The Melbourne Curse
Curses are for people looking for excuses, and dare I say also people who blame umpires for losses and Mission for every game day injury The reasons are nothing to do with any curses but a number of factors many self inflicted others just poor timing or decisions Poor zone been covered by others but we didn't exactly have a conveyor belt of recruits coming through in the 70s Poor culture the old boys club off field who didn't move with the times in the changing game of the 70/80s Bottoming out when TV was about to have a massive influence The above set the tone for missing a generation of new supporters in the 70s and 80s Timing 1988 & 2000 running into 2 absolute juggernauts in the GF, Hawks of 88 were some side and we overachieved getting there. 2000 bit like 1987 put a strong run together in the backend of the year only to run into a dominant side set on redemption having fallen foul to complacency to the Blues in 99. They were never slipping up here Poor drafting - the drafting overall in the early noughties had a big effect which we are still recovering from with Jones a lone warrior survivor from that period. From 2012 onwards we are on par with most clubs with hits and misses each year but the Strauss, Maric, Blease draft was a killer. Molan was just an unforseen bust and our timing of getting it wrong with the expansion sides coming in was another blow Poor decisions with Olympic park when first offered is another in the list from previous boards which impacted our club greatly

The Writing Was/Is on the Wall
I hear you wouldn't like to trade him but Cerra is a good kid and Langdon is developing his disposal which along with his running power will push his price up

The Writing Was/Is on the Wall
In the off season I made comment of how I liked the way Carlton had built their list after getting all their KPTs in and had/would focus towards mids in their trades and selections from here. I was shot down by a few Deelanders who told me Carlton's list was rubbish and they'd be no good once Kruezar, Simpson and Murphy were gone. I am not all doom and gloom as others seem to be you don't become rubbish overnight and fitness, confidence a few fresh injections and a slight change in game plan will right the ship not saying we'll do a 07 Cats or 17 Tigers but we will learn from this. Nothing comes without hard work and the % we are off in fitness preparation with Oliver, Viney, Tmac, AVB, May, Jetta, Lever, Melksham is huge with our game plan. The ripple effect has impacted others on the list in terms of confidence and whilst we don't have much speed it looks a lot worse when we turining it over and lacking the ability to currently run 2 ways

POST GAME: Rd 06 vs Richmond
For once and for all to those whinging about Hogan being traded, forget about it he had checked out and wanted out. You can't have players who don't want to be there. And if any moron brings up Tim Kelly don't he hadn't checked out it was his manager looking for a better deal than the first two years as a draftee

POST GAME: Rd 06 vs Richmond
Good post Wayne there were positives tonight Effort Players obviously being aware not to rush in to contested possession on mass and get burnt on the outside for the first 3 quarters Defending deeper and not giving easy goals away out the back Forward structure needs a lot of work and we're still a long way off but a couple of things to like

PREGAME: Rd 06 vs Richmond
Not to mention the 10goal loss we may have tomorrow will see the AFL removing us from the Anzac eve fixture, which was another the sky is falling gem

Changes vs Richmond
B. Hore TMac Hibberd HB. Hunt Frost Salem C. Stretch Viney Fritsch HF. Melk Weid Trac F. Garlett T.Smith Lockhart R. Gawn, Brayshaw, Oliver I/C. Jones, ANB, JWagner, Harmes We need as many runners as possible across all lines against the Tigers. They will do the same as the Saints try and run us off our feet. Can't play the long bombs against them, but also need to get it in quick in a similar vain to how Port played on Good Friday against the Eagles Two way running and being on the back shoulder of your direct opponent are non negotiables

Who will the Demons target next?
Carlton are chasing Coniglio hard and have been for a while Zak Jones moving up the pecking order at Sydney this year may push his price up if he shines. His hard run and leg speed are what we need through the middle. Not sold on his decision making and disposal

Who will the Demons target next?
Whoever we target it's time to start targeting them before the price shoots up. May may be great for us but like Lever came at a heavy cost if they work out great. I like the deals Carlton have done to get Plowman and Marchbank in. I like both players. Having said that both Hibberd and Melksham were good deals which I think the club won

Our Recruiting.
Hindsight is wonderful but you need to look back a lot further than you are. Hawks dynasty was built on the 2001 and 04 drafts and topped up with Burgoyne Lake Hale and Mcevoy. Cats was the 99 and 2001 drafts. We are still paying for the poor drafting in the first 12 years of the noughties which killed our depth. Don't underestimate the importance of having a large amount of 8 to 10 + year AFL hardened players on your list Eagles - Kennedy Darling Shuey Hurn Yeo Hutchings Vardy Masten Schofield Reddan Shepherd Gaff Cripps and Jetta. Some of those players are very ordinary but have the bodies and experience to come in and fill a role allowing the youngster to flourish. It's why you see sides like Eagles Cats Hawks Swans and Pies bounce back so quickly after 2 to 3 years out of contention. The continous development of their lists and evolution of player depth every year. We are about 5 years into building what takes 8 to 10 to build into a long term powerhouse. That is why the injury list and drop off in form of experience is exposing our depth

ROUND 4 2006 - Melbourne v Sydney at the SCG
Round 3 2006 we lost to the Crows on the Gold Coast due to the G being used for the Commonwealth Games. From memory we went down in a close one and showed enough to have turned the corner. We lost Round 1 to Carlton the day before my wife went into labor with our first child. I can tell you now we were better in Rd 3 2006 against the eventual minor premiers than we were Friday night

Gryan Miers
A modern problem with recruiters, both are players. Constable is a classic case of a mid who knows how to find the pill, but the knock on him was his lack of pace. They focused on what he couldn't do rather on his ball winning assets. I rate Spargo who IMO has a good footy brain. He would have looked decent round 1 and 2 in that Cats forward line

Kobe Farmer
Sorry DD haven't got much info on Kobe and with increased parent sports duties dont get to see as many junior games as I used to or would like to. I speak with some from junior development in the Peel region. They say he shows flashes of great talent but not consistently, I think Kobe is only 16 going on 17. He's not talked about among the up and comers in that age bracket and not part of Peel Thunder Colts squad. I've seen big developments in kids in the 17 to 18 age brackets so you never know but I think at this stage it's a long shot.

PREGAME: Rd 03 vs Essendon
It's time to change things up, last week wasn't good, but it was better overall than Rd 1 despite the bigger Margin Players who make things happen need to play and we need to focus on workrate and lower delivery inside forward 50 and applying pressure at the fall of the ball. The Bombers like us are down on confidence and we need to apply pressure from centre clearances to their defensive 50 and not allow them to run and carry. Jetta Omac Hibberd Jones Frost Salem KK Viney Harmes Trac Weid Fritsch Garlett TMac Melk Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw I/C Keilty/Smith, Hunt, Stretch Wagner only one of Keilty or Smith plays and Sparrow a bit stiff but omitting him for C. Wagner. Although I'm not sure the FD will make 4 changes Out. Sparrow, ANB, Lockhart, May In. Wagner, Garlett, Keilty/Smith, Stretch
