Quick question. I'm not a really good study of the machinations of the draft and PSD. If Davey wanted a certain salary, and was meeting the pies to up his salary, and MFC didn't come to the party, thus pushing him to nominate for the PSD.... that would mean we could get him with pick #1 on whatever salary he asked for, right? So let's say MFC was offering him 300,000 a year over 3 years (random numbers here, no reflection on reality) and he wanted 400,000 a year over 3 years... He could just quit, go to the PSD, and get the money he asked for in the first place, right?

You get to name your price, yes.

Last week it was quoted melbourne had offered a 2 year contract and he wanted 3. Now it it 4 years you think? Thats to many, let him go if we have to. Sign him for 3 or float him on the market and get the best availible. Its to much of a risk for 4 years and he is not judd, lets face it!

The days of 4 year contracts are gone. He deserves 3 for his form and his leadership but no club would offer him 4 years.

If he wants to have us over a barrell for '4 years', and won't sign, then do a trade, - Pick 14 + Sharrod Wellingham.

Didnt hear that from Radio, work close to a couple journo's that are usually pretty spot on with this stuff.

For what its worth, i agree with most people, 4 years are very rare now, and i would think 3 years is more than fair. we have to be careful at the demons that the dog still wags the tail not the other way round.

Maybe offer him 3 years and the captaincy?

i have backed the new look footy department( DB,CC CS) from day one. but for FFS , to only offer Flash 2 years was rude, and as far as money , i keep reading about the front loading of contracts, Juniors on the vets list. and people say pay Burgoyne $700,000. give it to the Flash

I would do this deal today - i have a lot of tome for wellingham, i reckon he'll be okay.

Demon 3 claimed some time ago that he heard that Baliey was going to sign a one year extension tomorow.

Has also claimed that we were interested in Jamie Charman before the season ended.

Couple things mate, i clarified the Bailey thing straight away to say it wont happen straight away, but it will happen, and you will see, that it will happen and i will be correct. I also said the demons were showing interest in Charman, they were, no doubt about it, whether anything happens remains to be seen. i think you will find my record is pretty good here.

You feel free to write what you want, but i am just reporting what i hear, i have no reason to make things up.

I am saying that what you post needs to be taken with a grain of salt.... and you state that your sources are journos.

Why then will a journo then release this exclusive and supposedly reliable information in anonymity with no reward to you and not in the media where they recieve kudos and financial reward?

And as you admit you needed to qualify one of your statements after it did not eventuate and it still hasn't eventuated.

You must admit it gives grounds to be suspicious of your information.

I am not in the habit of badmouthing people, at the same time your credibility thus far is at best unproven. Even you have to admit that.

take how ever you like mate... like i said, no reason to make things up, and i am in a position where i hear things that are thrown around in the media and football industy, just reporting back, as last i checked, this is a forum to post ideas, suggestions and information.

Yep. As much as he's probably the biggest name we need to lock down right now, giving the best player in a wooden spoon team 4 years... at his age... is nonsense. He should look at players signing for 3 years elsewhere in the league.

On The Couch tonight:

Healy said he believed that we had a deal done in principle with Davey for 3 years. Then mentioned that now the picture doesnt seem to be as clear and made a comment about the rumour that James McDonald has been flown in from Bali to speak with Aaron.

Sheahan then said that he spoke with Davey at the Brownlow and got the impression that Aaron would be at Melbourne into the future.

Both agreed it is crucial that we keep Aaron. Obviously.

Then they speculated that we had a dip at getting Alwyn 2 years ago and maybe Essendon have decided to have a go back in our direction.

Thats about it.

Thanks, Einstein. That's the most positive thing I've heard (though have to be prepared to be shocked at this time of year). Hard to get a handle on things from this side of the country -- but thank God for the internet!

I saw this too! Very concerning. Wonder if Essendon are throwing Lovett into the equation with perhaps another draft pick??

I think thats a very positive take on it Einstein.

Mike said that the demons thought they had a 3 year deal agreed on in principle, although they are not too sure about it all now and that money talks.

Alluded to the rumour that James Mcdonald had flew back from Bali to talk to flash

He said he (a melbourne supporter and a huge Davey fan) was very concerned and Melbourne couldnt afford to lose their best player and a leader.

Hirdy commented that he wants to join Alwyn.

They all proposed that the Bombers have turned the tables on the Demons after they went after Alwyn last year.

These guys dont really dabble in sensationalism for them to bring it up on a show made up on predominantly GF talk means the word is out there, i am very nervous about this and will be absolutely gutted if he leaves, the club have the capacity to keep him and must do everything. On the flip side we must expect this talk to be floating around when a gun player is coming out of contract.

I can see some of the more senior players being frustrated if DB has stated that we are 4-6 years away from success. Why put limitations on the players and it would certainly get them thinking about how the club will operate until it gets there and where their careers will be at when the club gets to that point in time.

Its going to be a very nervy fews days.

I too believe that Essendon are pulling a payback for the huge deal we allegedly threw at Alwyn a couple of years ago. However, if Alwyn didn't leave, why would Davey?

I don't know who started the 'McDonald goes home from Bali to talk to Davey' rumour, but is there any proof that Davey didn't go on the end of season trip to begin with? It would make sense that a principle agreement was made, Davey jetted off to Bali, and hence nothing will be made official until he signs the contract upon his return from the trip.

All of this could of course be me making up theories in my head... I hate the trade period!

A worry indeed. Melbourne wouldn't be talking to Essendon or anyone else about possible trades at this point. All their attention would be on getting Aaron's signature.

Cheers for the info

Did he say whether it happened or not?? J-Mac coming from Bali?

hope it didnt hey..

if J-Mac had to give up part of he's only holiday time for a year, to go to another country to try to keep a Davey to stay.. well, we could prob kiss him goodbye..

It is also rumoured that Essendon has thrown a four year deal at him and that Melbourne may have lost the bidding war or not prepared to match Essendon.... This four year deal would make sense why he now wants four but he would struggle to get to Essendon if the deal wasn't right....

If it is a longer contract and more money that he is leaving Melbourne for I can handle it but is an issue with DB as alluded to with the Mclean deal.... If Davey said after Brock decision maybe coach based that it was me or DB would you sack the player or the coach???

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
