The Bailey Humphrey Thread

Walking out of the ground on the weekend I was stopped by a Gold Coast supporter who straight out declared that Humphrey will be at the Dees in 2027. When I asked why it was all due to the $$$ we are offering.

Most GC 'supporters' that attend games in Melbourne would be family & friends of their players so maybe there's something in what you were told inanunda.

In terms of targets, as nice as a King, Butters, Humphrey, Bailey etc would be, other than Jeremy Cameron, I can't think of too many big signings that have worked out in terms of getting a premiership. I think often it disrupts the salary cap and maybe the locker room as you have to pay overs to get someone to come to you. Obviously easier said than done, but I think better bringing in players that fit your needs (we did this pretty well last year) rather than the biggest names in the trade period Eg Pies before their flag got Hill, Frampton, Mitchell, McStay - the first 3 played a big role in their GF, Hawthorn bringing in Barrass and Battle, Brisbane bringing in Dunkley at end of 2022.

I kind of get where you're coming from DFA but I'd like to think the locker room should be just thankful that the club is bringing in the best players to maximise the players likelihood of success. Not sure it would dirsupt too much unless the said player comes in and acts like a smug peanut.

We always need to bringing in high end talent to improve our list. People may look back at some Grand Finals and think the big recruits might not have fired on the day but forget the lead up for a couple big name forwards.

  • 2019 the Tiges got Tom Lynch after losing the 2018 Prelim. In the 2019 Prelim, Tom stars with a BOG and 5 goals where Jack Riewoldt couldn't catch a cold. They win the flag where Lynch is quieter (from what I remember) but they don't get this flag without him

  • 2024 Joe Daniher was I think best on in a Semi or Prelim vs GWS in a game decided by less than a kick slotting a couple impossible shots late in the game.

I'm a big fan of Walter. Reminds me a lot of Charlie Churnow in how he attacks in the air. This could be the last year we get him relatively cheaply as he's about to hit a peak age.

I'd still rather Humphrey however as goal kicking mids who are good in the air should be everyones #1 target.

Who could blame them?

Ummm, may not be fashionable to be saying this right now, but bringing in Steve May was a huge factor in our 2021 premiership.

He was definitely a huge factor in our premiership - although I don't think May when leaving the Gold Coast was in the Butters / Humphrey / King level. He was a club captain, sure - but for the worst team in the league. No All Australians, known to be undisciplined (got reported a lot) and wasn't seen as a player who is or could be a top 5-10 player in the league. I think the level he played at 2020-2024ish was much higher than most would have thought he was capable of playing at on a consistent basis.

yah, not sure i agree here - he was regarded as one of the best emerging tall defenders in the competition and was thought to be likely to be a big time player no matter where he went

we were super lucky to land him

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
