I think it all comes down to motivation and what is in the players heads.

Against StKilda. Neither players or coaching staff thought they would overcome the difference. And fid nothing to change things in that last quarter. Failure on the coach failure on the senior players.

Hawthorn had the motivation and head space to beat us , once they relaxed just slightly we fid better. Conversely if we had thr motivation we might have made a decent game early , but our season is done.

Next week same scenario . None of our players wants to take revenge for Gus. Will not happen. That one act just about won the pies the flag. That scumbag went hsrd and direct took Gus out , his season and career done. But none of our players Give a rats [censored] Hole about that. Pity.

It’s the coaches job to do all that and the get the game plan correct. Just my thoughts

One of the most wonderful parts of winning the whole thing in '21 was being able to dispense with old ideas and superstitions. I realised, "Oh, we're not fundamentally, culturally incapable. There's no wide conspiracy against us. I don't need to delude myself into believing we routinely lose because of umpires. We don't need to accept that slightly above average is about as good as it gets."

In part, we have Goodwin to thank for this. He allowed us - or at least me - to raise my expectations of the Melbourne Football Club. "At least we made finals" and "we broke even for one/two/three quarters", which have always seemed like tepid acceptance of mediocrity, now seemed ludicrous. They still do.

I don't lament Goodwin's sacking because I no longer think two consecutive straight sets finals exits and two consecutive finishes in the bottom five finishes is "just what you have to accept from this club". I don't see kicking a few goals in the last quarter against a team that has absolutely pantsed us as something to hang our hat on. I don't see "transitioning" as a reason for losing by ten goals against North Melbourne. I don't see shocking inconsistency as something to be waved away.

Goodwin and his team made these higher expectations possible. I'll apply them to the new coach as well.

We would do very well to have someone like Daly as senior coach

Putting aside his tactical acumen, the work he and Fagan have done to turn Brisbane into a well oiled machine can’t be understated, and it’s a key part of their onfield success

Sam Edmund mentioned that Cam Bruce was also on our radar for an assistant coaching role

We might need to change our name to the Melbourne Lions 🤣

Reckon I've now seen about 15 ITK's with claims like this regarding a variety of different coaches and changes within the club. Not sure what to make of it but it will be exciting to find out who end up being right.

Yep. Hinkley may be scared of taking a year off because he'll go nuts not being busy with coaching, but that's no reason to sign him up. He may very well burn out next year and want out. I don't see long term stability with Hinkley.

The first thing Buckley said after Goodwin was sacked and he was asked was that he would coach very differently now compared to when he was at Collingwood. He himself said he's changed a lot. He's older, and comparing a Collingwood list back then to Melbourne list now (and in the future) is apples and oranges. Nothing I've heard from Buckley and his quite considered comments about the prospect of Melbourne going forward indicates that he isn't interested, or isn't the right person for the job. We can't just sign up a coach who wants to coach, we need to sign up a coach who wants to coach MELBOURNE. He's right up there as a top pick.

I've been big on bucks getting the gig, of the available assistants - Danny would also be a great get

Tonnes of experience, similar to Fages journey up the ranks.

If either of those 2 end up in the big seat and re-imagine assistant set up - get some guns around them - we just might bounce back up

Buckley is the re-energizer. He inherited an aging list (Didak, Jolly, Krakeour, Ball, Maxwell, Johnson, Swan), turned the list over knowing he had to introduce youth and took them back into the Grand Final in a year where they were paying $31 for the flag and people writing them off.

He is exactly the type of coach we need. We don’t need a rebuild, just a reset, and Buckley has proven he can re-shape an AFL list back into contention.

He’s also a big name, so without a proper training base, players might compromise driving to Casey just to work with him.

Also, considering how the Collingwood administration off field was a basket case from 2013 with back room infighting, I reckon Buckley did well all things considering as a first time coach.

With a new CEO and President inbound, we may finally have a stable environment for Buckley to thrive under

These are the two for me also, was big on Bucks but are warming more now for Danny Daly

Every position in the FD needs to be looked at and as for the current list of players, there are holes everywhere ... especially in the area of difference makers or matchwinners

One thing is for sure, this current list is taking us nowhere. We lack basic skills, we're not motivated, the teamwork is poor and we give up too easily

Buckley won't want plodders, he won't want senior players running the football dept. That's why Richardson should go, he has let this malaise set in as head of Football.

As much as I hate to admit it, Buckley does have respect in the game and he would be good for the following: retaining players, attracting players, keeping sponsors, encouraging membership sales, winning over the media, and maybe most importantly, securing from the AFL some R E S P E C T for the club and support with fixturing for one.

I say these things because they're true, but also to stop myself having a quiet upchuck when (if) he gets the gig.

Buckley, like whoever coaches us will want to know precisely what support he will receive from the both MFC and AFL in regard to important matters like cheating from the AFL sub bodies, tribunal, umpiring bias and media purging.
