Sandy Game 1/3/08

Redleg

Recommended Posts

Barry from Beach Road has just rung and advised that Port won the reserves by 43 points and that Dunn, Chris Johnson, Maric, Zomer, McNamara, Martin and Cheney are listed to play for the Zebras. Barry will SMS me the scores, best players and goalkickers at halftime and I will post them for Demonlanders. Barry also said that Mavis permitting, he will post a full report when he gets home while downing a few frothies.

He has downed his first one at the TBO and has advised that Mickrocks, a member of the successfull Demonlanders football team that thrashed the Sainsational boys, is goal umpiring in the main game.

Progress scores : Sandy 3.0.18 Port 4.3.27 CJ doing well.

Thanks gents - keep em rolling in. I'll be interested to see how Dunny and his man mountain status pull up.

By my calculations that still leaves Bartman, Riv, Wheaters, Bruce and Wheels to have a run. Hopefully the first four can get a run in the next couple of weeks (permission pending for the week before Rd 1).

Three quarter time and it's Sandy 4.8.32 Port 11.10.76 in a dull game. CJ and Dunn getting a bit of a run. Conditions swirly and the standard of play befits the practive match of the season.

Hey Guys.

This is M_N_M over from ology.

Just thought i would make an account over here just in case i had the need to post anything.

How long is Left Redleg?

Thanks

Go Dees!

Welcome M_N_M. We're all big Juice fans over here too!

Let me say first up that the frothies were just about the most exciting thing going down here at Trevor Barker Oval. Lynden Dunn and Chris Johnson both had about 50% game time and I think survival was the name of the game as far as both of them were concerned as it was their first hit outs for the year. They looked likey survived but they did nothing spectacular and would have to considerably build up on today's efforts in order to make the first game of the real season. Dunn had a shot against the win from 45 metres out and this was a major test for someone recovering from a groin injury - the result was an out of bounds on the full.

Of the other MFC players Stef Martin rucked but was overwhelmed by bigger oppoenents. Around the ground he did well and kicked long but without much accuracy and he missed a long shot at the big sticks by a fair bit for a point. Addam Maric was impressive with his enthusiasm. He started off with a couple of points which was a bit uncharacteristic for someone with a reputation for accuracy in front of goal but he atoned for that with two goals for a 50% Champion Date conversion rate. His second goal, a banana from the boundary was about the most exciting thing of the day (apart form Mick Rocks' goal umpiring which was excellent and certainly better than the other maggots who were officiating out on the ground but I won't mention the 50 metre penalties and the inconsistent decision making because I don't whinge).

Trent Zomer was in and out of the game and I liked both Kyle Cheney and Tom McNamara in defence but they are both still a long way off.

The Zebras had quite a few of their regular better players missing - Chad Liddell, Rod Crowe, Andy Biddlecombe and David Gallagher. Peter Summers appeared to get reported for a trip in the last quarter. Generally, I felt the whole team was underdone and they lacked system. Coach Andy Lovell spent a lot of his time interchanging players on and off to give his large interchange bench adequate game time.

Sandringham 3.0.18 4.6.30 4.8.32 7.12.54

Port Melbourne 4.3.27 6.8.44 11.10.76 13.15.93

Goals: Maric 2.2 Sautner 1.5 Gileno 1.1. Lockwood 1.1 Zomer 1.1 Dean 1.0 Summers 0.1 Rushed 0.1

Best: I need to think about that

Certainly a fairly disappointing effort first up from the Zebras. They lost it in the middle of the ground where they could just not keep possession. Over-possessed the ball, fumbled easy opportunities and when they did decide the kick the thing, they did so very poorly... (Does any of this remind you of any other team???)

Maric looked OK at times but I have concerns over his height and his work ethic - which I thought at times were poor.

Martin was easily outdone in the ruck - had one appalling set shot on goal.

Didn't see too much of any of the others, but its often hard from my vantage point, concentrating on other things.

Fair points.

Maric looks to me a highly foot skilled baby, looks OK in space but in traffic is a little unprepared in his thinking, needs time to adjust to higher tempo & pressure. high school football probably slowing him down. I hope he's a hard worker.

Martin contested strongly @ the cntr bounces where he was the No1 ruck. He was constructive @ boundary throwins working hard for position & very determined, helped linkup through the corridor chased hard & tackled, very promising.

Dunn had a mild hitout playing on ball. OK. has built up a lot, to a mans body. Now needs to start playing more robustly & take the body whilst contesting.

Zomer is a tall rangy boy. not a big impact today.

Poyas now has hair! :D

Chaney & Mcnamara look OK but will need sometime to pickup the tempo & intensity.

All in all a good but quiet day @ beach rd where a very young zebras outfit took the field for their first hitout.

Is anyone else concerned that Martin was playing in the ruck, when he was recruited on the premise of being developed into a key tall back?

Looks like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing yet again.

I think playing him in the ruck and in the centre of the ground will help improve his stamina and his reading of the play.

That, and Sandy can play him wherever he is needed...

Also - in addition to my comments - Maric kicked a goal down my end from about 40 on the snap without even looking at the goals... Quite freakish goal sense.

It doesn't particularly - but Sandy are a club in their own right, and if they need Martin to ruck, they're going to make him ruck.

It is always going to be the problem with AFL clubs and VFL affiliates.

Assuming all our ruckmen stay fit, there's going to be two of Paul Johson, Jamar and Meesen at Sandy at any given time, plus whatever ruck stocks Sandy have (if any?). Martin rucked this weekend out of necessity. I'll be very surprised if he's required to do it at all during the year.

Out of necessity? It was a PRACTISE MATCH. Where is the necessity there?

We depserately need to win a premiership. One might say, out of necessity.

How the #$%* is playing him in the ruck going to help his development for when he plays CHB on Reiwolt, Fevola or Tredrea?

C'mon man!

It was a practise match.

Give some up and coming Sandy ruckman practise in the ruck and let Martin practise in the backilne.

Agree. What's more bewildering is that Meesen was played as a midfielder against the Dogs. If he was brought in as a developing ruckman, why not give him a full game in the ruck for Sandy? If Meesen is not a ruckman, why did we do the trade?

FTR though, Nasher is right, Bailey has played three/four of the rucks in the MFC side for the pre-season to work out who is going to partner White in Round 1.

I'd like to see Meeson given first crack at being the backup, but I think he'll be starting the year with Sandy alongside PJ, with Jamar in the MFC side.

Believe me, he wasn't recruited as a defender. He's a tall player who can play many roles for the team. Back, Forward, pinchhit in the ruck, pinchhit @ CH/F.

For the record, from a previous post, http://demonland.ugbox.net/forum/index.php...c=8591&st=0.

Bailey said the selection of Martin was all about grooming long-term future key position players for the club.

"Stefan fitted our needs more than Ashley did," Bailey told Sportal on Tuesday.

"He is a tall (198cm) key position player with an enormous leap."

Bailey said he believes Martin could develop into a future key position player at either end of the ground.

"He can play down back or go up forward," he said.

Bailey seems to think he can play in the Back line aswell as up forward i think he was an exelent choice...i think in the Future(when developed more) with his size, mobility and "enourmous" leap along with a good set of hands he could be a very hard forward to stop......

So let's develop him as a key tall rather than play him in the ruck.

Left hand / right hand?????

Are you following me yet?

And i hardly believe you!

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
