Interesting article about Power needing to seek financial support from the AFL

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/port...7054738317.html

$3m in debt and and their very small support base, the AFL state it will take a generation for them to grow support, I think is unlikely due to their links with Port Adelaide and how they are viewed in SA.

It will be interesting on how they will be treated this year in the media, maybe the Tasmanian government was right in offering them relocation.

No doubt Dwayne Russell will start asking "If Port went out of the competition, would anybody care?"

They were crapping on about this on 5aa this afternoon here in Adelaide..... Really hammering the Power supporters for not signing/turning up....

One thing that really interested me was when Stephen Rowe (replaced KG on the show with Graham Cornes) said that "over the last few seasons Melbourne has been given $10m dollars from this AFL relief fund"

Is that a true figure???

If not can anyone give me the true figure so I can email a response to those bastards

From the inception of the Competitive Balance Fund (later re-named the Annual Special Distribution) to the end of season 2008 Melbourne received a total of $6 million in AFL funding from this source.

In the same period North and the Bulldogs received $12 million.

Even now, that is before their latest funding submission, Port Adelaide receives $250k pa from the same fund.

I think the AFL have gone increasingly lukewarm on Gold Coast and are certainly cold on Western Syd given the impact of the global financial crisis.

It seems clear that the AFL are indeed ensuring that the existing clubs have their houses in order and are spending more time perusing forecasts/budgets from other Clubs.

The AFL's joy at the turnarond at WB is certainly countered by the continued poor financial performance of PA. PA's position was always buoyed by the significant financial support of Alan Scott and his Scott Transport Group in Mt Gambier. Scott died a year or so ago and I am not sure his estate is financially involved in PA.

Plus the fact, we need to have priority draft picks left alone. I think we will need them again for 2010.

I would hope we are not too reliant on that.

However GC are definitely looking like a shag on the rock at the moment. Its not clear that they are certain starter yet.

From the limited I have read, a lot of the approval is down to the Qld Govt. funding right? And if the opposition win and don't put in the money this would put the licence in doubt right?

So I suppose my question, to the more educated on the matter, would the rule in place about the 17-year-olds go ahead this year if the funding is not complete by draft time?

I think the GC will go ahead...its prety much a done deal as they know it'll survive. Western Sydney is a different kettle of fish as it s doesn't have all those ex-pat vic's living there. They'll really have to compete for the hearts and minds of the immigrants in that area to get a strong following.

As for Port, as I said all the things they have drag out is what they have said about the dee's, ie low auskick numbers. In the long run I think they will be stuffed as from what I have read, unless you are born into a PA family you hate them. They needed another generic team like the crows, dockers and eagles to get a strong and growing base.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
