Good luck Eddie, the West Australian clubs have the biggest cheque books in the AFL. I can see Travis Cloke being the environmental spokes person for Woodside. The issue the Pies have Cloke signs they will lose players with O'Brien and Beams the likely candidates

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY
drdrake replied to einstein251's topic in Melbourne Demons
Secret deals, what a load of rubbish, we are all talking about what ifs, here is another what if, what if our team continues its current form wins 5-6 more games and we finish 13th/14th then we don't have to wqorry about giving up pick three. Jack Viney will be a Demon next year -

Our club has had huge success with our top 10 picks from the past 5 years, Morton, Watts, Scully and Trengove only two will be at our club in 2014 and if we can get a trade it may be 2013. This kid is a 250 game player there is no chance we are not picking him up. Imagine the flip side we don't take him, pick 3 ends up being another Morton and Viney goes to GWS with Sculls and wins a flag, now that would be a dagger into the heart of our club. -
I think we need to balance our best 18, next year we will have the 4 Jacks, is there a James in the draft to add to James Magner/Sellar/Frawley, or any other name starting with J, Jeremy Howe, a little silly but with good drafting we could field a side with 9-10 players whise first name starts with J, nas to be a record. Jeremy Cameron would fit in well.

Must admit I have a huge soft spot for Nev Jetta, I think this guy can play but it has to be in the midfield or down back. I loved the story of the family moving to Melbourne when he was drafted, I feel sorry for him due to the constant injuries he has had. It is a few years back now but his game against Brisbane at Visy park was one of the most dominate game we have seen from any of our midfielders since, hard was great around the clearances. I hope he can get his body right for the next 10 weeks, fplay a couple of senior games, dominate finals for Casey and retain his spot on our list for a couple more years. This kid is all heart and deserves some luck.

There is nothing more certain than our club picking up Jack Viney and if fit he will play round 1 next year. Esentially we are getting Jack Viney for nothing thanks to the AFL over rating Tom Scully, the Bulldogs will be cursing Ward is and always will be a better player than Tom they get one first round pick we get 2. We will add 3 first round picks to our list this year be it kids or established players, from most accounts Jack would be drafted between 2-10 anyway. If we pay a lttle overs and that is all it will be a little we are still in front Jack is in the club now, the club has managed him through a pre-season program, they are managing his games played this year. He is essentially like Sam Blease and Jack Watts in there first year they were drafted(hopefully except the broken leg). The club doesn't bring a player into its training program for 12 months, spending time and resources on him not to draft him. Injuries permitting he will be a 250 AFL game player. -
To make this trade work I believe this is fair for all parties, swap first pick as it stands pick 4(assuming Pick 3 is used for Viney) for pick 5, and our pick 13ish. To swap a pick doesn't look like much but will guarentee Port the best South Australian in the Draft. Their is one club that can leap frog us all Western Bulldogs, as it stands today they will have Pick 6 and 7 in the draft, they offer pick 7 we would have to offer pick 4 and to me that is to high a price

Don't get to hung up on McDonald returning to the club. Great player for the club and the way he departed was disappointing but you just don't bring someone back for the sake of it. If he is the best candidate for a role you go after him. On a side note Kevin Sheedy was an arse in his press conference and I thought James looked extremely uncomfortable with Sheedy bagging the Demon supporters and bringing up the way he departed the club.

The Good We won a game we should have won The Bad First 15mins of the game, we were woeful. The Ugly Brent Moloney, what is going on with you, I had you pencilled in for 3 Brownlow votes in this game but you were close to our worst on ground
-
We have been lucky with McDonald and Sellar down back, Frawley is struggling this year. Sellar to me is one of those players that just needs his role simple. We need Martin back, Sellar to hold down a Key defender role, Clark to stay out of the ruck.

Who do you want to see blooded or in the side by seasons end?
drdrake replied to Hells Gates's topic in Melbourne Demons
Strauss, he is a vital key in us going forward. He needs some luck but would love for him to get 2-3 games with Casey then finish the year with 6-7 games for Melbourne. -
Thinking along similar lines are we looking back or looking forward.
-
There is no difference between what we have now with Casey against having our own VFL team. You will still have 10-14 AFL listed players with top up VFL players, we have a Melbourne man as Coach that has the best interest of Melbourne, we get a good surface and facitiity to play and train on. The name is the only thing that would change. For posters that think Casey is going to hinder the development of our players, you are way off the mark, we have bigger issues with our playing group and it wouldn't make a difference if play for Casey or Melbourne in the VFL

Davey was the best tackling forward pocket in the game and the first of the new breed of defensive forwards. We had to move Davey because we had no one of half back that could run and carry the footy, the issue become Davey didn't run and carry and got the cheap handball. This isn't a slag of at Watts it is differing opinion on where he should play. I don't want Jack Watts getting kicks in the back pocket it is a waste, if I'm coaching GWS I'm happy for Jack Watts to have the footy in the back pocket, he doesn't run with the footy, he has a great kick we limit his options get him kicking the footy where we allow him to and the players we want him to kick to. If you see Jack Watts forward of centre with the footy you are worried, he will hit a forward and this will result in a score. That is where we need Jack Watts getting the footy not on the last line of defense.

It's a lot easier to slide in and out of good teams you have a base of good players around you, you don't have expectations on you from your supporters, you do your job and the club is happy. The issue with bad teams the supporters are always looking for a player to have a big impact when they come in and not just play their role.
-
Rubbish, for one Lucas was no where near ready to play AFL last year.. Having Fev in the side did not hinder his development in fact helped him, imagine if he got smashed by the biggest strongest defender each week, you learn nothing from that. Look at Casey's team this week, every available Melbourne player that is fit will be playing in the firsts, we have a Melbourne person coaching all Casey do is try to get the best VFL players to top up our team. We will have 12-14 players at Casey could even be more. Even if the AFL brings back the reserves you will have 8-12 players not on your list playing as top up players. Casey is a good fit for us.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

A broken jaw is never a good thing but in this instance it might not have been a bad thing. On concern about all young players is managing work-loads and the club has been involved with Jack and the teams he plays for to ensure he isn't over cooked this year. I watch a show last night about the U18 carnival and it was mentioned Essendon have also restricted the games Daniher plays this year, they mentioned he will be limited to 2 games for Victoria. From pre-season reports he had to manage some grion issues. Whilst most kids need to play most games to prove their value and most kids want to play every game, Jack has had a good break and will only really play half a year of footy. -
I'm on the other side, to me he is wasted down back and he is getting cheap kicks. This is what will happen to Watts if he stays down back, they will man him up try to get him exposed at full back or worse still get him on a small quick player, they will draw him away from the contest and make him responsible for a man. Sinclair beat him one on one. It is a short term solution playing him down back, he won't survive back there. He has to play a role similar to Adam Goodes can push into the midfield, play the link role between forward and back and then push forward to get a mis-match. Look at Gibbs from Carlton, he was the best midfielder of his age, they have played him down back in that sweeper role and is extremely disaapointing. Davey was the same we pushed him down back gave him easy kicks he just zoned off and every since he has been extremely poor. I'm a Watts fan but if we keep playing him in his current role we are better off trading him.
-
We are to tall down back and are in desperate need for small to mid size defenders. Grimes is playing as a midfielder and doing well, Nicho has done OK down back, with Bartram out we need Bail/Strauss/Bennell and hopefully Jetta to step up. Davis will get a crack at some stage, I have concerns about leaving Watts down back playing the sweeper role, I don't see the value of him controlling the footy deep in our defense and getting cheap kicks. We have tried Garland up forward and sent Rivers there for a half against Collingwood, to me they are better value down back.
-
What you offer is a swap in first round picks say we have 4 and they have 7 swap that and give them our mid first round pick say 13 and get Boak and their second round pick.
-
We have 6 pages on this topic, I wonder how many of the people who have posted will go on Sunday. I think we will be lucky to get 15,000, cold Sunday, 3.10 start live free to air, GWS have no supporters.
-
Well that is even better for us we will have 3 picks inside 25(subject to Trades) plus Jack Viney
-
I like James Magner, I can't understand why he is playing mainly as a defensive forward, Yes is his good overhead and in close but we are getting smacked in the midfield. Play Dunn as our defensive forward he can play that role and also kick goals and get Magner back around the footy.
-
The comparison was about how both at the end of their careers they lost their biggest strength the ability to kick the ball at an elite level. For both not only lost it but went from an elite kick to garbage, Green two years ago didn't miss, last year he lost it and hasn't been able to find it again.

Is the holding-the-ball interpretation really better?
drdrake replied to Traja Dee's topic in Melbourne Demons
I reckon on Monday the umpires changed their interuptation mid game, James Magner in the forward pocket Holding the ball first quarter rubbish, then in the third and last they missed 6-7 that should have been paid. Incorrect disposal is a huge issue players just drop the footy as soon as they are tackled, stronger players are skilled enought to drop/throw the ball to their teams advantage.
