2 months ago I would not have said this..

I think our club has become more solid. The executive and the football department we have now could meet the challenges of managing any individual footballer.

There's something about Cousins training with Perth Dees which excites me. I could now imagine him in our engine room.

Come on guys, let's discuss what would have to happen to get him in a Melbourne Demon jumper. Let's explore draft possibilities and cost.

Let's explore draft possibilities and cost.

Let's not.

How old will he be by the time we get him? 31? By the time we're tilting at a premiership he'll be 411, well about 36 at best.

Even Robert Harvey couldn't last past 37, that gives him the most unlikely outside chance at a 1 year window when we're looking at heading towards a flag.

In what way would he help our team?

Posted

I'm thinking if we don't have to pay a bomb for him we don't need him to last until our premiership run. It is about Example and Leadership, something our supporters believe we don't have.

It is about developing our list.

Can he show Valenti how to gut run, for example?

You with me?

It's about building a proper culture for our club, it's about not accepting mediocrity and aiming for discipline for the club at all costs in all areas.

It's about developing a young list that can grow together and form the cornerstones of a new power in the coming decade.

Not about drafting 31 year old recovering drug addicts, who lost the captaincy of their own club through their own ill-disclipine. I'm not talking about disclipine on the field, he was a fine player, but off the field he was not and he would not help develop the type of culture our club so desperately needs.

Valenti can speak to Bruce if he wants to learn about gut running.

Developing our list by drafting a 31 year old who has played a handful of games over the past 2 years is not list development, it's list suicide.

Are you with me?

Yeh, everthing you say is right 45, but what if it could be proved he has overcome his addiction. Also coming to Victoria separates him from the social/environment of the last few years.

I remember a few years ago he could have become the lord mayor of Perth if he wanted such was his status.

He comes from good, supportive family as you are aware.

No hope 45?

Posted

I hope that he overcomes his addiction, as i hope anyone who is trapped in such a horrible situation can overcome.

But I hold no hope for his football career extending its boundaries to the MFC.

I would see this as a short-sighted decision which would contradict much of what we have been attempting to achieve this year.

I hope Cousins can overcome his ailment, but that should not give him free passage to our club at such an age with our club needing to rebuild

Media value? Sponsers? Brand? Excitement?

Plus potentially the best midfielder going around.

A 2 year performance based contract with behaviour clauses?

I'm excited about an 18 year old Number One draft pick coming to the club, maybe a trade of one of our older blokes for another team's younger player, but I personally wouldn't be excited to see a 31 year old don the Red and Blue for the first time.

It would be a media circus more than anything, and i fail to see how Ben Cousins could give us any extra sponsors.

And if you're having to think of behaviour clauses to sign someone so far out of your target age, well then you know you should stop right there.

The only name worthy of debate is Didak IMO

ok 45... not convinced though.. did you see the mock up pic they had over at 'ology with Cousins in full flight with a Dees strip on? Goosebumps 45, goosebumps.

Good night.

I'd sign him one year, first up, in case he either stuffs up again, or screws up again or he gets injured and cannot play on again.

If he gets through a season incident free and wants to go again you'd offer him a longer one.

Are you kidding me?!

He's a champion but sponsors are going to run in the opposite direction with this bloke.

Our brand means nothing apparently and it isn't going to get stronger with Ben Cousins playing with that arogant grin.

The excitement and media value will only be fulfilled if he screws up.

Stop looking for messiahs people, rebuild through the draft and have some patience.

Yes, I was there last week and it was awful but the answer is not Ben Cousins.

Cousins will fit in very nicely with the blokes at the Lexus Centre where they are always looking to top up with older players for short term success. He will also have some wonderful companions if he ever decides to just go for a drive around town.

He could always work in the membership department, last person worked there was fired due to dealing drugs...equal opportunity employers the old membership department.... ;)

Cousins would fit into the aging midfield alright, but the off field stuff with Dids and the Shaws may see Collingwood opt out of that race.

Cousins would fit into the aging midfield alright,........

The only place Cousins would fit in is 'doing the lines' and logos on the ground prior to each game.
