SANDRINGHAM v TASMANIA

Recommended Posts

Sandringham meets the Tassie Devils who they gave an almighty spanking to earlier in the season at Aurora Stadium. Tasmania has regrouped under a new coach and have been playing better football while the Zebras have their backs to the wall after five consecutive losses.

I know he has a lot of fans around here, so I'm sure you'll be thrilled to know that champion Sandringham full forward Nicholas Sautner will break Anthony Allen’s long-standing games record when he plays his 166th match for the Zebras on Sunday. Look for him on the front cover of the VFL Record.

Tassie is a stand alone club so the VFL's 12:10 rule applies although I would be surprised if any more than 10 Demons take the field in this one given the likelihood that Melbourne will take at least one emergency to WA. Reading today's HUN it wouldn't surprise if Benny Holland missed again as well. Clint Bartram and Cale Morton are also named in the starting 18 for Melbourne on Sunday. Confused?

Spectators at the game will also get a glimpse of a few of Tassie's carnival stars including draft hopefuls Aaron Cornelius, Mitch Robinson and Tom Salter (for more about this trio see here).

In one of those strange quirks of the VFL fixture, Sandringham Reserves play North Ballarat Rereves this week - just a fortnight after the two sides met at Austar Arena in Ballarat on an icy morning that saw the Zebras fail to score a single major. I expect them to perform a darn sight better this week!

Edit: I have deleted those players named in the Sandy squad who are going to Perth. I have also taken out James McDonald as he is the player apparently going over as emergency (based on - Final Selection: Davey only change - "Jeff White and Adem Yze will both play for Sandringham this week"). With White playing for Sandy it's unlikely that Jake Spencer will play for the seniors so depending on whether or not Benny saddles up this week, there will be 8 or 9 Demons in the team against Tassie.

Congratulations to Saunts, well done! Lets hope you end up with another 'Frosty' in the trophy cabinet at the end of the year. Will this be his last year? Could well be. Chad Lidell our ex-captain is another who may struggle to find the motivation to go on again next year.

Still no Ezra Poyas which is a shame also.

Also, anyone know whats happened to Tom Paterakis? Havent seen his name for quite some weeks.

Poyas will be back after the break I'd say.

Paterakis needed a shoulder reco and is soon travelling O.S.

Is that Waller ex Beauie ??

Yes, Waller ex Beauie boy.

And I wouldn't read into the teams that are named in the paper/on this site. Players never line up that way and often there are players named on the ground that don't end up playing and players not on extended bench that do get a game.

Nick Sautner wants to play on for another season after this one. Chaddy might call it a day at the end of the year.

It was a great return to the winners list for Sandy and the Demon players were all in fine form. John Meesen was missing from the selected side.

Sandringham 4.5.29 12.13.85 18.17.125 24.19.163

Tasmania 2.3.15 4.6.30 7.7.49 11.10.76

Goals

Sandringham Sautner 7 Holland 4 Liddell 3 Martyn White Yze 2 Crowe M Johnston Maric Summers

Tasmania Cornelius Richter Taylor 2 Bielski Hardy Plummer Robinson Shackleton

Best

Sandringham Carroll Sautner Holland Crowe Biddlecombe Bode

Tasmania Andrews Richter Setchell Robinson Koulouriotis Shackleton

The Sandy Reserves blew a big chance to cement their place in the finals with poor kicking for goal in the final quarter. Notwithstanding what Zebraman said above, I think Jack Grimes' workload is increasing and he is not far from a senior game.

Sandringham 1.3.9 6.10.46 8.11.59 10.19.79

North Ballarat 3.3.21 8.6.54 12.10.82 13.13.91

Goals

Sandringham Zomer 2 Gilchrist Weetra Hardiman Gilder Monaghan Lockwood Hine Kondarovskis

North Ballarat Faure 3 Luke Taylor 2 Caldow George Gregg Orvis Tarrant Tickner

Best

Sandringham Monaghan Gilchrist Gribbin Waller Fleming Hardiman

North Ballarat George Peace Caldow Peters Luke Tickner

I watched Grimes today for 3 quaters.

I thought he did well without being outstanding. He worked really hard to make space and used his excellent skills when given the chance. Defensively he was alright but sometimes beaten in contest.

I can see him doing an excellent job at half back next year, he now needs to concentrate on finishing the season well and having a very strong pre-season.

Cornelius and Robinson both played for Tassy in the 18s carnival if anyone is interested in that

Yeah being a Tassie lad i know a bit about them...

They will def be drafted in this years draft and would be surprised if they were not both top 20 selections!!!

Were the 2 standouts in the u18 carnival for a poor Tassie!!!!

Can anyone give more information on the performances of my two favourites, Carroll and Holland?

Also interesting to see that JMac was the emergency that flew over to Perth as Yze and White both played.. not that smart to put him on a long flight given he's recovering from groin injury, as someone (Jaded?) mentioned elsewhere.

By the way, I thought I'd mension Tom McNamara looks a player.

Defends then offends really well. He will need to be given a while but he will be a good player.

In the mould of Lindsay Gilbee I'd say.

i would've thought a game of football would be worse for a groin injury than return airfares to perth...

but it is interesting that a co-captain of the club is named as an emergency, and not in the starting 22...

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
