Yeah, I was shocked too, but then Garry brushed it aside quite quickly.

I think he put Caro up to it, with him being able to claim he's impartial and also play innocent with the AFL.

Was definitely pre-planned though, not spur-of-the-moment, as they had a graphic ready to go detailing all of melb's sunday matches.

They went to the AFL who admitted it was "poor fixturing" on their behalf to schedule the game when they did... Maybe they told Sam Lane to pull her head in after she sunk the boot in on Monday, as she's written this story.

It really should've been Carlton V Bulldogs at the dome, but Channel Seven would've wanted to cover that match, that's why we played late.

That's exactly right. If the other match on Sunday had been Carlton v Fremantle, then we'd have been in with a chance to get the better slot.

However, this Sunday we've got Geelong at 2.10, whilst the Dogs and Saints have the twilight match at the Dome on the same day. I guess Seven likes showing Geelong.

I think this is about trying to compete for ad dollars at that time of day. They ( AFL ) probably feel threatened by the NRL ..hence the wanting to persevere with Monday nights also. Always find it curious that the body entrusted with running the competition all too often forgets the foundations and history of it.

No one is ever really going to want to go out on a Sunday evening in Melbourne in winter..its just not what we as an urban(suburban ) populace do and yet the dog wagging AFL persist. They might want to look at attendences to the earlier start experiment ( on Sundays ) which I would think is a much better success as it does allow we Melburnians to get home again in time for a full evening at home..Home is where most want/need to be before the work/school week starts.

But this requires intellect and we all know the AFL lacks this !!

That effectively sums up the 'team' side of the team v crowd debate. If we were playing decent football, the supporters would be more likely to be showing up. I'd expect this week's crowd v Geelong to be down on what it could have been if we'd played decent football last Sunday.

I too wasn't a fan of the 4.40 sunday evening time slot, until that is, i was one of the few who went.

It gave me almost the whole day to spend with the family and i was home by 7-30 before my son went to bed.

Apart from the cold wind, and the standard of the match it was all good.

Wow, pure genius. And what if yo're trying to develop a young list and you're in the bottom of a development cycle?

Pert will never have to worry about a poor draw so his 'solution' is symplistic and does not resolve the team V crowd debate as it applies to the MFC.

The only thing that will resolve Melbournes problems is a revised stadium deal or boutique stadium, especially as GC and West Sydney appear on the scene.

Something that just came to mind..

money...and weekends !! What likelyhood is there ( if any ) that numbers to a game could/are affected by availale funds of would be maybe/maybe-not attendees ?? What I'm thinking is..are there possile many people who might not attend a game late on a sunday arvo because they've spent all their readies ?? There are two nights of "going out " ahead of a Sunday game.. add to that -make it a late one and possibly there are x-thousand 18-35's who are a bit barrasic.

I don't have a family, except a Fiance, so i couldnt care less if the footy started at 4:40, just so long as we don't play like that AGAIN!

Totally agree. Weather is not an issue though. Its a winter sport FFS.

Right now we deserve what we get. Win games with attractive football & we will get exposure. The Broadcasters don't want us on Commercial TV at the moment. We are not a viable comodity.

Have no fear when the new Broadcasting rights go thru for around the $Billion Mark. The Fixtures of the Bottom clubs will be worse than the present ones.

This is from memory so I could be wrong, but I think after our finals win in 2006 our 2007 draw was very friendly a few Friday night games, a large percentage of free to air games I think between 15-18 games. The same year Hawthorn was give what is currently our draw, a ver low percentage of free to air, sunday games and so on. You win you play well you get the good draw, except Carlton they get one regardless.

I've been to all our twilight games in Melbourne and I'm still not a fan.

i was home by 7-30 before my son went to bed.

I didn't look at the time at the end of the game but I imagine it was around 7:10PM.

To get home by 7:30 you must live a more convenient distance from the 'G than most fans.

Which is all well and good when the fixturing that your club is receiving is sweet, fat and juicy!

Clearly they get the sweet deal no matter what, but interesting to know that they too have a 4.40pm MCG home game against Port Adelaide this year. So we'll see what their crowd is.

I mentioned on another the topic about the terrible crowd numbers that turned up to the game that all these late sunday afternoon games should be held in Perth. Makes more sense as it will still only be about 2:30pm over there by the time the match would start. They'd still have a big crowd and the the crowd numbers in Victoria would increase. Everyone wins!
