the death ride mobile is stalled at the starting line

the silver lining is the cats are getting pants. which is always enjoyable

I don’t want to be rude or be come across as hyperbolic but @adonski , you’re a bad person for starting this thread and you should feel a deep sense of shame this entire year.

I'm taking your feedback on board BoBo!

Pick 17 or 18 coming our way (yippee)

They will be thereabouts if they listen to Hardwick intently. Petracca is already making a big difference

Cats are cactus by the looks of it

Pick 18 (25ish after academy/FS etc etc)

Yeah Gonzo, I thought we might have traded the pick to get another 1st rounder for the 2025 Draft

But, apparently, next year's draft has a deeper talent pool than the 2025 draft

But at pick 25 or so, there's a good dose of luck attached in unearthing a top player. But you never know (Stevie J was pick 24) 😃

Ah ok so they included some other random stats to create an artificial pecking order that suits their narrative

Yep! I can understand how a triple double became a thing in basketball and I can understand why a century or half century became milestones in cricket. But 130 Brownlow votes never became a particular milestone

I would be very happy if we land both pick 17 and 18.

If you see someone six feet tall standing beside someone seven feet the shorter person actually can seem to be short. Similarly it may be more that Gee long were hopeless. It's opening round. There's s more than six months until the grand final. Anyone who's backd Suns or Petracca to do well this year has every reason to be excited but I've seen so many false dawns. Surely we have not forgotten how Melbourne looked good early in 2024 and ended up 14th. And Brisbane did not look like the best side early the last two years. And we won our first 10 in 2022 and didn't even win a final. It's like our horse is last with 1000 m to go in the Melbourne cup. All I know is do not rip up your ticket yet.

It’s a good accolade - never disputing that - but it’s a strange combination of stats is all I’m saying. Like they are trying to manufacture the topm3 in the order that works for the narrative they are looking for.

If triple double is the thing then clearances , disposals and tackles is a better combo IMO. Brownlow votes are a tarnished , interpreted stat.

Ha ha!

Swans & Suns will take some beating but the Blues & Cats aren't much chop

We might make a run from 9th or 10th

1988 is best remembered for the heavy GF loss but I remember that year for the run we went on from round 22 onwards (we had to beat 2nd placed Carlton just to make the finals and then won 3 finals from 5th spot to make the GF)

We weren't a great team but we still made the GF

I'm agreeing with you. I still think brownlows have plenty of significance. But of course the Moneyball story helped remind people that stats can be misleading.

Cats will probably play finals but they're not a threat for the flag (they've got 10 home games at Kardinia Park)

The 2 Queensland teams have talent to burn as do Sydney. Absolute midfield dominance and their mids kick goals

How are clubs like us supposed to compete? Academy/father sons taking over the comp. If you don’t nail your first rounders, you won’t keep up, few on our list already …

We're lucky we've got Jason Taylor

Even if he just drafts enough talent for us to stay relevant (as a minimum)

But ultimately, you need lots of Stars to win big

2021 we had 5 AA's and another 4 or 5 who went close to AA honours

The perfect storm and most here watched the GF at home

Check out the "From the vault" thread Macca, I've uploaded all those games from 1988 to YouTube and linked then there

Laurie Tholstrup Jefferson all first rounders past five years, you’d be really hoping one of them can turn a corner

New coach and a new start for the list

My reckoning is that all the players will get their opportunities and we could easily see some talent emerge

With the 3 players you mentioned, they all need to get a step ahead instead of a step behind. If that doesn't happen, they won't make it

It's such a fast game these days and the players need lighting quick skills

For whatever reason, I still vividly remember Lindsay's first disposal last season. Gained possession and then hit a target 25-30 metres away without blinking. A great sign

But the talent up North is going to be hard to match

Think the ticket prices for the death ride dropped a bit this week in a flash sale...

This death ride will hinge on how good we are this year. We traded out our second round pick as part of the deal to get their first. If we finish bottom and they finish top we have jumped up one spot.

Fingers crossed they somehow capitulate.

So hard to say... Maybe Geelong will buck the trend but sides that get thrashed in the Grand final tend to have enough year the following.

IGNORE

@Demonland I want to scream out every rude word I know. So often something weird happens and I'm stuck with stuff I started or didn't want to keep and then it's not easy to just delete it in one fellsweep. Even if I close a post and try and start a fresh I get this rubbish almost like a virus with a cold sore meaning they keep returning. Please tell me how to fix all these right now - it's making commenting on here infuriating. And often I have to click about six times to get into notifications and get them loading and I'm not using an ancient piece of technology here. And other times I cannot click on reactions , or if I do it only lets me click the "like " one and then sends me to the top of the page. I don't remember this annoying stuff before the reset a few months back.

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
