  1. I agree with the posters above who judged him a top- class player, whose career was wrecked by injury(?shoulder as well as knee). He was a good left foot kick with accurate and constructive disposal skills. Unlike most left footers , he kicked well on the right, too. Though short, he was excellent overhead, and was never found wanting for courage. If we'd had him and Lyon in the 87 Prelim, I have no doubt we'd have won it, and the GF v. Carlton, whom we beat three times in 1988. Incidentally, as an MC and interviewer at Demon functions over the years, his "sledge-hammer wit" has always been prominent. I think it's perfectly consistent with the sense of humour he has always displayed, that he was tongue in cheek with his comments about Zulus and job threats in the meeting room in 2009.
  2. I think "Fan" has unintentionally hijacked the thread about "who of our recent rejects is likely to succeed elsewhere", by discussing the merits of BP's performance. I'd like to return to the topic. I reckon Morton will do well at West Coast if he's not injured in the pre-season,and manages to establish a good rapport with his new team- mates.
  3. I met him a few times at sponsors' functions. He was probably the most modest, approachable, likeable Melbourne player I 've ever met. Let's not forget he'd been a star junior athlete in S A and the son of a star SANFL player , before concentrating on footy. Some would get a swollen head, especially since his footy was coming on in leaps and bounds. But not Troy. He remained a top bloke. I have to admit, I had a private cry when I heard of his fate. But for a while I held hope he may have survived , but was just lost. Since then I've seen footage of the power of destructiuon of Tsunamis, and realise how little chance he must have had. How did Trish survive?
  4. I don't think the McLean interview was a "set-up." In fact, I believe Brock was a last minute substitute for a more illustrious(and interesting) Carlton player who found he was unable to attend, and notified the organisers late. The question that led to the "tanking "remarks was most likely a spur of the moment discussion.
  5. I was going to suggest Michael Reynolds, another " Quaker", after the first clue.
  6. What an incredibly brave player he was. I remember him standing his ground in " the hole" in defence as huge packs descended on him. He never shirked. His footy wasn't limited to taking spectacular marks.
  7. Does anyone know how much the MFC gets per annum from the "Age" in sponsorship money?
  8. Does anyone know how much the MFC gets per annum from the "Age" in sponsorship money?
  9. I'm not sure how much planning would have been put into the questions McLean faced, since he was apparently a last minute replacement for some other Carlton player who was unable to attend. If only the original interviewee had been able to front up!
  10. Does anyone know how to get into the Carlton equivalent of "Demonland?" It would be interesting to see the posts before and after the Kreuzer Cup. After attending round 22, 2007, and facing derision from the Carlton fans after the final siren, I lost any qualms I'd previously held about "list management planning". I was hoping to hear some criticism of Carlton from the AFL after that, but it wasn't forthcoming . That made me think...once you reach the point where you can't make the finals,it's OK to plan your tactics to aim for the best possible draft picks. There is the advantage then of giving young players experience that they otherwise wouldn't get, and the opportunity to try players in new positions. Though there did appear to be a hint of lack of ethics in this, it had escaped scrutiny for several years before with other clubs. We were being naive by not doing it. I think our Club's administration must have felt the same way. In fact, AFL clubs are supposed to strive for excellence. Could it be argued that we weren't doing our best to improve if we DIDN'T maximise our chances of optimal drafting?
  11. It worried me that Mitch said he's nearly ready to start jogging on the "tready"". What a slow process is the recovery from a Lisfranc fracture! Let's hope that jogging doesn't aggravate it. We need him to be able to run normally soon, or he'll be handicapped by an interrupted pre-season.
  12. Chris was a Rhodes Scholar and was a more than handy amateur footballer.......he was in the Victorian Amateur team. By the way, it's good to see the Uni Blacks back up in A Grade.
  13. Any news on Cameron Pederson? The Age seemed to think he was likely to be ours a couple of days ago. I've heard nothing since.(?Footscray interested?)
  14. All very tall young players look unco and useless for a few years. eg P Salmon,J Madden, D Cox,J Stynes. But Gawn doesn't look so unco to me.
  15. It was Glenn McLean. I hated losing him at the time. Thought he was a future champ. He faded away. I wonder if he barracks for us or them now.....surely not the filth!!
  16. I'm amazed at the complete lack of coverage in our papers. I couldn't find any mention of the game in the Age or the H Sun.
  17. Why can't he play AFL next year? He turns 18 in February. He'll be nearly 20 by the end of his first AFL season. GWS and Gold Coast seem to play a lot of 18 year olds. I presume their birthdays must fall late in the year.
  18. Thanks for the info,Chelly. Very observant of you to note that.
  19. Does any one know of a website or phone app. that we could watch the game on? Is it on local radio? Incidentally, that 2nd semi score reminds me of that great Grand Final day in 1960 when we gained retribution against Collingwood!
