Having flashbacks to Brett Grgic now.

and Brent as well

The kids is exactly what we’ll need off half back. I’d say prioritise him over Robey 100%. The game is now speed and skill.

The brute force element will continue to get more phased out as an athletic more skilful orientated game style takes over.

This makes me wonder if they would be open to splitting 3. They've got big bodied Smillie and Lalor to go with Taranto and Hopper. They get their outside mid in Grlj to go with Hotton. Would it make sense for them to grab some more pieces around the park in their rebuild like a Lindsay at HBF etc

think tigers will either like cdt if eagles go duurs robey OR xavier taylor to replace broad/vlastuin and pair with gibcus and trainor long term, but i think grjl is the lock for them coz they really liked what he did when he repped them in the vfl

Are we sure this isn’t overplayed? Langford played well for Richmond vfl last year but they took Lalor at 1 and were strongly linked to Smillie. Sinnema played a nice for Casey and there’s not even any indication he’ll be even rookied by us.

A recruited might not put much stake in to a vfl coach being pleased with a young kid doing well

I think the link has been accepted because it’s come from Cal Twomey, who has stated that Richmond could have interest because of his VFL appearances (and that he could be a complimentary type for their midfield)

But there hasn’t been anything definitive yet

u might be right, and fwiw i agree re sinnema but i also think he is the best profile for them too, robey or sharp are too similar to lalor and smilie which is the other reason i do think he is in their market

Scouting Notes 30/10/2025

"A speedster who can break the lines with his run, Grlj can impact off halfback or through the midfield.

Club Oakleigh Chargers / Old Camberwell Grammarians

State VIC

Height 182cm

DOB 26/07/2007

Speed / Power / Endurance / Run & Carry

A player with excellent speed, power, endurance and a nice step, Grlj has some real AFL traits. He was solid during the under-18 national championships with Vic Metro, without having a breakout game. Grlj spent some time in the midfield but was mostly used across halfback, where he showed he could be an accountable defender and was able to break the lines with his run. The final match of the tournament against Vic Country was Grlj’s best as he gathered 17 disposals, including 12 kicks at 83.3 per cent efficiency. He also showed some clearance-winning ability through the midfield with the Chargers across the year, after being behind the likes of Jagga Smith, Finn O’Sullivan and Tom Gross in the pecking order during his bottom-age season in 2024. Grlj has drawn some comparisons to Geelong’s Max Holmes, particularly given his running power. He made an impressive VFL debut for Richmond in round 19, showing composure and providing some run off halfback as he gathered 18 disposals, six marks and five tackles. That was the first of two strong VFL appearances before Grlj returned to Oakleigh to see out the season. Grlj put his elite running abilities on show during the national draft combine in October, finishing second in the 2km time trial in 5 min 59 sec and placing ninth in the 20m sprint with a time of 2.926 sec.

2025 Coates League 108 ranking points, 20.3 disposals, 2.7 marks, 3.9 clearances, 2.9 inside 50s, 5 tackles, 5 score involvements, 0.7 goals, 0.7 score assists (7 games)

2025 VFL 96 ranking points, 16.5 disposals, 4 marks, 4 intercept possessions, 5 rebound 50s, 4 tackles, 3 score involvements (2 games)

2025 National Champs 73 ranking points, 17 disposals, 2.5 marks, 1.5 rebound 50s, 3 score involvements, 0.3 goals, 1.8 tackles (4 games)."

I think if the Tigers don’t take him he’s a good chance to fall to our pick

Purely speculation (based on phantom drafts and my own vibe) but I think the Dons would be more likely to take Sharp and Cumming over him (and they would definitely take Robey or Taylor if they’re available)

I hope you're right mate.

Fast forward 3 years time and a midfield of Kozzy, Windsor, Grlj, Lindsay and Langford is box office IMO.

That's your midfield core you build around.

I think if we get Grlj and Dovaston this year, our list build is at the point where we can start targeting FAs. And with two first rounders next year, we have some trade capital to satisfy a Butters or Humphrey deal.

I know I'm jumping ahead early, but I'd be targeting Humphrey over Butters as aside from Rivers (and Kolt?) we lack that explosive power player that Humphrey can be. Not to mention we're far more likely to land Humphrey than Butters.

100%

Grij is definitely at the top of my list for mids that might be there at 7 and I’d hope we take Dovaston with one of our picks

I also think that Butters coming out of contract next year could help us in the Humphrey sweepstakes, as most Vic clubs would be more likely to chase Butters, potentially giving us a clear run at Humphrey with our two firsts

A lot of water to go under the bride there though!

I’d much rather a player who tries too much than one who doesn’t try enough and it often works for Butters but is anyone concerned his cuts and steps won’t work nearly as well at afl level? Especially when he goes back in to traffic?

Good talent, lots of ticks including the way he tackles and that he kicks goals. Just looks a little bit like he’s running around in the under 10’s at times.

If he backs himself to play a certain way now as he grows and benefits from multiple AFL preseasons there’s no reason to think he won’t. Moves well but more importantly looks to kick to a team mates advantage. Took a nice mark going back with the flight of the ball. I thought he used his left once or twice early in the clip but I may have that wrong, need to rewatch it.

you'd prefer a player who showed worse evasive traits and didnt make a lower standard than the one their going into look easy?

i think both are positives, he has a genuine point of difference and itll get neatened up there will be a time to do it and a time to not, and he'll probably get caught once or twice early on whilst he adapts but if he just moved at teh same pace all game we would be moaning about that instead that he is too vanilla and is just another woey jack of all master of none

My concern is there’s seekingly plenty of times where he could just give a first option or go more direct.

And if the only way he knows is to take everyone on he might end up getting in trouble a lot more than once or twice a game.

I understand it’s nitpicking.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
