 2009 Player Review - # 3 Clint Bartram

I wouldn't cut him if there were better candidates, but considering which players are out of contract, he is the first guy I'd look at.

But even if the whole list was out of contract, he'd still be in the first handful I'd put under the microscope.

IMO, I would prefer Barts over Cheney in the side and also Dunn, just my personal preference about their capabilities and roles.

The bulldogs have a similar player in Picken whos in their best for a Prelim final (Picken's skills maybe slightly better?), so I think Bartram should stay.

Fwiw, Dunn's contracted.

You are kidding me.

Cheney is a second year player and his skills are first class.

He is a definite keeper.

Dunn is also a keeper IMO.

Both are still very young and have good skills.

Bartram on the other hand has poor skills and doesn't have the potential to hurt the opposition offensively. IMO he should be traded for draft picks or an upgrade of pick 34 with another club.

Cheney is tough, and got good disposasl, great small backman

Agree with you totally. His girl friend is Rick Kennedy's daughter. Might we do a trade with the Bulldogs.

Players with defensive skills are just as important to team performance as those with the silky attacking skills, irrespective of where they play on the field. CB would be in the half dozen with best defensive skills. And to be competitive against the top teams, we need at least 2 or 3 reasonably reliable taggers, and CB is definitely one of those.

No, Brad Sewell, Cameron Ling and Clinton Jones are all one of those. They are able to used the footy effectively when they get it.

Bartram is good at negating, but doesn't inspire any confidence when he has the pill.

If he can change this, then he is in the bracket you are talking about, but so far in his career he has not.

I think he is a good - OK player, and in any other year he would be safe. Unfortunately he falls in a year that ordinary players have a contract and some other project players like him and Bucks are not. But we need to make space on the list and I think he is one that will be looked at hard come delisting/trading.

Sums up my view exactly Rojik. We have to find space on our list, and unless this can be created by some inspired trading of contracted players, Barty's place must be in jeopardy.

Apologies E25, didn't mean that he was one of the AFL elite in defensive skills, just that he's one of the Dees best 5 or 6. We'll need a supply of good defensive players as we move up.

For the three you've mentioned, I thought their disposal wasn't great to start with, but in the way of defensive players, they've worked hard at it. And yes, CB needs to work hard at it too, but you can bet that he will.

I have trouble finding players to delist and whilst I think Clint improved this year its hard to see him keeping his spot.

Interesting to see that Barty is nominated amongst our players as potential trade material in this article

Players nervous before draft

Melb players mentioned : Clint Bartram, Brock McLean, Paul Johnson, Brad Miller Article must have been written before last week !! Nothing really surprising here but it seems many of us here are not alone in thinking Barty may be on the table.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
