The player doesn't have a choice on whether or not they are delisted - contracted or not. You don't NEED to get the player's approval to do it, it's just more good will if you do. Remember, they'd still be players on the MFC list, around the club all the time with the other players and you are also hoping that they become good AFL players (even if you don't believe that they will be).

But you don't need a player's permission to delist them. We're still honouring their contract, they're just be on the rookie list instead of the senior list.

If thats the case why is it done so rarely?

Surely there is a distinction between a senior list contract and a rookie list contract?

I agree, Meesen will probably be needed at some stage. In any case I'm not sure of the point of putting Meesen on the rookie list, this is the year that we finally see what he can offer for the long term. Bell or Newton on the other hand are another story IMO.

I'd be surprised if both Newton and Meesen get 'demoted' to the rookie list. That would mean we'd be picking in the draft down to 50. Not sure if that's what the FD wants. Might be.

Any chance of re-drafting Simon Buckley if we do? I thought he was stiff.

I know he's training with North but I reckon our pick 50 would trump them.

Edit: Just been reading other topics and I've obviously missed the goss on SB being p@#$%d off at being delisted. Is it irreconcilable?
