, it's our list management that was sometimes poor. Long contracts to veterans and trades like the Pickett one cost us dearly.

03- 3 Sylvia, 5 McLean, 36 C Johnson PSD3 Read, Rookie elevation Carroll

04- 13 Bate, 15 Dunn, 43 Newton, Rookie Davey

05- 12 Jones, 53 Buckley, 60 Bartram 68 Neville

06- 12 Frawley, 30 Petterd, 46 Garland, 62 Weetra

07- 4 Morton, 14 Grimes, 21 Maric, 53 Cheney, 66 McNamara PSD3 Martin, Rookie Wonnaemirri, Valenti, Spencer

Of the top 20 picks only Dunn is of questional value, the others are all a tick imo. None are Elite yet but Sylvia, Frawley, Morton and Grimes could all get there. So thats a pass for 7/8 with 4 possible distinctions, too early to judge.

We had 5 picks between 21 and 50. CJ and Newton were both reasonable picks when you look who came after them. There are a few from Petterds draft class that have passed him but hes nhad injury concerns so jury's out and it's too early to tell with Maric but he's probably underperformed. Garland is probably the steal of his draft class but it's too early to tell. Overall a pretty good result.

Our only definate misses past 50 are Weetra and Neville, they're the only one's not to play senior footy. Another good result.

This guy may well be right and those critisizing our drafting should be having a go at our list management.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
