I think it says more about the desperation of clubs like St Kilda, North & maybe us to a lesser extent that players contracts are being over valued in the fight to get them to sign.

He will want to go home again by 2020 so maybe they could then trade it back to us. He wanted home to WA, now he want's back to Vic because of his misses, they split up next year & then he want's back home to WA... I don't think he's worth anything more than a 2nd round punt.

I worry about this and it's a big reason why I think we need an external review. I think internally we over rate the list and that is a big, big problem that has brought many clubs undone. Someone not emotionally attached is in a better position to look at it and give an objective opinion. My choice would be someone like Andrew Ireland or even Gubby Allen, people who know club football and list management.

Totally agree 'dazzle'... Without having seen much of either I'm kind of hoping Anderson, could see him on a wing in his first season and providing good value. Rowell looks the goods as a mid but would we use him there? ...would be happy with one or the other though, adds a bit more class and youth to the list.

I think it's a concern because of where we are on the ladder. I haven't looked at the other clubs and to be honest I don't care where they sit. We have a quality problem and we need to draft and trade well to fix it. I bought some of the hype but the prelim and a lack lustre preseason was a sell for me. By half time in the Port game I was well aware that our list was nowhere near as good as some thought. Forget picking and choosing outlooks, have a good look and go through the list and it's pretty obvious where the problems are...

It's not about panicking 'Nev' but we are not a fully formed list and years like this one don't make us a destination club. A free agent looking to move at the moment would rightfully see us as a basket case. So we still need to develop players and the draft is going to be our friend this year. If I look at that list, Oliver is a star. Fritsch is/will be a good servant. Weid, we can only hope...jury still out. Petty we can only hope...jury still out. Jordon I like the look of, could be a player. Forget Bedford and Chandler, they won't make it. The rest are going to be depth at best.

'Pennant', whether they did or didn't is really of no consequence. What Goody said at the press conference to my mind is a metaphor for this year. That he took until half way through this season to start to address the issues shown up from that game is really the problem.

I wish people wouldn't keep bringing up Hawthorn as the great example of what to do? Their list is in a totally different position to ours. It was/is an ageing list with plenty of experience & stars. They needed to move players on. We can start with plenty of NQR & injury prone players to get some new blood flowing before we get to Jones. We have no depth as it is without losing a player that can still contribute at the level. As for anyone taking Jones on, in the Hawthorn example you are so fond of they got peanuts for their ageing stars. What benefit would we derive getting a draft pick we may not even use for Jones?

Max should captain in his own right. Martin is right there... Goody's captains call to make Viney co captain was a rookie coach error and shouldn't have been allowed to happen in the first place. Said so at the time and still think so... He should step down and concentrate on his own game. Viney senior should see it's in Jack's best interest and more importantly the teams.

Nice condescending comment about only on Demonland. It would have to be the first year Reid has ever put a season together, law of averages says there is another long term injury just around the corner. I actually rate Reid as a player, he's very versatile but injury has always been the issue. Sydney have never had the value they would have liked when they signed him to a 5 year deal all those years back. Jones is durable & has been a great servant. At some stage he will be past his use by date but with the state of the current list/depth that's not now. He is a heart & soul player. We only need to look back to junior to understand the damage that can be done when you undersell the value of these players to your club.

Good move... Trade a durable club legend for a player who like his brother (Collingwood variety) struggles to get on the park.

You could see it shift in the first Q couldn't you 'Dee'. They started to wind up their outside game and at first they were missing targets but when that changed we were done.

The trouble with Kingy is he's late to the party on this one. It was obvious through preseason and into the first game that something wasn't right. Yet Kingy was holding the line early season that there was nothing to see here, the Demons will be get it together and be there as a premiership threat. Sometimes you just need to look at the game rather than the data. He believed the data that we had the best list. A good look at the list would have told you different.

Maybe they are, maybe they're not. ...but because of the positions they hold this is why we need an external review. The crew at the top seem don't seem to want it. ...do they have reason to fear the results of a review? The board need to act, the last board were a disgrace let's hope this one will do the right thing.

Not much point in developing his forward craft when he still has a long way to go as a ruckman. He's primary here as a backup for Max and whilst it would be handy if his forward craft were better in the end it's his ruck craft that's important...

Grass roots footy has done a pretty good job screwing itself also 'Pennant'... In the single minded chase to the flag clubs throw ridiculous amounts of cash at players & it's not sustainable. Others have talked about the good old days of the VFA and whilst the AFL playing Sunday's put the final nail in, the money in other competitions made it hard to compete. A lot of clubs have spent themselves out of existence and alianated a lot of their kids along the way...

Just looking back over this thread I started after the first game. I didn't expect us to be this bad but the writing was certainly on the wall. Injury has played a part no doubt. ...but the other big issues to my mind are the list has been over rated & our coach is flogging a dead horse. There may also be a disconnect between the players & FD...don't know if this is right but to have a disastrous season like this then there is more than meets the eye. Surely now we need an external review Mr Bartlett!!!!!!!!! The answers haven't been found from within and my faith that they will be diminishes by the game....

If Adelaide sacked Pyke and made a long-term offer to lure Goodwin
rjay replied to John Demonic's topic in Melbourne Demons
Just a feeling based on performance and a few rumours. Maybe off the mark but I do think his time was up. I think many on here have have rose coloured glasses and forget the discussion of Roos as a poor match day coach. Whilst I don't necessarily believe that, he was one dimensional and it wasn't the best brand of footy to play or watch. ...and for all the talk of defence first, we still got our share of beltings. A big part of his job was to take the heat whilst we yet again attempted a rebuild. A novice coach wouldn't have been allowed the time we got with Roos at the helm. I think he came in did his job and time was right for him to move on. -
As an assistant 'what', his record is very, very good. Just not so good as the number one man... We could do a lot worse than getting Bolton on board. Would be a real asset.

If Adelaide sacked Pyke and made a long-term offer to lure Goodwin
rjay replied to John Demonic's topic in Melbourne Demons
Roos has no intention of stepping in. My opinion, but I think the players were over him by the end. He was needed to do a job, he did it and he moved on. He did a great job by the way, no knocking him but I think his time was up. Those who think Roos would have taken us to a flag if he stayed on are off the mark to my way of thinking. -
If Adelaide sacked Pyke and made a long-term offer to lure Goodwin
rjay replied to John Demonic's topic in Melbourne Demons
He was basically offered the job before he took ours... He turned them down then. No reason to think he would change his mind now. The club also committed to a new contract with Goodwin at the start of this season. Despite how things have panned out I doubt they would have changed their minds on his long term viability no matter what some on Demonland may like to think. He's ours...like it or not. -
Can't really blame the AFL for this one, well not in the way you are talking. The VFA was a dead duck as soon as the AFL started playing Sunday games, probably on the way out before that in reality. The VFA was no competition and many of the clubs were insolvent. If anything the AFL/VFL have helped keep a few of the old clubs like Port & Willy alive, but really it's only a matter of time before they fold or move into some local competition...

Come on 'bin', their game plan has little resemblance to ours. They hit the contest, work together, spread hard, move the ball quickly, hit up targets in the forward half & have quality smalls at the fall of the ball. They have a solid defensive structure... We hit the contest, get sucked into and don't spread. When we get it we move it on quickly & bomb it in to non existent targets & don't have quality smalls at the fall of the ball if it gets to the ground. Our defence is a work in progress, let alone the structure. We don't need to emulate anyone else's game plan be it Tiges, WC, Cats, Pies...we do need to develop our own sustainable winning plan. A plan that suits the structure of our list. What we're doing isn't working, part is the plan itself & part is the personnel to carry it through.

'Billy', we haven't got off scott free. We've certainly copped a serve. ....but a few things. 3 clubs have sacked/retired/whatever their coaches...so this is always going to take precedence. It is now at the serious stage of the season and unless anything major happens at a club not featuring or likely to feature in finals the closer it gets to September the less a club will be covered. You can expect us to get a bit more coverage in the off season. The what went wrong articles will start to appear after the premiership race is over. ...and 'Dee Watcher' is thinking the same. Just posted before I finished this. Agree...

I've thought this could be the case for a while 'Redleg' Looks like we might be seeing this now...
