The decision to sign May to an $800k extra year at the start of this season needs to be explained. How can we have confidence in any decisions if they are doing this?

Poor list management if we had have waited until the end of the season we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Whoever is to blame should deserving of a lambasting..

It was obviously a terrible decision at the time. The club didn't know where we were at given Petracca and Oliver and May was going on 34!

Interupted pre-season, injured at the time and we signed him before seeing him playing a single game on big-money. Baffling decision.

We've really got two "6 of one" alternatives:

Trade May for Mihocek and bank the end of 2nd round compo for Spargo. Collingwood forego compo for Mihocek leaving as FA.

Trade May for Collingwood's 2nd rounder (33), take Mihocek as a FA and forego the compo for Spargo. Then Collingwood get compo for Mihocek.

His turning circle is so large now and his inability to bend down so obvious, he'd be a Manchurian candidate without any need for mind control.

MFC seems to give out "one year too many" deals like confetti.

Most posters defend the practice by saying that a slow "Player X" is better than a late second round draft pick.

Could be right but what does it say about player depth in this competition.

Personally I'd prefer to have given Seston another year than keep May or dare I say it,Fullarton (he was just starting to show something at CHB for Casey).

How can the Pies afford May if they can't afford Mihocek? This deal seems like we are paying May to play for Collingwood which is unacceptable.

They've offered Mihocek 2 years but he's not taking it. They'd offer those 2 years to May who only has one year to run at MFC.

Wishful thinking i reckon

What's "real" thinking then?

Real is us playing $500k of the wage next year with no pick return. May's last two games of the year were so poor that he is no value. It would have been better for us he got a 5 week suspension.

A bit like the Viney extension. It seemed concocted to give the Club a PR boost & take the spotlight off Goodwin's recent record.

You could say similar about Mihocek. They're about equal value IMO.

Mihocek looks cooked. We are stupid offering 3 years.

wouldn't have been such a problem if we hadn't also recommited to Tommy Mac for 26 as well. For me it should have been one or the other, and when one is already locked in i think we should have given TMac a nudge. How is Adams going to progress if hes playing 3rd banana next year at Casey with May and TMac.

Totally agree.

When did it become logical to offer good ordinary 33 year olds three year deals.

TMac was done AFTER the season. I would mandate our contracts team go overseas from November to June.

Sick of being fleeced?

Ewe should know that these bad puns are mutton but trouble and that we need players who can perform for forequarters.

  • AFLW REPORT: West Coast

Melbourne’s response to last week’s heartbreak was emphatic, as the Demons delivered a statement win over West Coast at a windswept Casey Fields. All of the pre-match hype surrounded the coach’s box matchup of Mick Stinear up against his apprentice, Daisy Pearce along with the gloomy weather forecast. In the end, it was less about tactical chess and more about Melbourne’s relentless execution. With rain looming, the DeeArmy and early birds snapped up the best undercover viewing spots.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: West Coast

Epic battle alert.  This Sunday, Casey Fields hosts a coach’s showdown pitting the wits of the master Mick Stinear (92 games, 71.7% win rate) against his protégé Daisy Pearce (16 games, 43.8%). Still early in her coaching journey, Daisy’s record doesn’t yet reflect her impact — but she’s already the best-performed coach at West Coast.Dais’ is mythic.  Like Katniss Everdeen, everyone either wants to kiss her, kill her (sporting metaphor) or be her.  Toothers Daisy Pearce is a role model, someone admired for their heart, humility and humour.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.
