Experts predictions for the wooden spoon:

Rohan Connolly - Melbourne

Nathan Buckley - Melbourne

Robert Walls - Melbourne

Greg Baum - Melbourne

Martin Blake - Melbourne

Martin Boulton - Melbourne

Michael Gleeson - Melbourne

Peter Hanlon - Melbourne

Jesse Hogan - Fremantle

Samantha Lane - Melbourne

Garry Lyon - West Coast

Jake Niall - Melbourne

Andrea Petrie - Melbourne

Emma Quayle - Fremantle

Caroline Wilson - Melbourne

I really hope we can prove these bastards wrong!

Rohan Connolly's assessment of our prospects is grim. Walls and Buckley are more positive.

i think we might surprise a few teams this year, and i don't think we will be demoralised too often, or at least not as often as last year. i expect dean bailey will ensure we remain "competitive" for longer. ultimately there are more sides this year that i would hope we beat - essendon, fremantle, brisbane, west coast, sydney, north melbourne should be the teams we have a crack at beating when we play them

we need to bottom out again this year anyway to give us a chance to rebuild so i dont really care about the predictions. i want us to improve without getting the wins

Dont start this debate again Freak, mate please!

Yeah but he's not entirely wrong......unfortunately!!!

Ok WITHOUT starting the argument again. I am of the opinion that the key to success is a winning culture.

Sure priority picks would be very handy, but its not like we are going to be finishing 9th 8th 7th or better. So the picks will still be there (assuming the next draft is even any good).

I would much prefer Melbourne to string some wins together and instill confidence within the team....for a change.

I'm sick of that debate too. Please don't go there.

But back to the actual topic, that magazine today was one of the most useless pieces of tripe I've ever seen. Useful only to look at a few player stats and team lists. Surely a small article about each team wouldn't have been too hard? It looks like they threw the whole booklet together in 10 mins just in time for publication. Waste of trees. 1 star only from me.

The Age guide was very useful for sorting my Supercoach team in order to determine exactly who each team's rookies were

(i.e. most are very unlikely to get a game this year)

BUT

Player profile/information was rather varied in quality, to say the least.

e.g. (Good supercoach price and likely firsts player), Dayne Beams (Coll)

comment: "Midfielder likened to Simon Black. (because he's from?) Qld, but resisted Gold Coast entreaties. Tattoos".

(great comments, I imagine the tattoos must make him tougher)

Personally, I believe G.Lyon is on the money with his prediction West Coast). I'm a little surprised Essendon failed to get a mention. I don't think many of them thought hard when asked which side did they think would get the wooden spoon. Melbourne was an easy answer based on last season still fresh in their minds.

Given our youthful list it looks to me like a bottom 3 finish. WCE and Freo have definite home ground advantage and Freo lost a lot of games last year by a bees. Injuries of course will also play a part.

I think we will definetly be better than last year. We have a number of players available who were injured last year.

i really have to wonder about who wrote the assessment, some of the player comments were made by someone who hasn't seen a lot of the team during the preseason ie. meesen comment?????

Have a look at the back page of the Sport section of today's Age (the Sporting Life column). It explains that someone was asked to do something a bit different for those little player comments this year, and it seems as though people were complaining to the Age about it too.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
