I was at the Standard in Fitzroy last night trying to escape football thoughts . . . .
They have a huge framed poster on the wall commemorating that match, with pictures of the scoreboard and all of Fitzroy's players.
I could only laugh.
Watts was OK, yes.
Jones was definitely not our best "by far". Between his useless handballs and stubbornness trying to break tackles, I can't believe people here missed the bit where it was his turn to go at the opposition and he chickened out. Squibbed it. Shrunk.
Like Moloney and Sylvia, when the going gets tough, Jones doesn't go.
There's being younger, shorter, lighter and more inexperienced.
And then there's not displaying any intensity, heart and effort. THAT is crossing the line, and that is why Demonland is imploding with [censored] off paid up members.
Brad Green was the most disappointing last night. Can't drop him though. And we delisted our performing captain.
Without a doubt, Bennell has to go.
So many players were rubbish, could drop them all . . . .
OUT: Bennell, Morton
IN: Two guys who give a [censored].
If you haven't come to the conclusion that Dean Bailey is an inept game day coach, you are a slow learner indeed.
However he has much traction within the inner sanctum, and will see out the season.
It's been a completely bizarre start to the season.
We still haven't played well and we're seventh on the ladder.
There is a lot of pain to come, and I mean A LOT, if we don't (coaches AND players) pull our fingers out.
It's amazing we have so many players that love the wide open spaces, we must be shoo-ins.
I thought Petterd was the best performing sub, so give the spot to him.
Bennell or Dunn out, both pretty lousy this year.
Maybe look at their heights and builds and check out the progress of similarly proportioned draftees (Gumbleton, Butcher, Hansen).
Y'know, just for argument's sake.
What also may be interesting is to see which of our picks were rated where they went, and which were surprising early.
Guys like Shuey were rated 'higher' than Strauss and Blease but it seems BP placed a major emphasis on getting guys who had already played together and were very unlikely to want to return home. Thus we have a lot of guys who played for Vic Metro from the same group. We played it very 'safe' - one could argue (at the time) that Strauss was an 'inspired choice' or he was a 'safe choice' and I lean towards the latter viewpoint. Same goes for Cook, Blease, Maric and probably a few others.
So they've come to Melbourne already knowing each other and are perhaps less intimidated by the standards of each other's performance.
It's an unhelpful dynamic IMO.
