  1. It should be but the AFL won't give up. I could see spectatorless games being played from August (assuming things don't go pear shaped generally). They will try to limit travel so we may see some form of hubbing but Tasmania... no way The logical hubs are one interstate where all the non Melbourne clubs would be based and then one in Melbourne. That would give you seven rounds before the interstate hub had exhausted itself. You could then move four of the Melbourne teams to the interstate hub and 4 of the interstate teams could come to Melbourne giving you another 4 or 5 rounds. By this stage you are almost at the end of October and have played 12 rounds. The 17 round season would be possible but other than possibly the finals series it would all be spectatorless which would be considered by many as pointless.Another issue is would the media companies still pay big dollars for such a compromised season.. PS: I don't think it's possible before August because public sentiment will not countenance contact sport at a time of "distance isolation" and even if we see relaxed restrictions the distancing policy has another few months minimum to go.
  2. Kennett with his insistence on remaining in the world of pokies and white anting the AFL's deal for Norf to play more games in Tasmania a few years back is certainly not the AFL Commission's poster child. A dose of humble pie caused by a few years of bottom four finishes would be nice I think.
  3. 2020 is GONE
  4. A donation scheme based on success with players donating a percentage of their salary inverse to the on field success. (18th and the players keep 20% moving up to you keep 100% if we win the flag.) Hell if we had that in place over the last fifty years we'd be the richest club going around ! ?
  5. so it is a big fail by the coaching staff as their teaching failed to be followed by players when under pressure. We had almost the first twenty minutes of that game with forward dominance and could not meaningfully convert. They went up and kicked four quick goals...game over.
  6. so true and a good balance to the entitlement based claim by the clubs that members should not dare to ask for money back. Sure the players will give the fans a special salute or similar but the corporates if anything will get stronger simply because there will be less of them for a while. As an aside I worked for a large professional firm. We had seats for the tennis from the time Rod Laver opened. First year they were behind the server and around twenty rows back. Fast forward ten years and a few economic corrections and we were second row from the front as the former high flyers faded from the scene..
  7. with the soft salary cap likely to be reduced by a big number we may need to rely on less to improve our skills. Will be interesting to see which areas are cut and how.
  8. The WA Premier mentioned a period of up to six months before they open their borders again. Makes a 2020 season seem very unlikely. I also noticed talk about co-locating say 6-8 teams in one place such as the NT to play spectator free matches but would the appetite be there for months of isolation from family not to mention hotel living for such a long time. Isolation is going be with us all for the rest of 2020 to some degree. Where I am there are far few cases than in Australia but businesses other than the five or six areas listed as essential have now been closed for three weeks, going out for exercise will see you arrested and there's not much sign of it ending on the next review date of April 14. The only way out that I see in the next few months is mass testing and the indicators are that this is at least two months if not more away and of course the golden vaccine sometime in 2021. What was a novel experience a few weeks ago is starting to become a global norm. Keep safe and happy if you can. Go Dees
  9. Different times and sports when WSC was introduced plus perhaps most importantly one day cricket was at the time a proven hit in the UK albeit ignored by Cricket Australia. The revolution was also in the form of TV coverage and of course player payments. I would like to see a version of AFLX played at lower levels so we can see if it works as a game. If they then want to add the razamatazz later .. fine ...but it needs to be proven as a game. Think Rugby sevens as a model. I would like to see the game improved for TV at AFL level with multiple choice of camera angles plus viewer controlled commentary. I would like to see an MCG where, as in the old days, you could move vantage points during a game rather than be herded into allocated areas even if the crowd is only 30,000.
  10. Was thinking about this weekend's game that isn't. My belief is that we would have lost to GWS and would be going into this game 0-2. With a possibly wet MCG the Freo game would be a slog. Do we win and if so what is the margin I say we win by 14 points and limp on.
  11. We can only dream of having a comp as strong as the EPL .Not only are most continuing to pay all staff full wages the stronger clubs are paying match day staff (ticket collectors etc) for missed matches. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/apr/02/pay-cuts-furlough-or-deferrals-what-are-the-premier-league-clubs-doing
  12. Very surprised to hear that Adelaide are not in the group. The SANFL who own the licence must have been taking out a fair amount of the profits. In the 2018-2019 year for example they were debt free and had a cash operating profit of over $3M https://www.afc.com.au/news/236376/club-financial-results
  13. Looks to be located near my favourite grass verge. Great place to sit and watch the game around the 50 metre mark. The outer wing is a bit of a dogs breakfast with rather soulless concrete terraces but if they leave the gate open over there it is a pleasant walk through the wetlands at halftime. With the Blues and Hawks dropping their alliances I cannot see the VFL being played this year. NRL has axed its womens comps (they only had four teams.)
  14. sorry ...what is the development
  15. when you get a moment Andy would you care to comment on the monetisation algorithm used by the site hosting company (not your revenue...just the methodology). The reason I ask is that the youtube algorithm is very specific with different topics giving rise to different click revenues not to mention the location of the viewer. For example financial videos get some of the highest revenue and can be up to six times the value per click of a travel video . Never know with a little judicious discussion we might be able to get the revenue per click up by all pretending to be stockmarket gurus.
  16. You have to laugh sometimes. Politicians spent weeks panicking us and now they put this out. So the curve is percentage rather than numbers based ??? Early signs of 'flattening the curve': Hunt By Dana McCauley Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt says social distancing and border restrictions are beginning to "flatten the curve" of the deadly coronavirus. "Two weeks ago, we were having between 25 and 30 per cent daily increases," Mr Hunt told reporters in Melbourne. "Now we have seen a number of days which have allowed us to say that we have dropped below the 10 per cent daily figure to single figures with regards to our daily increase in infections. "That means we are beginning to see early cautious, but verifiable signs of flattening the curve."
  17. Cannot see mass attendance at sporting events this side of October but the US is a strange beast these days. On a different but related note Ramadan starts in three weeks time. Those who have lived in Islamic countries will understand that Ramadan is a time of large gatherings and feasting from dusk till dawn. Will be interested to see how it is handled. The Chinese grave sweeping month which is just starting has been largely cancelled here in Malaysia. Again this is a big gathering with cemeteries packed with people honouring their ancestors.
  18. All he had to say is that it was something that needed to be addressed as we learn more about whether a reasonably full season will be possible. It will need to be addressed however. Donations if they are to be made should be decided by the donor not the recipient. Club members are one thing but how about companies who paid for entertainment packages, super boxes etc not to mention MCC and AFL members. The list goes on. Airlines are playing games and pushing travel credits now instead of cash refunds. Kayo is expecting full payment although there is no live sport. Tough times ahead.
  19. it does not matter if the departing club is a negative,,,, and fwiw the Melbourne Lions supporters were ecstatic over the Brisbane 3 peat
  20. They have no answer because in reality they have already spent (a lot?? of) the money. Have a look at airlines "refunding" money if you want a similar lesson in obfuscation. Time for some honesty,,,,, perhaps
  21. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/01/captain-of-coronavirus-us-aircraft-carrier-4000-sailors-let-off-ship-die-theodore-roosevelt food for thought... this isn't a cruise ship as the article points out The captain of a US aircraft carrier, with 5,000 people onboard, including an unconfirmed number who have tested positive for Covid-19, has called for help to save the lives of his sailors. The US aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt was in the Pacific when the navy reported its first coronavirus case a week ago. It has since pulled into port in Guam, a US island territory in the western Pacific.
  22. Two events who still haven't cancelled but they are in the "they've got to be dreaming world" Wimbledon and Tour de France. Both scheduled for June. Imagine a rolling city of a couple of thousand through rural France (even if they banned spectators). Wimbledon without spectators is a long shot but they seem to want the crowd anyway. A lot of the procrastination has to do with insurers and the events not wanting to cancel in advance of government directives etc which would trigger the insurance cover
  23. One in six players reach 100 games so given that the training photo is five years old you would only expect five to six players at most given that the one in six is a rolling average. The median number of games is around 19. By no means is an AFL career a great outcome for most. Trading aside I see the current list as probably the most stable we have had for a while. All the more reason we need to see some success.
  24. I read that as well. I thought they owned the AFL licence for the Power but perhaps they lost that under their last financial restructure?? PS: Having done a wikipedia search it seems that the SANFL own the Power's AFL licence
  25. Just some thoughts.... The only rationale I have heard for the existence/continuation of the GCS is that of maintaining a media presence in a large market. The argument goes that if you only have Brisbane playing each two weeks the AFL coverage is flooded by the coverage of other sports namely NRL. As part of this is the argument saying Brisbane/Queensland needs a local live TV game each week. The downside is that it splits the local following and sponsorship etc which were available to Brisbane. Crowd wise Brisbane and GCS will always struggle. There just isn't the historical tribal base that delivers crowds week on week. You could say the same about GWS but I think that with the right product (particularly the inclusion of the ACT) that team is worth investing in. FWIW I think they made a mistake basing the team in Western Sydney. Sounded good but a central base is what was needed. Then again the Sydney Olympics saw the Sydney sporting precinct being moved a long way from central Sydney. They have struggled ever since to win the hearts of the the local as a desirable go to destination. While we are at it Port and Freo should not escape review. A few years back Port were in trouble. By keeping their old Magpie connection they alienated 70% of the local market. They need to realign and take advantage of the fact that following the Crows is financially prohibitive due to closed membership lists etc. I don't know enough about Freo but I expect they need to take a similar path. Tasmania...maybe but they need a covered stadium which they cannot afford.
