Cause his footy is definitely not 3rd round pick material for the next 5 years.

It's an extremely limited market and there's interest from only one party (GWS)

No other club wants to touch him and GWS and the MFC know that. There's no bidding war

The 3rd round pick is tokenism, as it's all about the money

As previously stated, we'd have our limit and GWS will have their limit in terms of who pays what

I can see a deal falling through as the cooling off period could be kicking in (for GWS) Buyer Beware and all that

If he arrives back, we'll take him in as we've no choice. Contracts are Contracts

He blew his career up. We supported him through everything despite everything

It's simple. Be professional and do what you are paid a truck load to do.

We can continue to 'put the effort in' and finish in the bottom 6 but King and others know when it's time to move on and cut your losses

wtf are you talking about?

I was answering peopleโ€™s meltdowns about the value of the trade

WE chose to part ways with him in such a ridiculous way this year, so WE have to bare the cost of that

Last year we could have got a far better deal, but we didnโ€™t.

This year we could have approached the trade in a far more pragmatic and diplomatic manner and tried to at least get 50 cents back

WE decided to push Clarry out against his wishes

It doesnโ€™t matter if you agree or not, it doesnโ€™t matter if you want him gone or not, but you can absolutely want to be professional to at least get better value in a trade

We had two opportunities for two years running to trade him for more. We chose not to. He wanted to stay. We forced the issue, let it leak, watch him meltdown, made it publicly known we will pay part of his wage and made it sound like heโ€™s a VFL level player.

So donโ€™t cry when the return is a packet of used condoms

The same way in which the leak about us pushing May out has gone down like sour milk and we will have to keep him for another 12 months

When you are telling a player to go away, you canโ€™t ask for a good return when he does

GWS is basically waiting for us to blink. The whole nonsense around not having cap space basically is designed to make us sweat. If the reports on DeGoey to GWS are true, id pick up the phone to Collingwood and say well take DeGoey pick (15) and give you Oliver and take a 40-50% of his salary. Id say Oliver is probably in better physical condition and is younger than JDG so theyd effectively get a more fit player at about 60% of the price.

Let's instead wait for Oliver to blink and take a substantial pay-cut so we are only playing a token $100k p.a. And a future 2nd rounder please. He wouldn't have the self-control to come back after metaphoring in our faces.

We chose to blow the relationship up, despite Clarry being invested and wanting to stay

We did this

When you not only blow things up, but also let such a blow up leak, you have no leg to stand on

GWS are happy to put in the effort we obviously no longer want to put in, while we pay for it

How to lose a trade 101

I think we did it for reasons. It's clear to me that he's recently broken the last straw. There's got to be a line and he's crossed it.

We needed to "blow it up" because that was the only way to move him.

As others have posted, there's not a queue of clubs out bidding GWS' modest offer - why would that be?

I hope he prospers at GWS and in life generally. I'll be very fine with that and cheer him on like Jesse and Toby, except against us.

Don't buy this arguement at all, watch as he has a stellar season next year and the acolytes to this destruction including Demonlanders who want him gone, start Bleating the loudest. An absolute farce and disgrace! The bottom line is he wanted to stay, and then was shattered to find the new coach unwilling.. a disgrace

So he went from the best player in the league to an average onballer just t show us up at GWS?

He is playing the long game

It really sad, but the clearance beast we knew is gone

Again, not the point of my post

The point of my post is that you canโ€™t complain about the trade value of a trade youโ€™re pushing in such an aggressive manner

Forgot people have no deduction skills

Edit: it also doesnโ€™t matter if we did it for a reason or not. The outcome remains the same. You publicly tell a player to leave or play VFL, and you end up getting VFL level return

I'd walk away from the deal and then he stays. End of story.

Bridges can be mended, get em all in room a sort it out.

Tell GWS to talk a long walk off a short pier.

But even if we said that we value him and weโ€™ll only trade him for a great price, we would be lying and everyone would know.

Nobody was knocking the door down to get him and we wanted him gone. The price weโ€™re going to get is reflective of his lack of value as a club employee/player and his very large contract. We could have said anything โ€ฆ theyโ€™re just words.

6 minutes ago, Very Jaded said:

No-one from the club said that, in fact, quite the reverse. If anyone blew this up it was Clayton himself - that interview from the moving van would have done nothing to enhance his value.

But in any case, unless I'm misunderstanding, the premise of what you're saying is that we could have somehow hidden that we wanted him gone. In reality, all clubs know everything about what's going on internally at other clubs, and if they don't, the player managers make sure they do.

On Clayton Oliver

"We met with Clayton and spoke about the future, how that looked, how the coach wanted the midfield to play and where Clayton fitted in with all of that,โ€ Lamb said.

โ€œOut of that has come that he wanted to explore some options, but it wasn't a direction from us to do that."

If Clarry's really worth so much more and we're getting burned on the trade, why is no-one offering more than GWS? Clubs should have been queuing up to get Clarry on the cheap, why did the Crows not pursue a player who would easily fill their biggest need? Or why didn't the Pies try harder?

I'll always be grateful to Clarry for our recent success and he was one of the best I've ever seen in red and blue. I sincerely wish the best for his personal happiness and wellbeing above all and hope he figures things out once more and becomes a star again at GWS, and it hurts that he doesn't end up a one club player and MFC legend (actually, I think he's rightfully still an MFC legend).

It's also clear that he's been extremely problematic in recent years, both from whispers and general AFL perception, as well as arguably having lost a step on the field. That's reflected in his current trade value and our having to pay a heap of salary to get rid of him. Whatever mistakes were made in the past by not trading him last year are spilt milk under the bridge; I believe it's in the both the current new administrations' best interest and Clarry's to part ways here. I don't think this would have played out differently regardless of how it was handled. Clarry most likely won't be part of our next flag push, and the way he is right now in Melbourne, I would say not the kind of person we want around a rebuilding club. Again, I think we should provide all the help he needs and hope he gets it, but as a professional organisation we can't be beholden to his antics anymore.

Obviously there's a lot of info we're not really privy to on the sidelines, but though this is sad I think it's for the best and just reality, not a reflection on Lamb's trading ability or the current admin's poor management. All the best Claz, loved seeing you in red and blue and hope you get back to your best ๐Ÿซก

They're not offering more because we've publicly stated he will be playing VFL. No one else is prepared to take on 800k in their cap for a player that can't break into a side that finished 14th. We publicly diminished his value and are now going to actually get way below what he is actually worth. Behaviour aside, he is still worth a late first round pick at absolute worst. GWS is laughing at us.

So what does that tell you?

It tells you that we showed our entire hand to the poker table and still went all in despite having a 72 off, expecting others at the table to tap out.

Every club knows what Clarry has been up to and what his problems are. It's no big secret

And they could see with their own eyes how he was performing on the oval.

Do you really think we could have pulled the wool over everyone's through some stage managed exit

If it was just a case of a falling out between Clarry and club that we should have managed better, why aren't all 17 clubs lined up to take advantage

Our stuff up was not trading him last year

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
