May not be of the liking to some/most but Marc got a great scoop on the Cameron Nairn potential pick and unless there’s a significant slider, he’ll be a Dee on night 1. There was a home visit to him recently.

The versatility of playing forward, on a wing and inside is a big reason why he’s shot up. (In Melbournes eyes anyway)

Great insight mate, any idea on our second pick??

Nairn’s been one of my favourites. As I said in an other thread. Who has 16 marks in a game, even if it’s sanfl colts?

My main comparison for him as a half forward is Tom Lynch (Adel). High endurance, really smart on the lead, beautiful clean hands and a super quick decision maker including kicking inside 50.

The difference to Lynch is he played 2 excellent games on the wing at the end of the SANFL colts season and racked the ball up for fun. (I was so intrigued by him I watched these 2 games on the sanfl website). He looked every bit the natural wingman. A little taller and left footed but kind of plays the way Sidebottom does by constant movement to dangerous spots.

Can he play on ball? I haven’t seen contested ball from him. But I have seen super clean hands around the pack from the wing.

Downsides: not overly quick, not key tall size, doesn’t jump up in packs, doesn’t provide much pressure or tackling at ground level.

A fairly one paced linking player with a top 10(ish) pick. Seems a risk. But a JT risk is often worth taking.

Cameron Nairn is a quality young player. 188cms. Yes he’s like Ollie Dempsey or a little like Jai Culley, or throw in a little Bailey Fritsch (but not as smoothe). Medium forward? Actually he plays more wing/half forward, or can shift to half back. He’s a smart player too. Left footer. Not highly skilled but good enough. His big assets are his running power and his marking. Kicking is not elite but satisfactory to be honest. I had him pegged in about pick 30 so it’ll be a big move to have him at our “11/12”. Again it’s all in JTs capable hands.

Twomey has Nairn at 24 in his October guide. Pickett was not even mentioned in his year.

Apologies - you’re correct on Pickett

Reading that he has scope for wing or even midfield minutes makes this a more exciting pick for me (if it does happen) but geez what a jump it would be compared to what the media is reporting at the moment

It suits the style of game that King sounds like he's implementing. A good sized medium forward who is an excellent runner but really is a utility wing/flank. It gives a lot of options as a connector in a fast paced game style.

In those Championship videos he's so often got a big gap on his opponent. It's impressive. Then he gets you in the air when you close up his space. AND he hits targets by foot! Exciting.

A lot of the video highlights of the touted top ten don't really do it for me. Nairn's looked good, although I'm sure you have to take into account SA's overall dominance, and many other factors my dimwit football mind doesn't even consider.

Do you think we will try and trade back a few spots and take him or use 8?

Surely part of it is all smoke and mirrors to get other clubs to second guess who they are going to pick?

If you were keen on ‘x’ player you wouldn’t leak anything about him, yet you’d pump up the tyres of another player you wouldn’t think twice about picking.

I'd love to have seen his SANFL U18 games where he played high possession games up the ground, particularly more around the ball. I think that would probably be the vision that would determine if you'd use a high pick on him.

You can watch them on the sanfl play website with a free trial. They’re very good. He just keeps racking the ball up especially in space. He uses it quickly and accurately. Sometimes he mucks up kicks but when he doesn’t it’s on the money and not bombing it.

The standard of footy is not great. You might be able to message the bloke who does YouTube cut ups to do one of them.

There's definitely a bit to like. He is a nice mark, has courage in the air (you either do or don't), and seems smart around the contest.

His kicking looks bog ordinary to me with a high ball drop and a propensity to get too close to the man on the mark. But, the usual caveat, I haven't seen enough.

Adelaide/St Kilda/Melbourne targeting Carlton's pick 11 as per the internet

Adelaide keen on Farrow

Thing with Nairn is, if no one else is targeting him in the top 15ish, why wouldn’t you just try to trade into the draft with Gold Coast’s future 1? The Herald Sun also had us taking Nairn, but with pick 34 (37 being moved up a few slots due to bids). I know JT has a good eye for a bolter but this seems like quite a long bow that could easily leave egg on our face

Anyone thinks there is a world where we could take both Dovaston and Pickett with our first two picks..

A lot of his highlight stuff is breaking tackles using the lifting arm technique. Won't work at AFL level.

The kicking mekaniks look funky but he certainly hits targets, at least in the vision I've seen

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
