The Art Vanderlay Thread

Featured Replies

This time two years ago the kid from the Western Jets was the big bolter of the AFL draft pool. Despite his diminutive stature and that stocky build, the pundits were speaking of the hirsute youngster in hushed tones of reverence and the words, "top five pick" were constantly being associated with his name. Some even believed he might be selected at number one in the 2008 AFL National Draft ahead of Jack Watts and Nick Naitanui.

All that changed when news of the "incident" hit the football world like a sledgehammer but last week when Vanderlay was released on parole after serving 18 months of a two year sentence.

Unfortunately, his release from custody came a handful of days too late for him to be claimed by the Gold Coast Suns as a player previously nominated for the Draft under rule 35.5. One source close to the Suns indicated that if available, he would have found a new home at the Lexus Centre as part of the Krakouer deal and a rumour was circulating that he had been wearing the famous black and white stripes for some time in anticipation of his comeback. However, a prison officer has squashed this rumour stating under cover of anonymity that the gear was in fact standard prison issue at Port Phillip Prison.

If we don't get a KPF, I hope we go for him with pick 12!

I don't get it.

I think our drafting strategy has been pretty clear in regards to picking up players that have character issues (which I assume he does).

And prisoners wear Green track suits. Red ones if you're a real pain.

EDIT: oh that Art vandalay... now I get it.

I am assuming this thread is some sort of pisstake (Art Vandelay is a Seinfeld character), but it's on a level that is beyond me.

Edit: Got it: http://demonland.com...=1entry201636 . It seems I even got the joke at the time demon_laugh.gif !

So that import/export business wasn't fully above board?

On the plus side, at least I can get quality latex products again.

I guess it's more palatable than the "Re-Recruit Travis Johnstone" one-man-army thread...

You make a good point there. I think Art and Travis would get on together like a house on fire.

I think Art and Travis may be the same person

Odd how they have never been seen together!

Unlikely to slide to 12. I'd prefer Marty McGurk anyway, especially if we're drafting on a needs basis.

Killer left foot I gather.

"Look, LOOK! Behind you - the witch, THE WIIIIITCH!!!"

"And guess what - Dil turns out to be a man!!!"

"The guy with the limp IS Keysor Soze"

"Son, there's no Santa"

Need I go on ....

Other potential draftees from that year were Kel Varnson and Martin van Nostrand. Unfortunate tragedy befell the trio however on a pre-season trip to France. Their small private jet ("I bet Chris Judd flies in a bigger one" Vandelay was heard to remark) was grounded in a country town, and the trio, along with Varnson's ex-girlfriend, were embroiled in a legal mix-up. Unsurprisingly, renowned close-talker and Muck-Raker No. 1, Craig "Stinker" Huchison, was there to witness it all. A tell-all account is reportedly in the works, with the rights to the book already sold to Pendant Publishing.

Art's family have asked that his privacy be respected and, on his behalf, categorically deny he had anything to do with setting that house on fire. You'll have to ask Trapper's manager about that one.

Rather amused to see in that thread the call for Brock to be named captain as well.

Rereading that thread just confirms that I need to watch more TV, or perhaps I watch enough as it is!

Also the CJ thing stung a bit. Not cos he's a great player, but because it painted the club in a bad light. If Jurrah or Bail turn out to be better players than CJ then we have the last laugh, as they were players we may not have taken with our extra pick.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha lol

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
