If Talia and butcher are both available at pick 11, who do we take??

Both at one time or another were the "must have" talls of the draft- now seeming sliding outside the top 10.

I am torn- we a desperate for a new forwardline which butcher could be a part of, but it seems that Talia carries less risk but prefers a backline role.

The one who can kick the thing like a winger on the run.

The one who can kick either foot.

One who could learn to play offence or defence, Center Half forward, Full Forward or Key Back.

To me there's only one (of those 2) who I trust that could become that player.

My thinking re FullForwards, is that players who play from the goalsqare, but cannot play other roles elsewhere on the down days are a liability, more & more these days.

The game is changing & we need to stay ahead of the pack with our drafting foresight.

If you were going to compare Talia to anyone from last years draft ... it would have to be Jackson Trengove (who was drafted to Port at #22).

Jackson was a top 10 selection - but fell all the way to a VERY happy Port side at Pick #22 because of his sever hamstring tear during the year.

Similar height to Talia (196-197cms), similar movement around the ground, similar agillity ... similar aerial ability (although I think Jackson may just pip him here).

NB: I remember on Draft Day 2008, Essendon were shattered because they had his papers filled out (thinking he would be there at #23) and were so happy to be getting the 'local boy' who could sure up their defence ... just when they were about to get him into Essendon gear for the subsequent interview .... Port called out his name at #22. LOL poor Adrian Dodoro.

So in a weak draft you could expect him to go alot earlier. I really just like the way he uses the ball. I think he is a big chance to be around at 11

Obvious one missing is Koby Stevens. The only ones I see sliding are Tapscott, Butcher & Lucas but then again i can't see anyone outside jumping over the top of them.

Clanger you could be pretty close. Talia, Black or Stevens at pick 11 for me. I don't think Port will go for Ball with their first two picks (8&9), Pick 16 if anything. Agree with your possible sliders. I think Port will snap up Butcher. Will not be disappointed if Butcher is available at 11 though.

edit: Unless of course Essendon pick up Luke Ball at pick 10... ?

I like what i saw of Talia in TD but Butcher's actually a forward.

Talia, could be. Will be interesting what happens if a Lucas slides.

It's obvious that Talia has class with his use of the ball & his contested ball winning.

He is capable of holding down both Centre Half Forward & C Half Back, with Morton, Watts & a "Talia", we would have about the quickest & most mobile Tall brigade going around. Any could rotate through Full Forward creating quite a headache for opposing teams.

This boy could easily turnout to be a champion player.

Don't forget Jurrah...

I didn't, but I was talking about the bigger boys who'll end up being 95 - 103 kgs.

Jurrah isn't a key position player per say but rather a dangerous medium tall forward like Michael O'loughlin was.

Talia

I rate him but I don't think he is what we need which is a classy ruckman who wants the ball in his hands and a bullocking key power forward are what we need.

I.e. Panos/ Mitch Thorpe and Vardy

Talia looks very similar to Morton, Watts, Frawely, Garland etc

Our backline is stocked Martin, Frawley, Rivers, Warnock and Garland can all play keyback and I will be very much looking forward to what they can do with a better than breakeven midfield!

Need a forward or Ruck

I know footage always shows a player's highlights, and not his clangers. But I like the way this kid moves. Very much a modern day KP player. Good frame too. Colour me impressed.

I'm with you DD. I haven't seen the highlights package but only the Vic metro vs SA game. It's just all the little things like the way he was gathering the footy below his knees, getting to contests etc that won me over.

I think even if Talia were available at 18 we still have zero chance of choosing him.

I think he's of similar 'draft value' as other players that will be available, yet they play in the positions where we need to stock up. Talia doesn't (although he's capable of playing up forward, I think he's more suited to a role as a mobile tall defender).

Just my opinion.

Good article, as you can see already a big boy.

When i first saw his highlights reminded me a bit of Jack Watts' highlights.

I would love talia@11 Griffiths@18

A mobile athletic versatile forward at 11 and a genuine big bodied forward at 18

I'm starting to think that Ball will almost definitely be taken at pick 18. Thus, considering that midfielders will be taken pick 1 and 2, our only opportunity to draft talls will come at pick 11 and 34 (pick 34 being much more speculative).

I think pick 11 will be Tahlia. He seems a really great prospect who I believe could definitely be developed as a forward, much like Hurley last year!

If they decide to pull the trigger on a pure forward's forward, then Black, Griffiths and Butcher are the obvious 3 choices.

Pick 34 will probably be a guy Prendergast lhas his eye on, like Bennel or Strauss last year.

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
