ACL confirmed for Eric Hipwood. Sad news for him and Brisbane.- Which MFC player have you met personally?
There certainly haven't been a lot of players recruited from Portland over the years. The best known would probably be big Ian "Bluey" Hampshire who played for Geelong then played for and coached Footscray plus Peter Hogan who played around 40 games for Richmond in the 1960s. Doug Wade spent a year or two at Portland High School before his family moved to Horsham, from where he was recruited by Geelong after failing to impress in some practice games for Melbourne. Wade went on to kick over 1000 goals with Geelong and then North Melbourne. ? Of the current crop, St Kilda's Rowan Marshall grew up in Portland after being born in NZ and Jamaine Jones from up the road at Heywood was at Geelong and is now at West Coast. Nathan Lovett-Murray was also a Heywood local. I may have mentioned previously that my own football career was cruelly cut short by a tragic lack of talent and courage, despite doing a sterling job as 20th man in a West Portland Under 15s premiership (t.o.g. ten minutes).- Coach with Aging Team Wants Shorter Quarters
I reckon he's a ringer for Donald Trump Jnr.- Which MFC player have you met personally?
Spot on, dc. Although Stuie was from Digby (a one-horse town in the Western District) he played his early footy for Portland and won the B & F in 1949. Portland also produced Melbourne premiership great Clyde Laidlaw.- Which MFC player have you met personally?
No, grew up in Portland where Lyon Snr. coached in 1972 and 73.- Which MFC player have you met personally?
I had a chance encounter with Gary Hardeman a few year back - lovely bloke and happy to chat. I also met Garry Lyon, but that may not really count as he was only five years old at the time. (His father Peter coached the local footy team in the regional town where I grew up.)- The Soccer thread
Given the way England "won" the most recent cricket world cup, I have not a skerrick of sympathy for them and could not care less that they choked and lost on penalties. Can you imagine the gloating had they won this? Suffer in yer jocks Poms. Having said that, I would also like to see golden goal in future tournaments.- How do Bulldogs do it?
I'd really love to see an end to the tedious habit of players standing with their arms outstretched and staring at the umpire as if they were a slips cordon appealing for an LBW.- It’s coming home ...

I'm happy to have a rocket but I really don't want to relocate. Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.- Demonstone's Sneaky Sunday Surprise
This team was for entertainment (showing off) only as I thought it self-evident that they are all colours and therefore didn't set it as a teaser.- Demonstone's Sneaky Sunday Surprise
Well that didn't take long! All the players have two first names, of course. For their efforts, ManDee and defuture15 win ownership of another team I came up with but didn't want to put up as a quiz because it would be even easier than this one. Behold the very colourful Rainbow Raiders! I hope you like the centreline tribute to our disco/clash jumper. Given we had an early quiz last week and it seems so long until the Hawthorn game, I've snuck in an extra brainteaser for today. It's a very easy one and won't last very long, I wouldn't think. As usual, it's a team from the backline and in position, and a very strong side that would take some beating. What do they all have in common? B: Dougal Howard Tom Stewart Bailey Dale H/B: Caleb Daniel Aaron Francis Jack Steele C: Josh Kelly Clayton Oliver Mitch Duncan H/F: Gary Rohan Oscar Allen Jamie Elliott F: Josh Bruce Jeremy Cameron Liam Ryan R: Rhys Stanley Lachie Neale Dustin Martin I/C: Tom Mitchell Ryan Lester Sebastian Ross Josh Thomas. All these misspellings of players' names makes you long for the simpler times when Trengrove, Wonnamirri and Maloney were running around in Demon colours.- NON MFC: Rd 17 2021

Disgraceful! Melbourne fans would never do that with Bradshaw, Jordan or Wiedermann.- Football commentary does my head in

When we go to watch a game of football, we don't need commentators telling us what's happening. It's no different to watching a game on TV. I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it ... press the MUTE button and let your eyes and brain inform you. As John Kennedy may have put it, "Don't just whinge and moan, DO something about it".- POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Port Adelaide
Excellent win. Doctor Oilslick must be devastated. Among the "Go Dees" type texts from mates after the game, there was one from a number I didn't even recognise. I think people are starting to take us seriously this year. What is Channel 7's obsession with continually cutting to the coaches box to show a lingering close-up of Ken Hinkley's expressionless visage? They did the same with Ben Rutten a couple of weeks ago.- GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs Port Adelaide
