Allan Jackovich Segment

did anyone hear Mark Doran's segment on Allan Jackovich yesterday?

they reminissed on the short but eventful career of Allan Jackovich...

as i'm sure most people know, he was the fastest player to kick 50 league goals, in 9 games... however he didn't kick any in his first game, and only 1 in his second, so he kicked the remaining 49 in 7 matches... also for his debut season combining his tally in the reserves and the seniors he kicked 130 goals...

they tried getting his contact details of brother Glenn but he told them not to bother, he doesn't like doing interviews or anything anymore...

currently lives in Coffs Harbour, enjoying life according to Glenn... he still has problems with his chronic back, the back injury which ended his career... living in the warmer climate of coffs harbour makes it alot more managable...

they kept mentioning the extraordinary talent he had which was never completely fulfilled due to injury, keeping jacko to only 50 odd games... he's ranked 13th of all time for average goals per game...

could have been one of the greats...

Yeah i heard it too

was also equal quickest to 100 goals with coleman in 21 games

If i think back on him, schwartz, lyon, tingay all getting cut down, how good could we have been mid 90's....... it's depressing :(

Interesting interview about an interesting player.

Definite could have been....anything.

On his day....a one man excitement machine that would win the day..Only player I have seen similar is Jeff Farmer at his red hot best.

Off his day.....a disaster who lost focus and discipline.

His first two years were unbelievable. His last two years were up and down.

I thought Glen was a little bit cagey in discussing his brother. I did not get a strong sense of warmth between them and that they both do their own thing in separate parts of the world.

Aside from the rapidity of his goal kicking he did have days when he seem to kick a lot of points with his goals. His day out against North he kicked 11.7. Kicked the hard ones and missed some sitters. I recall a day at Western Oval he kicked about 4.8.

My favorite moment was against Collingwood when he kicked a great goal, pulled his guernsey over his head and then went flying around the forwrdline with his arms out stretched pissing Mick McGuane off no end. Another good time when he kicked a goal against Essendon from 50m on the boundary line at 1/2 time and then running hard to players race gestured confidently to the other players to follow me. Inspirational day. I think he kicked 8 out of a winning score of 13.

For a player who could kick both feet, I never saw Jakovich handball.

Its a pity he did not have his brothers dedication and application to succeeding. For all his ability he was an ordinary trainer, questionable fitness and dietary focus and poor rehabilitation record.

Fizzled out at Footscray in mysterious circumstances after less than one year.

Its a pity he did not focus on his game and become a 10 year footballer with MFC.

An enigma.

2 bulges on the one disc in his back glen said was why he retired early, also said that he was not the most dedicated to trainign and fitness but loved to play and would onyl kick on his left when playing against his brothers so he could be as good on his left as his right.

Since the advent of the internet, I have been waiting for an Allen Jakovich highlight video to pop up somewhere

When it happens, it will be the greatest day in the history of the world

Damn I missed this..

Put simply he was the most exciting player I've ever seen play in my lifetime.

Yes there have been better players, Flower, Lyon, Neitz etc but none that for sheer

excitment made you look forward to seeing a single player play. Jeff Farmer came close,

but alas he's now a Docker and the magic is less frequent and just not the same...

He used to get pelted with stones at Victoria Park, where he'd be systematically tearing Collingwood

apart, he recounted this to someone I know who spoke to him at training during his playing days.

His goals in the Reserves, back in the day when you saw the reserves before the seniors, were amazing,

and thus he could no longer be ignored for the seniors in his first year (reminds you of anyone on our list

currently?). He started off in the seniors as if he'd been there for years, and continually wound up with 12-15

shots at goal per game. Truly breathtaking to watch.

His post-career activities are as equally steeped in intrigue as his playing days, here's hoping at some stage

he resurfaces and regales about such days as that at the G where he tore the Kangas apart...

Absolutely.

My favourite moment would have to have been when we were playing WCE and he kissed his brother.

A total excitement machine.

Went head to head with Ablett one day @ the G. They both kicked plenty.

11 odd goals playing on Micky Martyn.

8 Goals in an Elimination final Versus The Bombers @ VFL Park

7 or 8 against The Pies @ Vic Park

You can see some of his best work on the video Demons season 1994

Arrrr The Memories & so short lived.

My all time favorite player, what a waste

And we won that game too., in 93. They were three goals up at 3/4 time. We kicked six, then they came back, and we finished them off. MM was rope-able after the game, God bless his gentle soul.

Does anybody else remember that goal he kicked against Hawthorn in the last round of 92(?). He marked the ball on the boundary line 50 metres out. And rather than running around the guy on the mark to have a shot at goal with less of an angle, he sprinted past him via the boundary line, reducing what little he could see between the goalposts, and slotted it through.

Surely someone else can remember this????

it was a goal that has stayed with me all my life, and I was at the North game in 91.

Biffinator.

You beat me to it

It was a very wet day as well, and I think Langford got a hand on Jaka and yanked his jumper but he broke free and put it through

I have always remembered that goal also

Put simply, the man was a freak.

I remember Round 1 of 1994 as one of my fondest Melbourne memories growing up... watching Sean Wight tear Ablett a new one and Jako kicking 8.8 in a 60 point victory. Had the guy been able to kick straight he would have kicked bags of 15 or 16, he was simply that good.

Players like Jako are a rare specimen, it's hard to see another like him in today's game.

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
