What happened to the idea about having a bye week just before the GF?

Certainly would give the two contenders an opportunity to freshen up as well as address concussion protocol timelines.

Sorry, forgot there is no money to made that weekend by the AFL. Scratch that idea

rubbish, theres a heap of money to be made that weekend if the afl were smart.

for a start youve got 16 soon 17 teams of players doing nothing. you could have 3 or 4 games of state of origin that weekend.
you could have the VFL grand final.

if you wanted to rearrange the womens season you could have the womens grand final that weekend (and i think they should do this)

all of these make more sense than 7v10 ffs

It's a new world where everyone wins a prize. I'm thinking a final 16 and two 'most determined clubs' awards might be the ticket.

In NFL the wild card makes good sense as it rewards the highest third place getter across the various conferences who in some cases may have won more games than a second placed team in another conference who automatically qualifies.

Basketball seems to love multiple games as does baseball so why not another round. I wonder if we'll ever see baseball played in the snow given they finish their season so late.

The season is now around four weeks too long but what do I know

The only adjustment I’d make to this is that I wouldn’t consider the wild card games part of the finals series.

I’d call them “finals qualifiers” to get into the final 8. I think that would be easier to stomach for those who are dead against this.

If the wild card came in at the end of 2024, I think we as MFC supporters would have been a bit more enthusiastic about this as most us were expecting an 8th-11th kind of 2025 season. Next year I’d say the majority of us have us around 13th-15th at best and thus the wild card is a bridge too far for us.

It doesn't matter what you call it, a wildcard game is the exact same as an elimination final

Halfway into the last season, the top 8 was effectively settled and there was absolutely nothing to play for.

For this reason alone, I am interested to see how this goes.

The Dogs could have made the 8 in the last game of the season

I think it makes the season more interesting. There are a lot of dead rubber games at the end of the year.

Now we'll have dead rubber 'finals'

Teams that have to win 5 games in 5 weeks against teams with 1 or 2 weeks off (virtually impossible)

Maybe they can give a trophy to the best team outside the top 6?

The Bulldog's flag from 2016 can never again happen with this new system

All about the $$$ that's all it is. Dress it up any way you like AFL, they make more $$$ this way and really that's why they do it.

It's now harder to not make the finals than to miss them.

Are you saying bottom 8 is the new top 8?

I hate the idea anyway, but calling them 'Wildcard' games is toe-curlingly cringeworthy.

Can't wait for AFL stooge journalists to remind me what a fantastic concept this is when it brings 'meaning' to a Round 20 Port vs Richmond game that I wouldn't give a rats about under any circumstances.

Agree it is cringe

Maybe mediocrity round?

Or you know - 'Week 1 Finals' works too

My son has dragged me reluctantly into the NBA as he loves it so much as it what we talk about it most

This idea is 100% from the NBA

They have 'play-ins' for team 7-10 (teams 1-6 make play offs)

It's all about money.

It's everywhere.

UCL now 8 league games as compared to 6 group stage. And additional knockout stage.

NFL highly probable to have one more regular season game. Expanded wild card round.

NBA the same with play-in.

It's all about those TV rights deals.

FIFA World Cup also due to expand to 48 countries soon as well. I remember when there were only 16 countries. Of course Scotland will miss out by finishing 49th in the qualifying rounds.

Doesn’t sound very wildcardy to me. It’s just a new round of finals which is what it always was.

The optics on this would have looked slightly better if they had announced that they were REDUCING the finals to 6 automatic qualifying spots and that teams finishing 7-10 would play off to make up 2 additional spots. Additionally, these two games would NOT be considered as finals.

Post Season Play Off Rounds

i suspect it will be the bupa insurance knockout finals or something akin to that by the time it actually happens...

The PS POR stage? Or is that acronym too close to sounding like something else?

Can Someone please check me if I'm all correct on this because I'm a little shell shocked.. Tx.

But Just wow.

This is one of the biggest shake ups to the comp almost chasing going Australian wide.

An overstatement ....but it's big news.

Now while we ( The grand old MFC) have been struggling to make the mix ,I guess for purely selfish reasons I think I'm for it.

Especially since at times we went up to Brissie and bumped of the premiers and also gave the scum a hell of a fight kings round (and lost solely by the worst display from the maggots ahmm sorry... professional umpires, I've ever seen).

It gives bottom club supporters hope and it's clever marketing and more ruppees for the money machine that is the AFL

And they are bottom clubs because now if I'm reading this correctly effectively we have a top final 10 out of at present 18 clubs.

It's not boring that's for sure.

But the first clubs to finish the h and a at 7 and 8 ( hopefully not by a big point margins to the two below) that lose out will leave a hugely empty fan feeling despite the huge filling of AFL coffers.

It had better not be us. But as old the syndrome that lurks in the dark recesses my footy mind, that no medication or therapy can resolve, I fear it will be. And most likely by the pies with more superb umpiring from those talented champions of the comp. Call me paranoid or a deeply passionate Dee's supporter.

So is this a total extra round of two games to determine the final eight?

And do the final 7 and 8 determined by this go straight in against teams that have had a week off..............

BECAUSE THEREIN LIES THE RUB

It makes is just so much more difficult for the bottom two final finalists via fatigue, travel, injury , suspension and other elements. It dramatically changed the finals landscape.

Also imagine a scenario of a club finishing seventh by % only to three clubs with the same wins, above it to, be beaten on a bad day by the ninth team that finished with a possible six or seven losses more.

Yikes.

I'm not convinced it the slightest fairness or rewards in this shake up, in any fashion.

And while it may add hope and excitement it's hard not to see the negatives and be cynical about what makes the football world go around in this day and age.

I know player gets compensated incredibly well but they pay a rather hefty tax post foortyw via injury. The season is long enough.

There is more strain on players each passing year with travel ...five day breaks...media scrutiny....head clashes and more.

Perhaps the finals should be overhauled if we introduced two new teams but at present I feel it works just fine.

It's not perfect as it currently stands but it will be much less so with this.

Just my two billion two cents worth.

Can someone please clue me in as to my understanding of the changes.

After the wildcard round and the final eight is finally resolved... Is it back the the usual system?

What and in incentive e to make the top six.

And while we used to bemoan how hard it was for a club to win a flag from 7 or 8....it seemed the McIntyre plan changed this and made it slightly easier.

But now it will head in the other direction so on balance I think I have to say just NO.

Can someone please do a poll. I tried but had trouble. I'm really keen for some commonsense consensus.

But I've probably come to the wrong place brother...I mean sister. ..I mean all of us.

Many thanks.

The opening round, Gather Round and now the Wildcard round seem so far to have been given to the TV companies for nothing.

Next step is to monetise those games. Opening Round in Perth or Brisbane is an easy one if the WA or Qld governments are crazy enough to pay what SA does for Gather Round. If like Gather Round the participating clubs got $1M you'd see clubs queuing up to play in the round.

Andrew Dillon is completely out of his depth. I’m pretty neutral about a wildcard round but that is just idiotic.

He is the most mediocre AFL executive in memory. His decision-making, the way he communicates. It is remarkable they thought he was up to the job. Laura Kane has copped a lot of heat for things that he is ultimately responsible for.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
