  1. The statement that we've had 5 coaches since 2006 is true, but slightly misleading. It sounds like we hire a new coach almost every year. It includes the last of Daniher's 10 years, and Riley's few games as caetaker coach, then Viney's few games in that role after we'd given Dean Bailey a "fair go".I don't think rapid coach turnover is a factor in our poor performances. Perhaps poor choice of coaches is more a factor, and similarly, poor draft choices.
  2. I wonder whether port played above themselves partly because of the loss of John McCarthy in the off season. They certainly seemed incredibly switched on. I remember how well Melbourne played against essendon the first match after Troy Broadbridge's tragic death. I'm not offering this as an excuse, just drawing attention to an interesting parallel.
  3. Our point kick-ins were rock bottom today, reflecting our play in general.
  4. Watching GWS playing tonight( nothing better to do. !), two players reminded me a lot of two former AFL. captains. One is Toby Green. The other is Liam Sumner, no. 28 for GWS. Can any other Demonlanders guess who I think they resemble (in appearance, and playing style)?
  5. I can't stand watching him . He obviously thinks he's so beautiful with his coiffured, bleached hair, and constant smrking.(I remember him as a "Ranga" when he made his debut). If you make a note of his predictions, or his assessment of trends in games, and check up later, he's nearly always wrong. He was a sniper on the field who delighted in thumping guys off the ball. i don't deny he was a great player.
  6. It will help Calton that MCC Secretary Steven Gough is still a dyed in the wool Blues man. I know he'd be rapt if they played at the MCG more often.
  7. Mattie Wade has the happy knack of escaping criticism. It's no surprise when he drops a catch or misses a stumping, since he fumbles so often in the normal run of play. If you watch him closely, you'll see his head jerk upwards when the ball bounces, unlike top class keepers, whose heads remain still. He's a good no.7 or 8 batsman at test level , with a terrifically flexible game(attack or defence). I haven't seen enough of Paine, Hartley or (can't remember the NSW 2nd keeper behind Haddiin......ex Victorian.....bats well too....how old is he.?) We need a better keeper in England. Just thought of the NSW keeper.....Peter Neville. Went OK as a batsman when Haddin returned to the side, too. And what a great slip fielder!
  8. Hey, "Longsuffering" ,it was Laurie Fowler that Wearmouth hit, not Robbie.(perhaps you made a typo?). I was still in the queue waiting to get in when that happened, but I heard the roar!I think that was the day I went to VIC Park having had a short haircut the day before, and ventured through the black and white crowd in my Demon scarf. A huge tattooed Magpie supporter grabbed my scarf , sneered at me and said....."got ourselves a new scarf have we, BIG EARS,,,". I just said "yessir" and hurried away! Not many Demon supporters know it, but we won our last three games at VIC Park...it had become a happy hunting ground! (the day Wearmouth hit Fowler wasn't one of them.)
  9. "Hawthorn"??????Oh...you're talking about the Tassie /Waverley Hawks. They've got nothing to do with Hawthorn.
  10. this photo made me want to thump my iPad! It even surpasses that smug mongrel Juddas.
  11. Don't forget Danny Hughes!, and big Earl Spalding once bumped a Sydney player so hard he dislocated both shoulders.
  12. What bothers me is that from what I heard we were going to pick Dylan Grimes at pick(?50-odd), but were stunned to see Fitzpatrick was still available, so took him, and ditched Dylan.By the way there's a third brother,Aaron Grimes. I think he's tall. Has anyone seen him play?
  13. I'm a disillusioned Victorian supporter. I think we have a captain with very low intelligence. What a catastrophic decision to send Tassie in on a perfect pitch, when all our fast bowlers were out injured, and we had the best (?only) spinner in the match. I think it was a gutless decision. White saw a bit of greenness in the track, thought about Hilfenhaus, and tried for the easy option. He does it over and over again. There is no inspiration or leadership skill in his demeanour. And he's too scared to bowl himself, even after getting 3 for 4. He just made enough runs at the end of the season to get another contract after a shocking first two thirds of the season. I say drop him, and make McDonald captain if he's fit again next year.
  14. And he dropped the "catcha" cliche, meaning he'll be back in contact,I presume!
  15. Get out the pepper, salt and tomato sauce..... the family club are getting sick of the party boy without whom they win more games. I hope he disrupts GWS too. I want them to wait at least 50 years for their next flag, as we've had to.
  16. Harder than Renmark?
  17. Thanks SO much for the link. Great to watch it.
  18. Interesting how the commentators kept pronouncing his name "Chaney". It's spelt with an "e" and pronounced "Cheeney". I checked with him personally at an MFC function. Are people mixing the name up with former WA Lib senator, Fred Chaney?
  19. I thought he played well tonight.
  20. Perhaps they go via Mildura, whence he came.
  21. Another interpretation of head-high tackles I noticed last Fri. was the free given to players who dropped their shoulders to try to escape otherwise legitimate tackles. While this doesn't constitute dangerous play, I think it's a poor interpretation of the rule. If a player ducks to try to escape a tackle , leniency should be afforded to the tackler. If the tackle is escaped....play on! If not....."holding the ball!"
  22. The point is.....it's all over as far as the AFL is concerned. BUT....is it over as far as the VCGLR is concerned????
