Note to Steve Quarterbrain -

The word 'chance' is pronounced how it is spelled.

It is not pronounced 'charnce'. There is no R in it.

You sound like a posh [censored].

He is not the only one who says some words like a [censored] either, there are a few other football media type who speak like this. James Brayshaw is another one.

Glad to get that off my chest.

There doesn’t need to be the letter “r” in it. It has nothing to do with adding a consonant to the word. It’s related to the vowel sound you make when you voice the word. The letter “a” can be voiced in a variety of ways (think of the difference between area, around, after and cat).

In the word “chance” it is possible to pronounce the sound as a short vowel (/ae/ as in “cat”) or as a long vowel (/a:/ as in “car” – we don’t actually voice the “r”, only the vowel sound). Our alphabet is not phonetic – we do not have enough characters to represent each possible phoneme, hence English is riddled with words and combinations of letters that can sound different to the way in which they are written. All Steven Quatermain is doing is voicing the long vowel as opposed to the short vowel. Both are completely acceptable forms of the word.

If you don’t like the sound, so be it, but don’t go claiming those who voice the /a:/ are somehow misreading and mispronouncing the word. All that shows is your lack of linguistic comprehension and your prejudice.

You signed up just to post that?

I think there is a good 'charnce' you speak in that annoying manner and have taken offense.

I take no offence cos I know you're just trying to wind people up.

I pronounce 'chance' exactly the same as Quarters, even if i think he's a massive tool.

I remember Dipper introduced him to me once and when I wasn't obviously impressed he repeated his name slowly and tried to shake my hand again. Idiot.

I pronounce it the same as the british do. They did invent the language after all...

Edit: Brilliant shutdown by Ho Chi Dee. Love your work.

The great YM has never been owned, and never will.

Fact.

Yeah. Except for that time he was kicked off the site for carrying on like a pork chop.

Never let the facts get in the way of trying to sound self-important. That's the Y_M way.

Got to agree with Ho Chi Dee. It's a common mistake to think that spelling and pronunciation are always linked. Try 'knife' and 'pneumatic' for starters (a little linguistic joke there for you all). Assuming that looking at the spelling of a word tells you how to say it results in things like people adding an extra syllable at the end of 'temporary' and 'ceremony' or pronouncing the 't' at the end of 'trait'. The science of pronunciation is called orthoepy and it is a complex and thorny area. What makes it harder is that pronunciation in English is an evolutionary thing. We can be sure that we'll be prouncing words differently in a hundred years time ...

None taken.

I’m simply of the belief that if your ego feels the need to deliver a harangue, you may as well have some idea of the subject you’re griping about. Unfortunately you appear to have been found wanting in your understanding of the English language as much you have been in your previous examples of football “analysis”.

And for FWIW, I tend to switch between the two pronunciations depending on the context and emphasis required.

I just started a topic about Demonology before I read this thread...AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!.....it's a footy forum with the occas, now n' t.......with slight diversions into other things (Hello Rudeboy).......Please leave YM alone...I actually read this board for YM's input........I think his username is hidiing that fact that he is really Rober Mugabe...a slightly ageing, slightly unhinged dictator with an overblown sense of his own importance.......at least he gets topics going...but seriously we need some comedy for light relief...all together now.....'Speak good English like that what I speak'....

I can understand why Brayshaw says it that way, because it's how they pronounce it in South Australia.

Greg Champion had a song, to the tune of "LA International Airport", called, not surprisingly, "Adelaide International Airport", which featured the the line:

"I go past the Festival Centre, to charnce a glarnce as darncers prarnce around."

It's a Croweater thing.

As for Quartermain; knobcheese.

Actually it's from the Old French "cheance" meaning "accident, the falling of dice", in turn from Latin.

The Macquarie says either pronunciation is acceptable. That said, there is defintely a school of thought in Oz

that using the long vowel gives one that little fillip of class.

HaHa!!! Adelaide International Airport!! Gotta Love Champs.

Our new Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said a couple of weeks ago that "Adelaide should be shut down!" First time i have fully agreed with him!!

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
