I agree with you and Geddy. The assertion that a player's disposal can only stay the same or get worse actually made me laugh out loud.

Freak is very fractionally right in that the 'biomechanics' of a players' kicking is usually very hard to change because in most cases they've been doing it since they were pups. However the raw mechanics of a kick is only a very small part of the total story of a disposal -- as Geddy already aluded to, there's a million other variables that can be worked on.

Morton's a good kick, there's no doubt about it. There's already been a vast improvement on his ability to hit a target since last year. That's the affect of work on all those intangibles already mentioned, such as adjusting to the tempo of the game and confidence.

Interesting question.

As of right now, I think most neutral supporters (especially non-fantasy playing neutral fans ) would rate Rioli as the superior performer, but I still like Cale as the long term prospect.

First off I think that a player with Rioli's attributes coming out of the draft (small forward with speed/agility/goal sneaking etc) was always going to be more inclined to make an impact earlier than Cale (light frame more of an impediment, no defined role/position coming in).

I would admit that Rioli is proving himself to be much more than a goal sneak, but I just rate Cale's ceiling a little higher. He has a unique combination of (in my opinion) height, poise, running ability that MAY allow him to become a truly transcendent player, able to play midfield, push forward and be a marking/goal kicking threat, or give a chop out down back. Now this may be a long bow to draw given he really has only played a loose defensive role that's prone to high stat accumulation. But given the tools he has to work with, and the improvement in the admittedly shaky disposal he showed early in his career, I just think he can become a really unique, special player.

Actually the last time I was so high on a young player was Thompson... hope we get a better outcome this time around <_<

You're not a very subtle thinker are you?

You're fanatical devotion to single issue elements of a players game is both boringly lacking in a wider perspective and egregious. However, you seem to be able to continually match this unaffected simplicity in your non-critical backing of any player you feel meets your criteria of being "elite".

Being able to be a very good or even elite player invloves the application of more elements than kicking - some of them intangible. That being said, Cale is a very good user of the ball by foot - well above average. He may not be amongst the exalted company of the very best kicks in the league, but he doesn't need to be in order for him to become top line. What he currently has is sufficient. Its also worth moting thay his kicking appears to have improved over his short career as he's settled to the pace and demands of the game at this level. I'd back it to improve further in the future.

Even if Cale's kicking doesn't show improvement, his other attributes including his ability to read the play, find space, mark, link up and his work ethic are a solid enough foundation for him to become very good. This is why there is an appreciation in the wider footballing community that Cale's ceiling is a lofty one indeed. From what I have seen (which is considerable for a 2nd year player built as he is) I'll back him to mark out an impressive career and be viewed as one of the best of the 2007 crop. He does needs to find more of an appetite for the contested ball to make the most of his wide-ranging skills, but I'll give him time to develop to do so, rather than rush into pre-mature evaluations.

As for the overall question of this thread, its far too early to be definitively declaring whether we made the most of chances at the 2007 draft but I think its becoming clear that we will do quite well out of it.

Your self-righteous, dismissive conviction that you are able to assert the MFC has blundered in its opportunities at the draft is symptomatic of the impatient and self-proclaimed wise. The irony of it all is that you're unware of the fact that your opaque arguements highlight the limited scope of your footballing "insight".

Rioli is potentially as good as Ablett jnr.

By Freak's logic, since those results indicate that Ablett is not the most skilled player in the comp, then none of those in the vote are, because none have a majority vote. I've been thinking the same thing. I felt so dirty last week when I almost threw my telly out the window after Tredrea pushed a Tiger defender square in the back to take the mark that led to the game winning goal, I'm actually finding myself tuning in to support them each and every week . Certainly not the standard against which we want to judge ourselves, but I can say without reservation that we are playing better footy than them at the minute and it's looking increasingly unlikely that we will win fewer games than them. Perhaps the first game of caretaker coach scenario will net them a win at some stage?

I'd assume given that it's a 'priority' selection' that it would take place BEFORE the first round, so that we would get 1, Richmond would get 2 (16th), Melbourne would get 3 (15th) and so on.

That's just a guess though, I don't even bother trying to work out the logic behind AFL drafting/trading/concession rules.

Hahaha, from the top tier of the G I was thinking the very same thing, was always going to be the case after giving him such a glowing endorsement!

Probably one of his worst halves and a bit I've seen him play in terms of making decisive errors leading to opposition goals.

I am a die-hard Morton fan, and even I know easily Rioli is better atm. Cale has the potencial to be better.
