Yeah, agree totally. He looks pretty tired these days and seemed to be barely taking it all in. Has given us all some great entertainment over the years. Captain Blood is waiting for him upstairs! Thanks Louie.

Because media careers aren't included in the criteria which award Legend status. I loved watching Richards as a Kid on Sunday's World of Sport on channel 7, but he should not be a Legend in the AFL's Hall of Fame unless they change the criteria. His playing career doesn't warrant Legend status. He's a worthy Hall of Famer. Leave it there.

No way

Ablett and Carey are miles ahead of Lou Richards in any discussion when considering admitting Richards in the Legend status. Whilst Lou's done an enormous amount to promote the game via his media work, the Legend Status is reserved for those actions on the field or with an AFL Club. Unfortunately there is no way Lou fits the requirements over other such candidates.

If you're seriously going to consider Richards, why not throw up names such as Ron Casey, Rex Hunt as they have also contributed significantly to "promoting the AFL" in many supporters eyes.

100% correct. The media covered this a couple of months ago.

The criteria is weighted to on-field stuff... and coaching I believe. If that's what it's for, then Lou isn't up there. In fact, if it's awarded to fan-favourites... even fan-favourites who are universally adored and have done as much off field as Lou have... then it dilutes the award.

No insult to the great man, but you can't make exceptions for this.

Some good points being made. Perhaps he is not actually a legend of the game.

I reckon he should have some form of big time recognition, maybe not legend of the game, but how many years has he spruked/played AFL/VFL?

Could the powers invoke some sort of award like AFL Platinum Lifetime Servant or similar and only give it to those who have over 50 years or more of continuous footy invovement?

This guy has given his heart and soul to footy for over 60 years!

After watching the GF breaky, why isnt this man in legend hall of fame.Without him wouldnt have The Footy Shows.Love to see him in before he passes away.

Richards was a good player but a legend of the game he is not and will never be

His massive media contribution to the game is what is driving this crazy notion of him being inducted as a legend

You do realise that adding Richards to the current legends list makes him the 23rd best player to ever play the game ?

Thats better than Carey , Ablett , Flower , Hart , Williams , Mckenna , Doull , Murray and the other 100 i could name

Brainwashed Tokenism at its best

Brainless, thoughtless post, Enforcer25. Even if you think its humorous.

Richards might never be a Legend of the game but to make a statement like that says a lot about you!

Really hope I misread what you are trying to say.

If not, then get off this forum!

I'd seriously consider adding an exceptional circumstances criterion to get Lou over the line.

same here , that would add Casey in as well and maybe Beitzel

But it is not a MEDIA AWARD. It is for deeds done on the Park by Player or coach.

That is the Criteria. If you change the Rules, it becomes a different award.

Lou is a Giant of Football but does not fit the Criteria for this particuliar award. QED

I'd seriously consider adding an exceptional circumstances criterion to get Lou over the line.

It's a noble thought, to be sure. But it opens the floodgates. As soon as you say Lou is in for his media work, then EVERYONE will start arguing their favourite's place there. For example, I'd love to see Flower in there, and legend of the game he is in many circumstances, but the fact he never won a flag keeps him out. I'd rather he NOT be a legend, so that when Watts/Scully etc make it it's all the more meaningful. If you DO allow Lou in the numbers will double, and then they'll have to create an all-time legends or something to elevate the better 24 again. It can't happen, the ramifications, sooner or later, will be that the award loses its significance. If it's attention and accolades he wants, give him as many as you can muster, but give them correctly. I feel as though this is an emotional response to seeing footage of him looking a bit poorly during the grand final. I'd love to see him honoured in his lifetime. Even naming a media award after him. But not this.

The other aspect of this is that there are a LOT of players who were never acknowledged... usually because they supported a more fancied team-mate, or were VERY quiet, or because they didn't embrace the fans, media etc etc. Riccuito is a good example of this. I always found him quiet (though that could have been because he was in Adelaide), unassuming... but a champion nonetheless. Better than Buckley if I'm being honest, and we all know HE gets a lot of attention.

Andy Mahar should be in the AFL legends hall of fame

:D :D :D

That'd be Blllllllloody Brilliant for the Bllllloke!

I hope all the pro-Lou brigade will be happy in 30 years when Eddie McGuire gets awarded into the AFL Hall of Fame.

Still Waiting, not sure what your problem is with Enforcer's post, Lou is full of it, always has been & I am sure Lou would be the first to agree with that! Yes, its part of his charm, that doesn't make him any less full of it though! I think part of the reason people want him inducted is because Lou's been talking himself up for so many decades they've forgotten its all bs...

A lot of the Lou Richards spruiking has been coming from his two most recent employers, Ch 9 & the Scum. What a win it would be for them to be able to pump the media's contribution to footy.

Perhaps after Lou & Eddie they could give a Hall of Fame award to Salary Cap concessions & Twilight matches?

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
