It's a bit of a stretch to say the players hate him. Sure they have underperformed and I'm sure he's not universally loved by all 42 players but I doubt many of them hate him.

AFL coaching is a tough and thankless caper. You have to get everything right to play in a way that you are able to make and win finals, rely on list management to get the right talent and player development to develop it, have to move personnel around the ground due to injury and form and also have to deal with what the opposition throws up week in week out. Add to this dealing with player welfare, keeping everyone together in a high pressure and ever changing environment and dealing with the public and media scrutiny that comes with a poor loss or player indiscretion. Depends on whether it's PED or an ilicit substance. The AFL policy on ilicit drug testing players outside of gameday is very poor as it does not extend to footy departments, AFL and media at AFL events.
