Well they’ve got to play practice matches if they weren’t playing. Last time I checked you can get injured in a practice match. It’s just part of footy, you could get injured first minute of round 1

No

It's about odds. In the practice match you have say a 10/1 chance that if an injury occurs it will happen to a top line player. In this game it's a certainty

Not much to report as far as Demon representatives are concerned.

Kozzy had a couple of nice early touches but otherwise quiet.

I get what you’re trying to say, but I just disagree that they should not do this due to potential injuries. This is good for the game.

Let’s keep it that way. Quiet is good.

Riv is not a great kick. Not sure he is our midfield star of the future

Was he ever expected to be? He is good but a level below the a graders

I heard this morning that Tom Green is out with an ACL from their practice match.

FWIW I thought it was just an errant elbow from Georgiades that might have got him in the jaw. He does get landed on a lot though. Something in the way he body spoils to put the forward off balance under the ball.

Pretty much, look at the injuries this in the intra games this week.

The difference is that in a practice match players are playing with their teammates to practice team tactics etc. Whereas that can't happen tonight. So the loss of a player tonight results from a risk with no value for the team unlike the same risk in a practice game.

Well yeah Tom Green did an acl at an intra club match. It happens, which is why it’s no reason to not play origin games

Exactly. I like the idea of it being a preseason game as well. It was always a problem in the middle of the season.

Not true. I gave a reason in an earlier post. You may think it is not a great reason, but ...

Rivers getting into the game...just not the same skills levels as those around him, shows up in this type of game.

Sadly yeah, most of his disposals have been poor

You could look at it that way. The teams should really have everything buttoned down by now – and your best players will always learn more playing with and against the other best players of the competition.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
