I still remember the awful day when the bummers got their first win in the druggie year - they were a rabble of VFL and shoehorned older players and we let them beat us at the G. It was one of the worst performances that I had seen - we must not smell our own armpits and believe we are better than we are. We beat GCS, but so what? We are rabble if we let these flyblown losers get the better of us in Adelaide.

Smaller group used in the centre bounce setup - are we getting to our ‘pure mids’, and the choice who went through was specific (tactical?) to GCS. For example Kolt had zero attendances - so no tags this week.

What does our best forward line look like? Based on facts? Based on best guess? By the end of the year?

Carlton are playing an old ‘contested ball’ game style that will see them lose more than they win. Richmond were Ok, but Lynch sucks the big ones.

I think our biggest issue is defence, if we can create turnovers in the back half we are a chance. However, if we have no defensive structure or lack defensive efforts then we will be cut open like a sheep’s backside at Geelong’s mad monday….

It may be the new rules make him even more valuable, for a season or two. His clean taps to take away and goals in the praccy games were sensational. I think it is a fair discussion, but Max is not that cat.

Easy way to do it: from round 17-23, the 2 best performing teams not in the top 8 (games won, percentage) regardless of finishing position, get intro the wildcard Game. The interest would be intense for all the bottom teams and their supporters, and rewards late season form.

Cf: last year - Trac squibbed contested ball and Oliver was mostly average, only sometimes excellent. We have moved these two on and have ended up with genuine midfield nous (Steele) and a raft of youngsters that add real value to the centre. First possessions are fine, but they have been over-rated if you look at the stats - we got our hands on the ball first heaps of times, but didn’t use it well enough. 2026 should be better in this regard. Then add a new, positive style and refreshed ‘culture’ and we have more upside than downside. I hope we finish 8-10th, are a team people like to watch and are a team that challenges the best, even when we dont win.
