This is what I get for cut and pasting from the AFLW website! I shouldn't have trusted them to have it up to date...the day before the event. Sigh!

I don’t care who wins Mark of the Year, Tay took it on Saturday. 😜

Kate, Tyla and Maevo made AA.

The blazers DO NOT match the dresses.

Kate got AA vice captain. Garner got captain

I'm guessing Gillard missed out due to missing the start of the year? Whoever got a defender position instead of her must be amazing.

Ziporah Fish, Rising Star. No surprise

Love the recognition for Maevo, Hanksy and Kate. Deserved nominees and Kate as VC.

They were stars for Dees this year having outstanding seasons. 🌟🌟🌟

But flabbergasted that the AA selectors chose Brisbane Irish import Liv Dunne. Meggs is confounded they could even consider her, there are numerous alternative better defenders.

Have never rated Dunne who averages less than 10 disposals a game.

Meggs does not understand the love.

But very happy for someone to jump on and explain.

Hosking with Mark of the Year, well deserved.

The AA team. I see you back there, Tyla! 🤣

Also credit to whichever player is the first to wear a black (navy?) outfit with green trim, presumptuously, to match the AA jacket.

Hanksy’s in the lead!

Tyla’s third place is a huge achievement when you consider she plays in the same team as Kate.

Final leaderboard:

Riddell 23

G.Prespakis 20

Hanks 18

Roberts 17

Gardiner 15

Garner 15

Bowers 13

Nanscawen 13

M.Scholz 12

Congrats to Riddell, honestly could have polled higher.

Biggest congrats to Tyla, who did some hard yards this year! Funnily enough, she's a better player with Liv in there too but would get fewer votes as a result - and wouldn't mind a bit I'm sure.

Zanker 6

Chaplin 3

Tyla Hanks ❤️💙❤️💙❤️💙

Tyla had a sensational year and her 3rd place cements her as one of the best in the league. She’s a star

She should win it purely for her name

The umpires clearly confused Purcell and Pisano in Round 1. Absolutely farcical.

Are you saying you didn't rate Pisano's eight disposal, two behind game? Only the 34 touches, 8 tackles, 8 clearances and a goal for Purcell.

Look, I know umpires can't look at the stats but 50% of her disposals hit a target so maybe I'm being a bit harsh and they can tell the difference between two players whose surname starts with the same letters and are one number apart.

There was a similar fiasco in 2018 when Emma Humphries got three votes for this game, and she was also jumper #3 so maybe it's a slow-burning number-related conspiracy.

I was wondering if this could have beeen an admin error rather than umpiring incompetence. I say that because none of the votes in Round 1 make sense. The Dogs' ruck was one of the few winners on the day and Pearce (2 votes) had fewer hitouts than Georgia Campbell. Chaplin (3 votes) didn't have a particularly noteworthy game. None of these players got coaches' votes.

I don't think umpire votes should match media, coaches or a general consensus, but those three players all seem very odd.

The problem with the above theory, though, is the only error I can imagine is swapping one game for another, and I can't think of one that's an obvious exchange. The best game Pisano played was Round 6 against West Coast. Zanker kicked 5. Zanker got 3 votes for that game.

Bizarre.

Given the standard of umpiring in the AFLW, it would be highly optimistic to expect their vote giving to be any more fathomable than their on ground decision making.

For mine, umpiring is the number one issue the AFLW has to address.

Despite the best efforts of the players and coaches, the umpiring is too often turning games into a farce

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
